We’ve also been told that they are in at Edgar Brothers for European orders. Both companies report heavy pre-orders so if you want to get yours, you’d better act fast.

Sneak Peek – Raine R2

November 13th, 2012

20121112-170024.jpg

Manifesting the Raine mindset of LIGHTER FASTER STRONGER, the new R2 combines functionality and scalability into a manageable, 2800 cubic inch pack system. While wheels have not been re-invented in Raine’s first ever ruck sack platform, good sound functional features and modularity were built into this pack to carry your load comfortably and efficiently.

“Running this pack in the field recently allowed me to test some of purpose built features we were driving at in the design phase. At the end of the day, what is it that I need my pack to do for me? The simple answer is to carry a load, carry it comfortably, and allow me to do it in a manner in which I never have to fight the load. This pack carried a pretty hearty load and did it very comfortably thanks to the strategic placement of the shoulder and waist suspension.

This pack will only take so much kit before you have to go to the exterior. The beaver tail feature allows for quite a bit of expandability on the exterior, and was purpose built to accept a helmet up to the size of an ACH…or rain jacket and pants…or MRE’s… or whatever a human can fit. Another point of expandability is that the user can dock his Raine Day Pack onto the R2 with two of our simple ITW G-Hook straps.”
-Will Romes, Raine Inc. Product Development Manager

Look for Raine to unveil this pack, along with a number of other duffels, purpose built specialty packs, load out bags, new belts, navigation platforms, and new armor systems at SHOT Show coming up in January, 2013.

Activision Selects Ghostex Camouflage for “Call of Duty: Black Ops 2”

November 13th, 2012

Activision Publishing, Inc, has selected Ghostex camouflage patterns for use in “Call of Duty: Black Ops II.” As you will recall Ghostex is a Hyperstealth/ADS Inc joint venture that has been providing specialized camouflage development and print-on-demand solutions for specialized customers since 2010. A few of the patterns have been released to the public including the Delta-6 pattern seen below which will be included in the game.

20121113-115917.jpg The web has been abuzz with chatter about specialty camouflage patterns that can be unlocked during game play and Ghostex is it. Notice I said patterns with an “S” meaning I’d expect to see additional Ghostex variants show up in the game. www.ghostex.com

MATBOCK – The Amphibian

November 13th, 2012

MATBOCK is quickly earning a reputation for developing innovative solutions for very specialized problems. These are the issues that others won’t take on, but necessity is the mother of invention and, based on their own needs while serving, they’ve rolled up their sleeves and developed some answers.

For example, in certain situations operators are required to carry a supplemental air source such as an Aqua Lung Survival Egress Air (SEA) bottle or a Helicopter Emergency Egress Device (HEED) bottle. Usually this air source is tucked away in a backpack or pouch without easy access, but it’s still required gear. Not happy with just carrying a piece of life saving gear in a pouch that is most likely going to be a struggle to reach in a high stress, high stakes situation, MATBOCK developed The Amphibian.

The Amphibian combines two life saving elements, air and water, into one system. At first glance the Amphibian might look like another water bladder pouch, but they integrated a special sleeve specifically designed to hold an Aqua Lung SEA bottle. Additionally, the hoses of the Platypus water bladder and SEA bottle are bundled together in a Velcro sleeve, which is routed over the shoulder. Both the water and air mouthpiece are mounted to the front of a plate carrier for easy access that won’t get in the way.

Specifically build for Navy helo crews, NSW water operations, Search and Rescue crews or any situation when supplemental air sources are required.

The Amphibian consists of three components:
Pouch:
– 500 Cordura
– Side zipper pocket
– PALS Compatible

Platypus Bladder:
– 1.8L Hoser
– Drink Tube Kit with Bite Valve Cover
– Black Tube Insulator

Aqualung SEA Bottle:
– Model LV-2
– 2.0 liter bottle
– 27” hose
– Mouthpiece cover

Don’t forget, in honor of their 1st anniversary, MATBOCK is offering an exclusive 10% discount for all SSD readers. Please just enter “SSD10″ during checkout to receive your 10% discount. This coupon code will be good for the entire month of November.

