Polaris Ranger To Assist In The DARPA Robotics Challenge

Friday, November 29th, 2013

ZFdSJA0tUxrWpjKonfsCJrFCas2HbkNvY7dqjDh8aeE

Minneapolis MN, November 26, 2013 – Polaris® Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII), the leading manufacturer of off-road vehicles, today announced that Polaris RANGER® XP 900 EPS vehicles will be used as part of the DARPA Robotics Challenge to be held December 20-21, 2013, at the Homestead-Miami Speedway, in Homestead, Fla.

In the early stages of a number of recent disasters, it was clear there were limitations to what mitigation steps humans could take due to dangerous conditions. The DARPA Robotics Challenge was created to spur development of advanced robots that can help humans to better respond to future disasters. The Challenge includes eight tasks that simulate the duties a robot might have to perform in such a situation. DARPA will use the RANGER XP 900 EPS in one of the eight tasks to help demonstrate robots’ ability to operate vehicles, since they are among the tools commonly on hand in disaster zones. The Polaris RANGER XP 900 is the best-selling vehicle in its class and widely available across the U.S.

“We have found off-road vehicles are some of the most useful vehicles in disaster relief due to their ease of transport and ability to traverse challenging terrain,” said Patrick Weldon, product manager for Polaris Defense. “Our specialized vehicles are designed to the end user’s specifications. For the DARPA Robotics Challenge, the RANGERs were built to accommodate the robots and provide mobility at the mock disaster site.”

The RANGER XP 900 EPS was customized for the Challenge with a remote SafeStop Electronic Throttle Kill and Brake Actuation technology. A 1000-lb./453 kg. capacity bed provides space for the robot’s power supply, and inside the cab, the bench seat and tilt steering provide ample room for robots to operate the vehicle.
The driving task requires the robots to drive the RANGER XP 900 EPS through a 250-ft/76-m course with obstacles and varied widths, and exhibit the ability to turn the vehicle in a full circle.

In the future, the versatility of the RANGER platform would allow a robot to transport tools, equipment, supplies and power around a disaster site, while traversing the difficult terrain often found in disaster situations.

Fusion of science, technology and engineering yields a revolutionary solution for hard and soft ballistic armor

Paris, 19 November 2013 – DSM Dyneema, the manufacturer of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMwPE) fiber, branded as Dyneema, and world leader in life protection materials and high performance fibers, today officially introduced Dyneema Force Multiplier Technology, built on its Radical Innovation platform, the company’s newest product development program. Dyneema Force Multiplier Technology combines breakthroughs in polymer science, next-generation fiber technology and unique uni-directional engineering to deliver up to 25 percent higher ballistic protection while reducing weight by up to 20 percent. Here at Milipol 2013, three companies – Rheinmetall Ballistic Protection GmbH, Point Blank Enterprises and TenCate Advanced Armour – are exhibiting applications that feature the first Dyneema Force Multiplier Technology products. These initial applications demonstrate the exceptional capabilities of this new technology and set the stage for future innovations in soft and hard ballistic protection. All Dyneema Force Multiplier Technology products are manufactured at the DSM Dyneema facility in Greenville, N.C.

“We have eliminated the traditional compromise between higher protection and lower weight, enabling armor manufacturers to meet tomorrow’s threats and design challenges,” said Shitij Chabba, Global Segment Director, Life Protection, DSM Dyneema. “With off-the-chart ballistic performance combined with the lightest weight and lowest profile ever demonstrated, Dyneema® Force Multiplier Technology will define future standards in life protection, including soldier modernization. This dramatically different technology is not just the first deliverable from our Radical Innovation initiative, it’s also a clear demonstration of our ongoing commitment to saving lives.”

DSM Dyneema views adoption of next-generation material technologies as critical in addressing major law enforcement and military trends that are intensifying the need to reduce the weight of protective gear. Dyneema Force Multiplier Technology delivers benefits of significantly lighter weight – enhanced comfort and flexibility for people and greater range, agility and capacity for vehicles – while providing extreme ballistic performance.

The new products based on Dyneema Force Multiplier Technology can be used to design personal protection (vests, inserts, helmets, soft armor applications and extremity protection) and vehicle armor. Additional products based on this technology are planned.

Dedicated to Innovation

DSM Dyneema has two unique paths for providing the best protection to law enforcement and the military. Radical Innovations are major breakthrough products that leap over the highest-performance solutions and create new standards in performance. Micro Innovations enhance the DSM Dyneema product portfolio with incremental improvements that help manufacturers and designers quickly respond to tenders and specifications from their customers with innovative solutions that meet every budget need.

Jetboots

After several years of extensive testing and development, Patriot3’s Jetboots have received AMU Certification by the US Department of Defense.

The Jetboots Diver Propulsion System, J-DPS is a unique, patented (US Patent 6,823,813) hands-free diver propulsion system designed specifically for the military and commercial diver.

Already adopted by NATO forces for combat swimmer applications, J-DPS is virtually silent. Unlike other propulsion devices, it is hands free and allows the diver to accomplish other tasks.

J-DPS makes finning a thing of the past. With a range in excess of two miles traditional fins are relegated to controlling attitude and direction. J-DPS allows a diver to arrive fresh at a target as well as extending the life of an open circuit rig through lower exertion.

Contact Patriot3 at info@Patriot3.com for pricing and availability.
