Friday, February 24th, 2012

Mountain States Tactical Officers Association is hosting their 2012 conference 7-10 May 2012 at Ft Harrison in historic Helena, Montana. Some of you might recognize that location as where the US-Canadian First Special Service Force was stood up.

In addition to the vendor show and usual admin meetings of the MSTOA, they are hosting some serious training opportunities.

Doug Pechtel with Countermeasures (former Army Special Operations) putting on a Tactical Team Leader Course
Rob Clare with Triangle Experience Group (former Air Force PJ and Army Special Operations) putting on a Street Fighting Course
Rod Alne with The Peak Inc (former PJ) putting on a Mountain Operations Course
Bennie Cooley with INL (winner of every shooting event there is) putting on a tactical pistol and carbine course
Shawn Lewis of ITI, a former Ranger will be teaching an Urban Sniper Course
Active Shooter Instructor Course by NTOA
Advanced Crisis Negotiators Course by NTOA
Tac Command Conference

For LE, access to this level of training is a steal, under $200 for 3-1/2 days of training.

Magnum Intrepid HPi

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

We’ve mentioned the Magnum Intrepid HPi running shoe a couple of times, but it’s been the MultiCam variant. Today, we want to show you their Black model that most of us would wear while PTing. One of the things we like about the shoe is the incorporation of Magnum’s ion-mask technology. It’s a nano-technology waterproof surface treatment that keeps the shoe itself from absorbing water. It also features a dual-density midsole with a 3D counterbalance for stability even on trails and a Seamless Upper Zone Engineering (SUZE) upper design that mixes weave patterns to mold to the contours of your foot. Available in US sizes 7-12 and 13.

TacHacker – ‘Make’ Issue 29

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

‘Make” magazine number 29 (DIY Superhuman) is out on newsstands and focuses on one of our favorite TacHacker subjects; the Body. For us, one of the coolest articles is ‘Tacit: A Haptic Wrist Rangefinder.’ The concept is a wrist mounted rangefinder that gives feedback that you can feel in your hand. The closer the object you are ranging, the greater the pressure on your wrist. Projects like this may well inspire someone to develop the next ‘must have.’ Whether you are a part or full time tinkerer or just have a passing interest in DIY, ‘Make’ magazine is a must read.

The Sports Supplement Bible

Monday, February 20th, 2012

Will Brink, the man behind Optimal SWAT has released a new book, ‘The Sports Supplement Bible.’ It covers over 60 supplement ingredients used to create many well known sports supplements. I’ve known Will for years and he has always been forthright and with over 20 years in the body building industry, he knows a thing or two on the subject.

Be sure to visit Will’s website for the book, www.sportssupplementbible.com where he talks about the book and shares several videos like the one above. So far it is available for Nook and Kindle and now hard-copy print version.

Corps Strength – Plan to Win

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

The other day I was at the gym here on base (imagine that) and I noticed an overweight older man struggling with the cable rowing machine. Now normally I don’t bother anyone at the gym, but this poor guy’s form was so bad I thought that he might seriously hurt himself. So I went over to give him some help (disguised as small talk). After he caught his breath we struck up a nice conversation. He was new to the gym, having recently had a health scare and his doctor told to him he’d better “take charge” of his health before it got worse, so here he was. loafers, black socks, Bermuda shorts and all. Hey I give him a lot of credit, he was trying. So I asked him what his plan was. “Lose weight and get in shape” was his simple answer. “Well, I replied, How much weight do you want to lose, by when and what do you mean by, get in shape? Better yet what diet and workout routine are you going to follow?” To those questions he had no real answer. His somewhat confused response is very common, and one of the biggest reasons people fail to lose the weight they want and improve their health and fitness. No plan = No success. These things don’t just happen, you have to have a solid plan to follow and with that, long and short term goals to monitor your progress. In my book Corps Strength, I devote an entire chapter to planning. Trust me on this, Its important, and will take some thought to make it work. The famous Alabama football coach Bear Bryant once said: “I beat people with better teams than me all the time. Mostly because I plan better than they do.” So take some advice from the “Bear”, and before you lace up your running shoes, take the time to outline an effective plan to reach your fitness goals. A little planning will go a long way. Be safe and good luck!

BOLO Report – Ammunition Cycling and Failure to Fire

Friday, February 17th, 2012

The BOLO Report posted a good article on repeated cycling of individual rounds of ammunition causing a failure to fire. The issue came to light after a Georgia-based officer had a failure to fire malfunction during a use of force incident. It was determined that the chambered round failed to fire due to the primer mix being knocked out of the primer during repeated cycling of the same round at night when he unloaded his weapon after work.

While it came to light during an LE incident, the situation is even more likely to occur with military ammo as troops are required to regularly unload their weapons. Oftentimes, that round goes right back into the top of the magazine it was removed from and this is accomplished over and over throughout the course of a tour.

It is important for personnel that do not regularly expend their ammo to rotate their cycled rounds.

Good News for Fans of Arc’teryx and Defoor Proformance

Friday, February 17th, 2012

We received this announcement from Kyle Defoor. We’re sure you know who Arc’teryx is, but for those of you who aren’t yet familiar with Kyle, he is a world class shooter, athlete, and trainer and he gets our highest recommendation.

Beginning March 2012, Arc’teryx LEAF division will be providing gear prizes to the top performers in my open enrollment classes. This kit will be won, not given, to the students who pass my shooting tests, sometimes cold, and the students who consistently perform well under pressure from the timer and the scoring rings.

I’m humbled that the Dead Bird asked me first to come on board for this idea. Combining the best outdoor gear on the planet with my training is a no brainer. I hope that this will up the ante even more in performance at my classes, and from it we’ll get to see and learn a lot from each other.
