Private Bloggins – Hemorrhage Control – What Aunt Flow Didn’t Know

Sunday, February 1st, 2015

For those of you not in the know, Private Bloggins is the blog side of CTOMS, offering stories and recommendations regarding their products, along with plenty of other great stuff.

They recently put up a post regarding the use of sanitary pads, diapers, and tampons, and why they don’t make for the best dressings when used for hemorrhages.

Solkoa Introduces Medical Training at SHOT Show

Thursday, January 15th, 2015

We are entering new territory. Since 2001, deployed troops have, for the most part, enjoyed a great deal of forward deployed support infrastructure, including a vast medical apparatus with different levels of care available almost at your fingertips. As we draw down forces in forward areas, that medical support takes longer and longer to access as it moves farther and farther away from the operational space. For example, small units deployed to AFRICOM can literally be days away from definitive care due to the tyranny of distance across that vast continent with MEDEVAC requiring vehicle transit and airlift.

Solkoa recognizes these changes and is expanding over 10 years of specialized instruction experience into prolonged field care in austere environments. For some, this will be “back to the future”, reclaiming capabilities that existed in the SOF community before the current conflict. But it’s much more than that. Huge strides have been made in medical care over the past decade. Solkoa will show you how to go beyond TCCC and integrate these capabilities into the new reality of advanced remote field care.

CTOMS – SlimmerLine IFAK

Tuesday, December 16th, 2014

During last week’s SOMSA, Canadian-rescue firm CTOMS ran us through several of their products including their new Individual First Aid Kit, the SlimmerLine. Named after the SlimLine, the new SlimmerLine is a scaled down version of its predecessor.

IMG_0218.JPG

First off, the SlimLine is still available and will eventually adopt the new release feature developed for the SlimmerLine.

The HDPE tongue has been moved to the top of the pouch with the pouch’s beaded pull now stowed at the bottom back of the panel to protect it from accidental snag.

IMG_0217.JPG

This configuration makes it easy to completely release the pouch from the panel in one gross motor movement. There’s no fine motor movement required (like squeezing a buckle).

IMG_0220.JPG

The pouch itself opens by pulling on the two tabs at the top that are secured with a snap. That snap acts as a rapid secondary closure if in a hurry or the zipper should fail. Inside, contents are secured with elastic straps.

One of the big problems with chest seals is that they come flat. The new FastBreathe Thoracic Seal (FTS) comes folded in the pack. Not only that, Ft Detrick says it’s the stickiest chest seal on the market.

It features a hard disc shaped vent and no matter what it vents to the side. The seal is also configured so that you can clear it with a syringe.

Available for agency and unit purchase from ADS Inc.

With the integration of Hook and Loop fastener directly to medical kit components, they can be attached directly in place as well to one another. Think of the possibilities.

Brilliant!
