Austrian brand Carinthia is well known for their excellent cold weather clothing, sleep systems and shelters. This year at IWA they exhibited a new insulating garment based on their -30 Deg C capable, ECIG, which features a shell made from WL Gore & Associates’ Pyrad FR process. The process is applied to fabric such as Gore-Tex windstopper before it is sewn into a garment. It gives a distinctive look, seen below, to any fabric which has received the process. But what is remarkable, is the performance. Pyrad is a self-extinguishing fabric technology that adds heat and flame protection properties to non-FR textiles. What’s more, the inherent qualities of the base fabric are retained. Fabrics still insulate, still wick and are still durable.

Carinthia isn’t the only company incorporating Pyrad into their line. I’m seeing it more and more in the States and IWA opened my eyes to new uses in Europe.

Sunday, May 15th, 2016

The Carinthia Survival Gore-Tex rainsuit is pretty popular for it’s small size and great breathability. Thanks to an Australian customer, the factory has agreed to doing a run of them in MultiCam. This is really a limited thing and they are only doing a few extra.

Go to www.coolkit.com.au/multicam-survival-rainsuit and put in your order. Delivery is expected mid-July.

Thier site isn’t set up for overseas sales. Email them and they’ll advise you of postage and the price less tax.

Carinthia Caters to SOF Clothing Requirements

Tuesday, October 6th, 2015

Another great European brand we had a chance to chat with at DSEI was Austria-based Carinthia.  They manufacture a range of sleeping bags, shelters and environmental clothing systems.  Several of their items are used by European SOF units and they often create special make up variants of their products such as those shown below.

This is a Gore-Tex shell that has been adopted by a European SOF organization. It’s a modified version of the Carinthia Tactical Rain Garment which includes Trousers. It utilizes a Topaz ePTFE membrane with a polyamide shell.

That same unit also issues this jacket was an insulated garment. It’s a variant of Carinthia’s Extreme Cold Insulation Jacket and includes Trousers. It uses G-loft ISO+ polyester insulation with a polyamide shell featuring a GORE Windstopper membrane.

Carinthia Sleeping Systems and Cold Weather Clothing

Saturday, November 5th, 2011

I’ve known about Austria’s Carinthia bags for years but this commercial definitely jogged my memory. Those big packs remind me of my time in LRS in the late 80s.

Carinthia’s Observer Plus bivy has seen extensive use by European Snipers and Recce troops.
