782 Gear’s New Look

Friday, November 12th, 2010

782 Gear just launched their new web presence and, in addition to the new streamlined look, they have also opened a web store. One of the features that we really like about the new storefront is that there is also a mobile version for those on their smartphone. We have received numerous inquiries from our readers asking where to purchase 782 Gear’s clothing which includes both FR and non-FR options. So guys, no excuses now.

782 Gear clothing is comfortable and functional. When you see many of their products the first thing that comes to mind will be, “I’ve seen that before.” But we can assure, not like this you haven’t. 782’s motto is ‘Tradition Meets Innovation’ and they have taken those military clothing and equipment designs you are familiar with and updated both construction and materials. Performance and comfort are both enhanced. 782 Gear offers Berry Compliant products with additional options for those who do not require American made.

Marines Looking for a Few Good ‘MOLLE-Type’ Packs

Friday, November 12th, 2010

According to a Sources Sought Notice released in November, it appears as if the Marine Corps has decided on a way ahead for a replacement for the Improved Load Bearing Equipment (ILBE) pack.

From the Notice:

The Program Manager Individual Combat and Equipment (PM ICE), Marine Corps Systems Command (MARCORSYSCOM), is seeking industry input that identifies potential sources and best practice information regarding the manufacturing of a government-designed USMC Pack System. The USMC Pack System is similar to the US Army’s MOLLE Large and Assault Packs. The resultant System must be Berry Amendment compliant and as well as be produced at a rate which will result in a total of 108,000 Systems being delivered within 12 months of contract awards. It is anticipated that production would be satisfied through multiple contract awards.

Ironically, Marine Corps dissatisfaction with MOLLE spawned the ILBE program in the first place. Based on commercial backpacking technology, ILBE was developed by Arc’teryx and manufactured under license by Propper. The system includes a large internal frame pack, assault pack, hydration system, and waterproof liners. Issues with the design began to arise after the Marines began to use body armor with integral rear plates as standard issue. The internal frame ILBE was not designed to accommodate the added bulk of the plates and the Marines chose not to undertake a Product Improvement Program. The Marines Corps has looked at dozens of designs over the last two years including a proposal called the ‘WELBE‘ that would have modified their existing packs to accept the Mystery Ranch NICE frame.

Over the summer they announced they were going to conduct a limited test of “five Government owned pack designs”. This is a natural step in the development of a new material solution to avoid starting a new program when there is already a product that satisfies the requirement. If this Sources Sought Notice is any indication, they found their solution with MOLLE, or at least something similar.

Interested in some REALLY cool aviation art? We recently found out about www.SupportTheFrontLines.com where artist Travis Getz has developed a series of store fronts featuring original artwork to support different causes. For example, one of the prints showcased at www.squadronstore.com commemorates the ‘Sea Elks’ (HMM-166) transition from the CH-46 to the MV-22. The majority of the profits from the site are donated to the squadron’s Officers’ Wives’ Club.

Travis does the same thing for a variety of causes. For more information, or to order visit www.SupportTheFrontLines.com.

Been Looking for an A-TACS Uniform?

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

Well look no further. Propper and A-TACS developer Digital Concealment Systems have just announced an agreement resulting in Propper offering an ACU cut uniform in the popular A-TACS pattern. Manufactured from 65/35 Poly Cotton, the ACUs are sewn to the same exacting specs as the issue gear. This means they will hold up to tough use and there are no unknowns when it comes to sizing. Look for the new uniforms in the Spring with Boonie Hats and Combat Shirts to follow.

The Propper ACUs join load carrying equipment from Tactical Assault Gear and slings and other specialized kit from Blue Force Gear.

Veterans Day

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

Originally intended to commemorate the end of the “Great War” and those who sacrificed life, limb, and youth, this Veterans Day is also celebrated by our close allies in the Commonwealth of Nations as Remembrance Day. America and her allies learned that war didn’t end in 1918 and we have all stuck together since. We have kept our freedom but it came at a price.

We here at SSD would like to thank our Veterans, their families and those that support them in Government and industry. Our very way of life we owe to service and sacrifice of these men and women. If you know a Veteran, or just happen to meet one on the street today, thank them for their service and also remember those who have sacrificed.

Thank You All from SSD

Instant-Access Frag Grenade Pouch

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

New brand High Ground is offered by Ehmke Manufacturing Company who has been in the contract sewing business for generations. In fact, if you have flown on US military aircraft you are more familiar with Ehmke than you think. The thermal acoustical insulation blankets on the plane’s interior are produced by Ehmke as well as the ubiquitous panel mounted first aid kit so many paratroopers have swiped as they shuffled toward the door.

While they introduced a slew of innovative products this week at the Soldier Technology Expo presented by IDGA at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the Instant-Access Frag Grenade Pouch immediately caught our eye. The product is a combination of design and materials that make it the most functional grenade pouch we have seen. They have paired a large Grab-Tab and a Single-Flow Directional Pull Release which utilizes a lift-the-dot snap. This means that the only way to open the pouch is to pull straight up. Additionally, the pull tab is covered in non-slip material to make sure you don’t lose your purchase even in wet conditions. The cover flap also features a snap so it can be closed in the more traditional fashion. While designed for use with frag grenades, it also holds MBITR & PRC-152 batteries. We must say that the pouch’s mechanism reminds us a bit of the grenade elevator from TAG but that pouch carries two frags and the strap is used to elevate the second grenade rather than eject it from the pouch. Careful, when you pull that tab, the grenade pops right into your hand. Finally, the PALS compatible attachment utilizes the tuck design pioneered by Paraclete well over 15 years ago. This is the most innovative grenade pouch we have seen.

Black Ops Midnight Launch

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

Once again, I attended a launch party at my local Gamestop, this time for Black Ops. I arrived early at around 9:30, and still ended up as number 45 in line, since the staff was taking pre-orders as early as 7 PM. Despite this, the evening was enjoyable enough. A makeshift tournament of Modern Warfare 2 was among the available entertainment with a five dollar gift card as the top and only prize. I did sign up, but was quickly distracted when the staff put up a demonstration copy of Black Ops on the PS3, so I forfeited the tournament to try the new CoD instead. I played a few rounds of mulitplayer with some of the other attendees and was very impressed with the game, especially when compared to Modern Warfare 2. There were also refreshments in the form of pizza and a local band named Arete played at the event. The eventual wait in line passed quickly, and I rushed home with my new prestige edition, eager to bust out my new RC-XD car.
