Apparently Somebody Didn’t Get The Memo – UPDATE

20120825-204725.jpg

In early 2012 a group of USMC Scout Snipers brought dishonor on themselves and the country when photos of them standing in front a flag emblazoned with Nazi symbols were made public. Naturally, once they were called out on the practice by responsible parties, the behavior ceased. As a community, Marine Corps Scout Snipers moved on. However, despite the fact that this was all over the news and Internet, a Facebook page that makes the following claim has popped up, “A page dedicated to keeping the SS symbol alive and well in the Marine Scout Sniper community”. The argument holds that SS stands for Scout Sniper and it’s just a coincidence (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) that the stylized version of the SS looks exactly like a Nazi symbol.

The Sigrune SS symbol used in the Facebook header photo is unique to Nazism and is nothing to be proud of. In fact, it is so heinous, it is illegal in modern Germany. The side by side lightning bolt symbol was created specifically for Nazi Germany’s Schutzstaffel, a paramilitary organization that swore allegiance to Adolph Hitler. One of the SS’s elements was responsible for instituting the “Final Solution” or genocide of not only European Jews but also those of many other ethnic groups including Roma (Gypsies) and Slavs. All-in-all it is estimated that the SS was responsible for the killing, torture, and enslavement of approximately twelve million people.

Hardly something to want to emulate or hold dear. The owners of the MarineCorpsSS page should be ashamed and anyone who supports them should be as well. The US suffered almost 200,000 KIA in wiping the Nazi menace from the earth. Those who emulate our enemies dishonor our dead and the sacrifice of our greatest generation. Worse yet, the behavior is being perpetuated by those associated with the military. How can anyone justify the adoption of a symbol associated with such abhorrent behavior?

The Facebok page is www.facebook.com/MarineCorpsSS

UPDATE – Since I worked on the article last night, the owners of the Facebook page have updated their small icon so that those not directly looking at the page will not see the use of the SS runes.

I guess this introduces an interesting issue I hadn’t even considered. I know that the SS runes were used by Scout Snipers, but what about the average person that doesn’t know this and just sees the runes associated in some way with the EGA? This takes on a whole new aspect now doesn’t it? The context is lost and the Marine Corps is directly associated with Nazism. Even worse…

What It Costs To Be Iron Man

Sunday, July 29th, 2012

Time to give the Marvel universe a little love with a graphic depicting how much it would cost to be Iron Man. After all, just last week we showed you how much it would cost to be the Bat.

Ice-T Talks Second Amendment

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

I personally am finding it pretty damned ironic that folks who vilified Ice-T for his song, “Cop Killer” now think he’s an OK dude because he defends the Second Amendment for what it is.

Ice-T: Not really. You can strap explosives on your body, they do that all the time.

Ice-T: Well, I’ll give up my gun when everybody does. Doesn’t that make sense? If there were guns here, would you want to be the only person without one?

Krishnan Guru-Murthy, anchor, Channel 4 News: So do you carry guns routinely at home?

Ice-T: Yeah, it’s legal in the United States. It’s part of our Constitution. You know, the right to bear arms is because that’s the last form of defense against tyranny. Not to hunt. It’s to protect yourself from the police.

Anchor: And do you see any link between that and these sorts of incidents (Aurora)?

Ice-T: No. Nah. Not really really. You know what I’m saying, if somebody wants to kill people, you know, they don’t need a gun to do it.

Anchor: It makes it easier though, doesn’t it?

I’m Not Sure What’s Going on in Chesterfield But Thus Far, I’m Not Impressed

Monday, July 23rd, 2012

Early Friday morning a monster gunned down innocent moviegoers in Aurora, Colorado. You might ask what that has to do with Chesterfield, Missouri and normally so would we. But, Chesterfield, Missouri based TacticalGear.com thrust themselves into the middle of this act.

You see, the perpetrator of this heinous crime is said to have purchased a Blackhawk! vest, 2 pouches and a knife from them in early July, according to their records. In fact, that info is ALL over the news. It seems a bit off to make such a big deal over that. A vest, knife, and two pouches? This isn’t like it’s the weapon.

Already, it was starting to look like someone going beyond being a cooperative citizen to looking for some publicity. But then, it got worse.

We’ve been very supportive of TacticalGear.com in the past but the comments made by COO Andrew Hoefener during a recent interview by KMOV were pretty unimpressive. He started out the interview just fine, explaining that TacticalGear.com is proud to support Law Enforcement, but then it got weird. He said, “If any additional scrutiny needs to be paid, it’s probably to ammunition sourcing online and firearms and how those are purchased.” What the hell is he talking about? And, does he even have any idea what he means when he says that? What is this guy thinking?

Let’s face it, DOD budgets aren’t exactly getting larger these days, so, in the interest of diversifying their customer base and product portfolios, Serket has teamed with TenCate (scrap fabric only – no real Defender M was harmed in the manufacture of this sun dress) and Travis McDowell (and his Grandma) to develop a functioning prototype of the world’s first flame resistant, no-melt, anti-static, anti-microbial, MultiCam sundress (concept only – hold your money orders, operators are NOT standing by).

Test/evaluation is currently underway in Somalia, Syria, The Congo (in Kryptek Mandrake) and Asheville, N.C.

Camouflage Gets Its ‘Keep Government Out of My Medicare’ Moment

Sunday, July 1st, 2012

I literally live for irony. I can write and write and write all about the camo wars and the various services’ quest for a better camouflage but I just can’t force people to READ. Regardless of the topic, folks love news by headline and they form opinions around phrases designed to titillate rather than inform.

Most recently, I had a reader comment that the Army should look to the private sector to solve their camouflage woes. Classic. They have. The US Army Camouflage Improvement Effort is investigating families of camouflage patterns developed by industry. And, PEO Soldier and their scientific arm, The Natick Soldier Systems Center are embarking on the most extensive test and evaluation undertaking ever conducted. When this is over, the Army will truly be able to say that they have thoroughly considered the latest that industry has to offer.
