USSOCOM Completes Safety Certification and Purchase of SIG SAUER MG 338 Machine Guns, Ammunition, and Next Generation Suppressors

Wednesday, January 15th, 2020

Big news from SIG. For the first time in over a century, the US military has safety certified bot a new weapon as well as ammunition at the same time.

They also certified a suppressor at the same time, a first.

These weapons are undergoing a combat evaluation by MARSOC on behalf of USSOCOM and the US Marine Corps.

I recently had an opportunity to fire the SIG SAUER MG 338 machine gun. It is extremely controllable and weighs less than an M240.

Here is their press release.

NEWINGTON, N.H., (January 13, 2020) – SIG SAUER, Inc. is pleased to announce the United States Special Operation Command (USSOCOM), working closely with SIG SAUER, has completed a safety certification of the new SIG SAUER MG 338 Machine Gun, SIG SAUER 338 Norma Mag Ammunition, and Next Generation Suppressors.  Following this historic official safety certification, SIG SAUER has completed deliveries of multiple systems, comprised of the MG 338 Machine Guns, 338 Norma Mag Ammunition, and Next Generation Suppressors – all researched, designed, engineered, and manufactured by SIG SAUER in the U.S.A.

“The safety certification of the complete SIG SAUER MG 338 system, and delivery of the system to USSOCOM is historically very significant.  For the first time in decades the U.S. Military certified a new machine gun, ammunition, and suppressor at the same time, bringing new innovation, portability, and increased lethality to our ground forces, with all components coming from one company,” began Ron Cohen, President and CEO, SIG SAUER, Inc.  “This certification was achieved following the outstanding performance of the complete MG 338 system through the rigors of the extensive function, durability, and safety tests set forth by USSOCOM.”

The SIG MG 338 bridges the gap between the current machine guns currently in use with the U.S. Military.  In comparison to the current M240 (7.62x51cal) machine gun, which has been in service with the U.S. Military for 60 years, the SIG MG 338, is noticeably lighter, weighing only 20 pounds, and provides significantly more range and lethality.  In comparison to the M2 (.50cal), which has been in service with the U.S. Military for 110 years, the MG 338 is approximately one-quarter the weight, and in a historic first, offers a man-portable solution with similar effective-range.  Making this system even more desirable are the new SIG SAUER Next Generation Suppressors which drastically reduces the impact of harmful toxic fumes and signature, making the operator less vulnerable.

The SIG SAUER MG 338 machine gun is a belt-fed, lightweight medium machine gun weighing under 20lbs., chambered in 338 Norma Mag.  The MG 338 features a short-stroke gas piston system and a proprietary recoil mitigation system, with a free-floating, quick-change barrel, ambidextrous controls, switchable feed tray, charging handle that can be alternated to either side depending on operator preference, and as a modern, multi-caliber, modular system the new SIG MG 338 is easily convertible to 7.62x51cal.

“We are incredibly proud of this historical accomplishment and honored to have received this safety certification by USSOCOM for the performance of the complete MG 338 system,” concluded Cohen.

Machine Gun Announcement from Geissele Automatics and Barrett

Tuesday, January 14th, 2020

North Wales, Pennsylvania – Geissele Automatics is proud to announce their acquisition of the 240LW and 240LWS machine gun technical data package and intellectual property from Barrett Firearms Manufacturing, Inc. Barrett also announced it has entered into a technical support agreement for the 240LW and 240LWS with Geissele.

The 240LW and 240LWS are lighter, more robust versions of the medium machine guns fielded by U.S. and allied forces around the world. The design uses a patented two-piece construction process that simplifies and solidifies the forged receiver without resorting to exotic materials or having to rely on rivets that can loosen.

Bill Geissele, President and Founder of Geissele Automatics, said “The Barrett team has taken the good performing, but dated, M240 weapon system and made it into a machine gun for the 21st century. The 240LW/LWS is improved in every performance aspect: it’s lighter, more reliable, easier to load, easier to maintain, more ergonomic and more controllable. With the addition of Geissele’s forged long life barrels and NanoWeapon (Picatinny DSL) coating we look forward to providing the U.S. warfighter and our allies with 240LW/LWS machine guns.”

Since 2007 Geissele has been serving the U.S. Special Operations community and SOF units world-wide with high performance weapon systems and components. Geissele is also proud to provide these same products to our law enforcement officers and civilian shooters.

