TQ Hate – What Gives?

I gotta say, based on the feedback I’ve seen online regarding the counterfeit tourniquets, it looks like there is a lot of hate for tourniquets out there. What’s the deal guys?

Counterfeit CAT Tourniquets Have Infiltrated Ontario Provincial Police

Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

Back in 2010 we first warned you about the Element CAT Tourniquets which were manufactured offshore as props for milsim players.

Now, our friends at CTOMS, a Canadian firm that specializes in tactical medicine training and product development has alerted us to a deployment of these fake tourniquets with the Ontario Provincial Police. I am flabbergasted that it has gone as far as it has and you have got to take a few minutes to go read this crazy story.

We’ve known that the Element tourniquets were dangerous if used for real applications but the demonstration by CTOMS shows just how bad it is. Turn up your volume to hear the ultrasound.

These are NOT lifesaving devices and it is a shame that a company sold them to a law enforcement agency as though they were, and worse still that OPP continues to issue them to their officers in spite of being made aware of the issue. Please take the time to ensure that you are carrying a legitimate, life-saving tourniquet.

Set for an August, 2013 “Russian Security and Paramilitary Forces Since 1991” will be of interest to many SSD readers who strive to stay abreast of international military, paramilitary, and LE organizations. Of particular interest are the Russian paramilitary PMCs which have been formed during the Putin administrations and operate outside of direct government control.

USMC Approves Combat Woodland Jacket

Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

At Marine South WL Gore told me that the the Woodland version of the Combat Desert Jacket would soon be approved for wear but that it would be a private purchase item. About three weeks ago I got an email from a reader on Okinawa who was looking to purchase one. I’m not sure if any have shown up in Clothing Sales but the MARADMIN is out authorizing their purchase and wear.

It’s a softshell garment featuring a lightweight, water-resistant fabric with a Gore membrane that is engineered to withstand rain, wind, and sand. Additionally, there are strategically placed stretch zones for increased flexibility and mobility. There is also a moisture-wicking lining. The CDJ also incorporates 99.9 percent pure silver in the gridded fleece lining to inhibit the growth of odor-causing bacteria and fungi in the garment. Early in the production of the original CDJ there were issues getting the printing to match on all of the different fabrics, but they long ago mastered that issue and as you can see from the photo, it looks great.

This waist length jacket features a chest mounted rank tab as well as a single chest and bicep pocket. Finally, there are slash handwarmer pockets on either side.

Elder Heart

Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

Tom Spooner emailed me over this past weekend to tell me about the new cause called Elder Heart. In his email he shared something that really hit home.

“We honor our Beloved Dead by the Lives we Choose to Live. So Live and Love as hard and as fast as you can, each and every day. Everyday is Memorial day!!
CONTINUE!!!”

That said so much about the issue at hand. 22 Veterans commit suicide each day. For me, that’s an epidemic that is killing my brothers and sisters. Too many are coming home with invisible wounds and too many are unemployed, losing hope in their futures. Elder Heart was created to help turn the tide for our Veterans.

Elder Heart is creating a mountain top retreat in Morganton, North Carolina where Veterans from all backgrounds can go to find rest, training, employment and ultimately, to heal.

The program is in its infancy but is taking off like a rocket. Most of the legal paperwork has been done and right now they are in the process of waiting on their tax exempt status. That’s a point for some who might not want to donate yet because donations are not guaranteed for the write off. But, this isn’t just about donating some money to a cause. This is about saving our most precious asset, those men and women who have served, from being hopelessly lost.

Rugby – Rules To The Game

Monday, May 27th, 2013

I love rugby and played while I was stationed in Germany on the 3ID team in an unofficial league made up of military personnel, dependents and expats. We’d travel to other bases and play against their teams and afterwards head to a gasthaus to eat, drink and sing. At the time I weighed about a buck thirty soaking wet so I played hooker. It’s a wonderful sport that’s enjoyed all over the world. Unfortunately, many here in the US do not know the rules of rugby. Hit the jump to learn the basic rules. But I have to warn you. This might not be safe for work if you can’t see a woman in a pair of booty shorts.
