Overland Expo East 2017 – The Griffin Rescue Tool

Among the acres of high-end overlanding equipment and custom expedition vehicles during last weekend’s Overland Expo East at the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina, this little gem of a tool stood out: The Griffin Rescue Tool. It’s specially designed for first responders with a glass breaker, seatbelt cutter, and oxygen bottle valve wrenches among its 14 functions. About 3 1/2 inches long, it’s also TSA compliant.

In this issue, that guest is James Williams. I met him at The Blade Show a few year ago. I had no idea who he was, but he was very pleasant and well respected by the others I was talking to. Turns out, James Williams is a Sensei. Adept at numerous martial arts, he has trained some of out nation’s most elite warriors. He is also a knife designer of some renown.

PocKit – Improving Your Preparedness Using One Tool for EDC

Everyday, the average American phone user needs two charges for their phones. Yet only 4% of people carry a power bank. For the other 96%, the power bank is not worth the space it takes up.

Consider something else that is good to carry: the flashlight. Flashlights can be useful for providing illumination if the lights go out, alerting oncoming traffic during nighttime, and as a striking surface for breaking car windows in an emergency. Yet, most people only keep one in the drawer at home.

The folks at Matricon Innovations have built a tool combining the two. At roughly the size of 2 smartphones stacked together, the PocKit offers a power bank as well as a flashlight. It also includes a proximity tracker to protect both your belongings and your smartphone. Place the PocKit in you bag, and carry the smartphone on your person. Both will sound an alarm if they get separated.

Best Tech Tool – Leatherman Tread Adapter

The Leatherman Tread is a 25-piece bracelet-style multitool. In addition to a stand-alone model, Leatherman also released a version called the Tread QM1, which features a Swiss timepiece. Best Tech Tool decided to expand upon this concept by releasing the BTT Adapter, which allows users to connect virtually any timepiece to the Leatherman Tread.