Sam Shallenberger, President of Barrett, said “Barrett is the leader in large caliber, long range precision rifles for the most demanding shooters on Earth. Barrett .50 caliber systems have been adopted by the U.S. Military as the US Rifle M107, and the Barrett MRAD has recently been adopted by USSOCOM as the Mark 22. After working with Geissele on other projects for several years, we are confident they are the right organization to maximize the potential of this latest Barrett firearms design.”

Barrett is a family-owned and operated company and the world leader in large-caliber, long-distance, precision rifle design and manufacturing. Barrett products are used by civilians, sport shooters, law enforcement agencies, the United States military and more than 73 State Department approved countries around the world.

Maxim Defense Ammunition – SBA (Short Barrel Ammunition)

Maxim Defense is committed to developing the next-generation tools, equipment, and systems that exceed in the most extreme environments. Today’s short barrel weapons excel in close-quarter encounters but sometimes lack the velocities and terminal ballistics that longer barrels have. To address these concerns, Maxim Defense partnered with Fort Scott Munitions to optimize ammunition loads specifically for short barrel weapons.

By making these adjustments, as well as including their TUI® (Tumble Upon Impact™) technology, the Maxim Defense Ammunition ballistic wound cavities exceed the standards of both Expanding and Fragmenting projectiles. The TUI® design of the projectiles tumble all the way down to 500 fps. Maxim Defense SBA (Short Barrel Ammunition) is the ultimate choice for when close quarter battle and personal defense are non-negotiable. MSRP $27.94 – $36.95

Angstadt Arms MDP-9

Tuesday, January 7th, 2020

When the MDP-9 was first mentioned, there were a lot of negative comments about how it was the same gun Angstadt Arms was already producing. We can now tell you that the big changes are under the hood.

Featuring a true roller-delayed blowback design, Angstadt Arms’ MDP-9 offers low recoil and compatibility with suppressors.

It’s ultra-compact and lightweight, just 14” long and 3.6lbs (empty). It’s also designed to use Glock magazines and features last round bolt hold open and an extended mag release.

The gun incorporates a non-reciprocating forward charging handle that can be swapped from left to right side. The barrel is from an MP5 K (5.85″) and has a 3-lug. All other parts in the upper assembly are proprietary to the MDP-9 (including trunnion, bolt, rails, etc.).

It’s backwards compatible. The monolithic upper assembly can be dropped on an AR-9 or AR-15 lower receiver. For customers that want to upgrade their existing guns, they can purchase the upper receiver assembly. It will include the rear picatinny rail adapter to close the gap and allow for brace mounting options.

Goodbye buffer tube! The MDP-9 has a super slim 1913 end rail that can accept a wide variety of pistol brace and rifle stock options. The supplied images show the MDP-9 pistol with no brace as well as with a SB Tactical side-folding 1913 brace. You can also use the telescoping MPX PSB. The MDP-9 upper assembly has receiver cuts to accommodate the rails.

User serviceable. The bolt, rollers, locking piece and rails are made from hardened steel and can be swapped out by the end user. The upper receiver assembly is 7075-T6.

Pricing:

• MDP-9 9mm Pistol: $2,599 MSRP.
• MDP-9 9mm Pistol with SB-Tactical side folding brace: $2,799 MSRP.
• MDP-9 monolithic upper assembly and end rail adapter: $1,799 MSRP.

Dead Air + Noveske “Heat Model” Colt 733 Enhanced Clone package

Friday, January 3rd, 2020

Heat1

Michael Mann productions tend to have above average firearms choreography, and HEAT is considered among his best. Dead Air Armament and Noveske Rifleworks seem to agree, because they’ve partnered up to produce an extremely limited “Heat Model” Colt 733 Enhanced Clone package inspired by the big bank shootout from that film, and the Colt 733 wielded by Val Klimer’s character, Chris Shiherlis.

Combo Rollmark

The rifle stars with a Noveske/Dead Air Gen 1 lower receiver with combo logo rollmark, and a Noveske A1E1 upper with shell deflector and forged carry handle, complete with an Elite Smoke Cerakote finish. The furniture consists of a standard carbine M4 handguard, GI charging handle, A2 pistol grip, and CAR15 aluminum stock with Graphite Black Cerakote finish.

Heat5

The 11.5″ light commando barrel is capped with a Forward Controls Design 6315KM 1/2×28 flash hider, which features direct attachment compatibility with the Sandman-K suppressor that comes with the package. The suppressor itself shares the same Dead Air/Noveske combo logo and serial number as the host 733 clone.

Limited to just 50 units, the “Heat Model” Colt 733 package was available initially to Dead Air ‘ASYLUM’ program members, with the remaining going out to Dead Air’s dealer network. So if you want one, pick it up fast!
