Armadillo

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

Watch the full episode. See more POV.

The Danish documentary, “Armadillo” is now available for viewing on the PBS website. If you haven’t heard of it, here is a brief description.

In 2009, Janus Metz and cameraman Lars Skree accompanied a platoon of Danish soldiers to Armadillo, a combat operations base in southern Afghanistan. For six months, often while under fire, they captured the lives of the young soldiers fighting the Taliban in a hostile and confusing environment, where official rhetoric about helping civilians too often met the unforgiving reality of being a foreign occupier. Winner of the Critics’ Week Grand Prix at Cannes, Armadillo is one of the most dramatic and candid accounts of combat to come out of Afghanistan.

In addition to the full length documentary, PBS offers some additional content including an interview with the filmmaker. You’d better hurry, it’s only available until September 29th.

Where’s The Woodland MARPAT FROG?

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

We’ve been asking that question for awhile now, but we are very happy to report that the USMC’s Flame Resistant Organizational Gear (FROG) is now available in Woodland MARPAT. In fact, it’s already in service. According to industry sources, about one-quarter of the current production of FROG is being manufactured in the Woodland variant of MARPAT.

In addition to contract production, Propper Industries has also added the woodland pattern to their website. (a little hint, they will have NWU Types I, II and III soon as well)

3RAR Loses Para Role

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

Yesterday was a sad day for paratroopers everywhere. Our brothers in Australia’s 3RAR officially lost their parachute role and will be a Mechanized Infantry unit from here on out. To add insult to injury they are scheduled to move in December from Sydney to Townsville. When you see an Australian Soldier wearing the distinctive wings of 3RAR know that he was a part of something special. Buy that man a beer.

Australians Issue Mystery Ranch 3-Day Pack

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

As part of the new Soldier Combat Ensemble, the Australian Army is issuing the Mystery Ranch 3-Day Assault Pack as their Medium pack. The pack’s bolsters make it compatible with the Tiered Body Armor System. The pack was selected for issue after a competitive trial conducted by 8/9 RAR and the 2nd Cdo Regt’s Development Cell. Although Australian Army officials say there is need for at least 6 separate packs, they feel they may be able to get along with just one frame system.
