SoliderSystems-Parts-3

In this second installment of our ongoing series demonstrating what it’s like to send your GLOCK in to have some work done by the folks at Zev Technologies. Last week, our Gen 3 G17 was checked in and a work order created. Now, they’ve selected the parts that will be used in this upgrade and placed them in the bin with the pistol to await farther work, later this week.

SoliderSystems-Parts-2

They’ve revealed to us that they’ll be replacing the following GLOCK factory parts with their Zev Technologies models.

Factory trigger group – Fulcrum Trigger

CNC Billet Aluminum trigger pad has an ergonomic shape with a wide flat face that is ideal for shooting with the pad of your trigger finger as opposed to the rounded face of the factory trigger. The trigger safety of the Fulcrum is 3x wider and more flush when depressed. Adjustable for pre and over travel. Offered in three different kit forms for the DIYer with six different color options seen above.

Factory Magazine Release – Extended Mag Release

CNC milled from aircraft grade aluminum and then hard anodized, it’s large enough that you can hit the magazine release without changing your grip. Available in Black or Silver.

Factory Slide lock lever – Extended Titanium Slide Lock

The Extended Titanium Slide Lock Bar locks up the slide tighter than the factory part, yet is easier to remove slide for cleaning and maintenance of your Glock.

Factory Sights – Combat Fiber Optic Sight Set

20140729-202834-73714425.jpg
Consisting of front and rear pairs, the sights are machined from 304 billet stainless steel with black oxide finish. A wide .140″ race cut rear notch is matched with a narrow .105″ wide front sight for fast sight picture. Serrated to reduce reflection and glare. Front sight includes both a Red and Green fiber rod (Red rod comes pre-installed).

We are looking forward to seeing what’s next.

Armageddon Gear – Suppressor Mirage Cover

Wednesday, July 30th, 2014

atacs_fg_armageddon_gear_IMG_9033

Armageddon Gear’s Suppressor Mirage Cover is designed to significantly reduce and delay the effects of suppressor mirage on the rifleman’s ability to identify and engage their target. A highly secure design stays in place during vigorous movement, however with the use of an integrated shock-cord it can also be adjusted or removed in seconds. The design insures that the outer Cordura nylon shell does not make contact with the hot suppressor during use. Note that the Suppressor Mirage Cover is not rated for use on fully-automatic weapons.

Available in A-TACS AU, A-TACS FG, Black, Coyote Brown, Foliage Green, MultiCam, and Ranger Green. Additionally, the Suppressor Mirage Cover can be ordered in custom sizes.

X-Caliber System Update – Now Available Through Chiappa Firearms

Tuesday, July 29th, 2014

Chiappa is now offering the X-Caliber Multi-caliber bore insert system coupled with a modernized M6 break action survival rifle.

Even though we first mentioned the X-caliber system in late 2012, we still get emails inquiring about it. Originally offered by Tim Ralston’s GearUp Center, as a stand alone kit, this model from Chiappas is kind of interesting.

20140727-181408-65648148.jpg

It’s an over/under design featuring a rifled .22 LR and smooth bore 12 ga barrels. This gives you a total of 12 different calibers with the the 8 X-caliber steel adapter inserts. That’s the 2 calibers in the M6 along with 8 pistol calibers (.380 , 9 mm, .357Mag/.38SP, .40 S & W, .44 Mag, .45 ACP , .410/.45colt ) and 2 shotgun calibers (.410 and 20 ga).

The M6 was designed originally as a survival rifle for downed USAF aircrews. As I’ve stated, it’s an Over/Under design and it can be bent in half for storage or transportation. Interestingly, it’s cocked via opening the break action and uses double triggers with one for each barrel. The “lever”, or extended trigger guard is used to release the action.

Two things they’ve done to “modernize” the type is to add 3 Mil Std 1913 rails at the receiver and incorporated a molded polypropylene stock. I’m not sold on that component but everything else looks ok. It features an 18.5″ barrel with an overall length of 34.6″ with the stock in place. Stored length is 18.5″.

