The ZEV Technologies Experience – Final Assembly

Over the past several weeks, ZEV Technologies’ pistolsmiths have been taking a stock GLOCK 17 Gen 3 and converting it into a custom Soldier Systems Z17. They sent us this series of photos to illustrate what goes into the final assembly process but have continued to be coy about what the slide actually looks like. So far, we are as in the dark as our readers,

Final assembly begins….

SSD Z17 Final Assembly

1. The pistol is checked out by one of ZEV Technologies gunsmiths for final assembly, He starts by laying out all the parts and making sure he has everything to complete the install.

2. He installs the magwell insert that will accept the ZEV Slim magwell.
– The magwell functions as an attached funnel to aid in competition style speed reloads.

3. The ZEV Slim magwell is installed.
– ZEV All Aluminum Slim Magwell. Legal for IDPA, ESP competition.

4. The Fulcrum trigger is now installed into the Glock™ frame
– The trigger was adjusted for Pre-Travel and Over-Travel.

5. ZEV Extended magazine release is installed.
– The Mag Button is oversized so you can access it without shifting your grip but shaped in such a manner that it does not interfere with your shooting grip.

6. Here you see some of the components that will be installed on the ZEV slide.
-Skeletonized Firing Pin, extractor rod, extractor, Channel liner and RMR.

7. ZEV Skeletonized Firing Pin has its spring and spring cups installed.
-This firing pin has an extended tip for improved strike

8. ZEV co-witness rear sight is pushed onto the frame.
– These ZEV sights allow the shooter to still be able to aim in the unlikely event the RMR battery does not function.

9. Trijicon RMR is installed onto the slide.
– The RMR sight is the most rugged miniature red dot sight available.

10. ZEV uses blue Loctite to install the RMR mounting screws.
– This prevents the RMR screws from backing out.

11. The ZEV slide is lubricated before it is installed onto the frame.
– ZEV recommends you clean and re-lube your slide after 500 rounds.

12. The frame and slide are assembled together and sent off to ZEV’s QC department where they will not only be given a visual inspection but also test fired before being shipped out to the customer.

Next week, we’ll be in Southern California to visit the ZEV headquarters where we’ll get a chance to finally see the complete Z17.

Asymmetric Technologies – Advanced Shoulder Pocket (ASP)

Asymmetric Technologies’ Advanced Shoulder Pocket (ASP) is designed as a fully integrated, lightweight, wearable individual rifleman weapon stabilization system. The ASP system consists of two components: a buttstock pad, and a modular attachment that fits onto the shoulder strap of a chest rig or vest. Rare earth magnets in the dual components allow them to quickly mate up, seating the weapon in the same position every time. This also reportedly reduces the felt weight of the weapon.

Asymmetric Technologies currently has no set date for commercial release, although they do have ASP prototypes available for testing and evaluation.

TriStar – Cobra Marine Tactical Pump Shotgun

TriStar has just added the Cobra Marine tactical pump shotgun to their product line. The Marine features a brushed nickle finish, with a spring-loaded forearm for fast cycling, which includes a Picatinny rail. The chamber and barrel are both chrome lined, and the Marine comes standard with a 5-round magazine tube. The chamber is 3 inches, which allows for both 2 3/4″ and 3″ 12 gauge shells.

Shockwave Technologies – Blade AR Pistol Stabilizer

Shockwave Technologies has come up with their own take on the AR-15 pistol stabilizing brace, the Blade AR. The Blade AR incorporates a flexible stabilizing fin, which the user rests against the inside of their forearm when in use. This stabilizes the firearm in the horizontal plane, and the friction created between the forearm and fin stabilizes the firearm in the vertical plane. Color me skeptical. I will be surprised if BATFE approves this.

The user can also wrap a standard sling around the Blade AR to further stabilize the firearm.

Shockwave Technologies plans to release the Blade AR beginning in October of this year.

The ZEV Technologies Experience – Grip Reduction and Frame Finishing

Several week’s ago, SSD sent a new Gen 3 GLOCK 17 to SoCal-based ZEV Technologies for a tune up. They asked us a few questions about what we wanted but for the most part, we left much of it up to them. So far, we’ve seen them check the pistol in and select parts. We’ve also had a preview of the custom slide work. In week four, we get to see some frame customization.

First off, ZEV Technologies installs the the Fulcrum trigger for the GLOCK which we previewed last week. It’s a complete drop in installation that requires no special tools, so it wasn’t a stretch for the ZEV pistolsmith. But, that also means that you can do it at home.

ZEV-ULT-Trigger

The CNC Billet Aluminum trigger pad has an ergonomic shape with a wide flat face that is ideal for shooting with the pad of your trigger finger as opposed to the rounded face of the factory trigger. The trigger safety of the Fulcrum is 3x wider and more flush when depressed and also features a real spring as opposed to the thin plastic nubbin of the factory safety for greater heat and chemical resistance. The Fulcrum trigger features adjustment screws for PRE and OVER travel. Range of trigger movement can be shortened to 1/4” overall, with all factory safeties intact. Trigger reset has been shortened by half so that pistol can fire mechanically faster. The trigger bar is high polished and precision ground to help eliminate trigger creep and allow the trigger to stack up and break consistently.

Above you can see what the G17 looked like when they received it. As I’m sure you’re aware, ZEV Technologies offers custom grip jobs. Each grip is shaped to the customers specifications as a grip that is properly fitted to your hand will index with more ease and shoot more comfortably. Additionally, grip angles can be corrected to reduce limp-wristing, or improve accuracy of point shooting. A number of textures are available for competition shooting, CCW, or general range use. We chose the Silicone Carbide finish after talking with the crew at ZEV because it helps with recoil management and offers a sure grip even with sweaty hands. This isn’t some tape job but rather a proprietary coating that they do in-house.

-Reduced angle of backstrap
-Reduced girth of grip
-Double undercut trigger guard
-360 texture grip in Silicone Carbide
-Finger grooves left intact