Corrugated DLS Training Furniture

November 12th, 2012

The new Corrugated DLS Training Furniture is cool on several levels. For one thing, it’s a low cost solution for adding realism to shoot houses. Second, it can be “wrapped” in a variety of finishes to replicate virtually any environment. Finally, that same DLS Wrap has special properties embedded in the DLS Polymer Film that prevents the corrugated material from catching fire from a “ flash bang “ or a “ smoke grenade “ when clearing a room. It’s not only safer than other solutions, but the training furniture will last longer for the Soldier to train on.

Wild Things Gear Debuts Mass Customization for Technical Outerwear

November 12th, 2012

Wild Things Gear has just launched a new service that let’s you customize apparel (American Made at that) and have it delivered in two weeks.

20121112-182137.jpg

Using a best-in-class visual configurator, you can choose options such as type of performance fabrics, insulation type and weight, color, detail trim, hood or no hood and pocket placement. Color options include MultiCam. Already, the service is available through Wild Things’ website as well as through an exclusive sales and marketing agreement, on Moosejaw’s website and in select Moosejaw stores.

“Once we heard what they were up to, we jumped at the chance to partner with Wild Things,” said Eoin Comerford, Moosejaw’s president and CEO. “Active outdoor pursuits are all about personal expression, but until now, outdoor enthusiasts had to choose from mass-produced outerwear. With Wild Things, they can have their jackets built exactly how they want, with only the features that they need and in colors that match their favorite cravats.”

Initially, customized styles for men and women will be available in just three products: Wind Pro Jacket; Mountain Guide Jacket (Soft Shell); and the Insulight Jacket. But Wild Things has informed us that a second phase will launch in 2013 with additional men’s and women’s styles such as the Alpinist Jacket and Pants as well as packs. Personalized packs, that’s pretty cool.

“This is the first scalable mass customization initiative available in the outdoor category,” said Ed Schmults, CEO of Wild Things Gear. “Our outerwear is distinctive in that it provides personalization for individual customers at a mass production price. The outdoor consumer gets exactly what he or she wants quickly. Our customers can easily share their designs via Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest to validate or critique their decisions with friends. This viral marketing option will spread awareness of this new initiative. We couldn’t think of a better partner than Moosejaw for this first phase, as they are progressive thinkers with a solid customer base that appreciates this option. In the end, this is aboutgiving customers unmatched choice and value without having to hold finished goods inventory.”

In all, you’ll get to choose 10 specific attributes including outer shell fabric, side panels, cuffs, chest pocket location, zipper pocket location, logo, insulation (PrimaLoft One, PrimaLoft Eco or PrimaLoft Sport) and color. Additionally, as the options are selected, the web-based customization tool is instantly updated using 3-D with zoom, rotation, color and feature changes, resulting in a real life view of the end product. You’ll know what your garment will look like on the fly and any tweaks are updated instantly.

20121112-182317.jpg

Once you have created a customized piece you can share it with others text messages, Facebook, Pinterest or Twitter directly from the site using the “Share Your Design” feature. At the present time, global brands and manufacturers use this on-demand product configurators from Fluid, Inc. This feature also means that you can start your own version from your buddy’s saved creations or from a library of stored designs on the site, or naturally, from a blank slate.

Manufacturing is presently done in the USA in two facilities. “Competing for bulk production against off-shore manufacturing is a difficult proposition for U.S. apparel manufacturers,” continued Schmults. “While wage inflation in China is making U.S. apparel manufacturers more competitive, the average U.S. factory needs to pursue a new business model focused on higher value-added products. We are using manufacturing processes pioneered by Toyota to enable us to scale with mass customization. Not only does this afford us the opportunity for forging closer relationships with our consumers, but also, our program is also environmentally smart and economic. It is a win-win for everyone.”

What’s more, Wild Things Gear is offering a discount exclusively for SSD readers. Enter code SSD-WTG. You’ll get 25% off ALL products on the site, not just customization from now until 11/25/12. MultiCam is available now with Kryptek patterns coming soon.