FBI Issues Pre-Solicitation for COTS 9MM Pistols

Monday, July 28th, 2014

While the US Army continues to make noise about adopting a new cartridge to replace the current NATO-standard 9mm caliber, Law Enforcement agencies across the country are migrating back to the round. Now, arguably the most respected LE agency in America, if not the world, the Federal Bureau of investigation is making good on their quest to transition from .40 to 9mm by taking the first step to purchase new weapons by issuing a Pre-Solicitation for Commercial Off The Shelf pistols. Although referred to as a Pre-Solicitation, it serves the same purpose as a Sources Sought Notice you’d see from DoD. This is a huge opportunity for the firearms industry. Not only with FBI but the entire LE community in America. Where the Bureau goes, so goes everyone else.

FBI Pistol Training

Specifically, they are seeking:

Various commercial “OFF THE SHELF” semi-automatic pistols chambered to fire a 9mm Luger cartridge as defined by SAAMI.

The following types of pistols, chambered to fire a 9mm Luger cartridge, may be requested for testing and evaluation purposes under a future solicitation:

Class One Pistol: barrel length between 3.75″ and 4.25″; with a minimum magazine capacity of 13 rounds.

Class Two Pistol: barrel length between 4.5″ and 5.5″; with a minimum magazine capacity of 15 rounds.

Class One Training Pistol (Red Handle): deactivated with full articulation, red receiver and slide, night sights.

Class One “Man Marking” (a.k.a., “Simunitions”) pistol: blue slide or slide with blue inserts.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation anticipates the release of a solicitation during FY2015/Q1; distributed solely through the General Services Administration (GSA) Federal Business Opportunities (FBO) Website.

The anticipated maximum, not to exceed, contract threshold is $100M for a twelve month base period and nine (9) possible additional one-year options.

Being much smaller than Defense (and much more fragmented) Justice along with the multitude of other agencies charged with law enforcement have been able to buy pretty much whatever they want over the years. For many, this has meant the .40 S&W caliber. It was developed about 25 years ago and is an outgrowth of the FBI’s interest in the 10mm cartridge but in a package that could be retrofitted to existing 9mm handgun frames. But now, with decades of data on the effects of the .40 cartridge and its toll on handguns themselves. Rumors have been swirling for sometime that they were moving back toward 9mm and this Sources Sought Notice is a step in that direction.

I’m not even going to get into the myriad reasons that the Department of Defense won’t adopt a new caliber for its sidearm but instead will point to the ill-fated Individual Carbine program which was open to new calibers. In the end, only standard 5.56mm NATO guns were down selected and even then, no weapons were capable of completing the trials which were ended early. You want a new caliber? Do the science. The Army hasn’t. Instead, they’ve set industry up for another fall in their open caliber Modular Handgun System program.

It would be prudent to keep an eye on what the Bureau is up to, and why. They rely on their handgun as primary weapon system and look to be willing to trust the lives of their agents with the 9mm caliber. Granted, they’re not shooting M882 Ball, and therein lies the rub. Regardless of handgun caliber, Full Metal Jacket ammunition doesn’t take full advantage of the latest in ammunition technology. DoD needs to consider that as well.

Tennessee Arms Company – The Ghost Gun Clear Stripped Lower Receiver

Friday, July 25th, 2014

This post was originally featured on Tactical Fanboy. It’s a transparent AR-15 lower receiver made from stabilized Nylon. We can definitely see the teaching and demonstration uses a product like this can offer.

Tennessee Arms Company is offering what they call the “Ghost Gun”, a clear stripped AR-15 lower receiver. Made from UV stabilized Nylon that is highly resistant to oils and lubricants, the Ghost Gun is a fully functional lower, although tnarmsco notes it is intended more as a teaching tool and for product showcase than for hard use. If anything else, it’ll definitely make for a great conversation starter at the range. Pair it with a transparent magazine or two for double the fun.
