Magpul’s New MagLevel PMAG 30

Magpul Industries has made another incremental improvement to the popular PMAG magazine. Information on all of the upgrades are included below on the graphic provided by Magpul but two items really stand out.

The Maglevel window has been slightly enlarged to improve visibility of the fluorescent orange Round Indicator and marking for 5, 15, and 25 have been added to the PMAG’s body to help take the guess work out of how many round are actually in the magazine.

The other improvement that will affect lots of shooters is that the side ribs have been reengineered in order to improve compatibility with non-mil-spec magwells as well as weapons such as the SCAR. This change will also improve the fit in some magazine pouches allowing for a smoother draw.

The new MagLevel PMAG will be available in Flat Dark Earth, Foliage, OD Green, and Black.

Remington ACR

So you’re scratching your head saying, “Remington ACR?” Like everyone else you thought that Bushmaster had licensed the Masada design from Magpul in January of 2008 and was dragging their feet bringing it to market. This was hardly the case and Bushmaster in conjunction with Magpul has been hard at work to perfect the rifle and improve manufacturability. Along the way, the decision was made to transition the weapon system to Remington for military orders. This decision also provides access to their capacity and experience for design, production and marketing.

The weapon is aptly named as the Adaptive Combat Rifle (ACR). First demonstrated at SHOT 2007 by Magpul Industries as the Masada, the design showcased several innovative features. It can be rapidly changed from 5.56 to 6.5 to 6.8 with the change of barrel, bolt, and magazine. Additionally, the rifle’s configuration can be altered for use as a close quarters weapon, carbine, and use in the designated marksman role.

Both Remington and Bushmaster are but two gun companies owned by Cerberus. Together with Marlin, Harrington & Richardson, New England Firearms, L.C. Smith, Parker, DPMS/Panther Arms, EOTAC, and INTC they form the Freedom Group Family of Companies.

FASTmag Gen III

To clarify a point from our earlier FASTmag coverage, the Gen III will not stack with mil-spec PALS-style attachments. The snaps are too thick to fit through the slot but other FASTmags as well as MALICE clips fit fine.

In the pictures you see the standard Gen II FASTmag (Left) compared to a belt-style Gen III (Right). There are two styles of Gen III, the belt-style as well as a standard PALS compatible version with the ears to tuck under an upper row of PALS to enhance stability. The belt-style has a removable bar that slides along the loops to accommodate various width belts.

Down East changed from the mil-spec MOLLE attaching system to a proprietary synthetic. Also, please notice that they have improved the security of the FASTmag to the point where they feel they could omit the bungie strap from the design.

Magpul Introduces MOE Trigger Guard

Magpul has added to their every expanding Manufacturer Original Equipment (MOE) line with the release of the Trigger Guard. It is non-folding, has rounded edges, and fills the â€œgapâ€ between the rear of the standard trigger guard and pistol grip. Magpul notes that due to variances in manufacturer specs some rifles may require some slight adjustments to the Trigger Guard for proper fit. The Trigger Guard is available in Black, Flat Dark Earth, Olive Drab, and Foliage.

And for those anxiously awaiting the release of The Art of The Tactical Carbine II, 4-Disc DVD Set, Magpul has released this blooper reel.

Glass Assault Tool

NVAT-Night Vision Adapter for Aimpoint Twist Mount

Blue Force Gear Introduces DAP Discreet Case

Designed to fit SBRs (10.5″) carbines fully assembled or longer disassembled weapons, Blue Force Gear’s new Discreet Case has a removable padded divider to protect the broken down components as well as a small slot pocket for storing paperwork or small parts in addition to featuring a velcro patch for ID patches.

The whole point of the case is obviously discretion and their choice of colors reflects this. The usual, high demand color schemes of UCP, Black, Ranger Green, Coyote, Khaki, and Multicam are available as well as Burgundy, Royal Blue, and Emerald Green.

To complement the new case BFG is releasing an initial run of 15 different pouches and accessories for compartmentalizing inside the Discreet Case as well as the new DAP Pack (more on this soon). These pouches will also be a boon to those who use other products with velcro accessory panels.

Ruger Enters the Black Rifle Market

Ruger has introduced the SR-556â„¢, a piston driven carbine. The rifles features a 16.125″ barrel with an overall length of 32.75″ – 36″ and weighs in at 7.92 lbs.

The operating system is a chrome-plated, two-stage piston paired with a four-position, chrome-plated gas regulator to facilitate tuning the rifle to specific ammunition or operating conditions. Additionally, the transfer rod is electroless nickel/Teflon coated. Ruger claims that the carbine is chambered in 5.56 but we are not yet able to verify this as promotional data states 5.56mm NATO/.223 Rem. The bolt, bolt carrier, and extractor are chrome plated and the SR-556 offers a cold hammer-forged, chrome-lined Mil-Spec 41V45 barrel. The barrel has a 1:9 twist and is capped with the AC-556 flash suppressor from the Mini-14. Additionally, the once-piece bolt carrier has an an integral transfer key.

Ruger has also incorporated Troy Industries Folding BattleSightsâ„¢ which co-witness with Mil-Spec optics and can be raised at the push of a button.

The furniture consists of a Troy Industries Quad Rail with three Troy Industries Rail Covers, a six-position telescoping M4-style buttstock, and HogueÂ® MonogripÂ® Pistol Grip. Troy developed the rail specifically for the SR-556. The rifle also comes with a lock, three 30-Round MAGPUL PMAG Magazines, and packed in a custom soft case.

Although the new rifle does include several extras it is a bit pricey, particularly for a new entry into the market.
