Friday, January 30th, 2015SIG SAUER Issues Statement Regarding ATF Opinion on Stabilizing Braces
Thursday, January 29th, 2015During SHOT Show, SIG SAUER released this statement regarding the recent BATFE open letter on Stabilizing Braces. I had heard it was coming but didn’t look very hard for it during the busy season. Here it is, a week later, but still relevant.
NEWINGTON, N.H. (January 21, 2015)—SIG SAUER, Inc., has issued the following statement about the recent opinion by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in regard to the SB15 and SBX pistol stabilizing braces.
“As reaffirmed in an Open Letter by ATF’s Firearms and Ammunition Technology Division dated January 16, 2015, the Pistol Stabilizing Brace (SB15 and SBX) is legal to own, legal to purchase, and legal to install on a pistol. SIG SAUER believes that the PSB improves the single-handed shooting performance of buffer tube equipped pistols, and offers the product both as an accessory and pre-installed on a number of pistols.
“The Open Letter goes further to rescind a previous private letter regarding the ‘intent’ of the user of the pistol stabilizing brace. In the letter of January 16, 2015, ATF opines that a person’s actual use of the product as a shoulder stock can change the legal classification of the product. However, the Open Letter explicitly states: “ATF hereby confirms that if used as designed—to assist shooters in stabilizing a handgun while shooting with a single hand—the device is not considered a shoulder stock and therefore may be attached to a handgun without making a NFA firearm.”
“We question ATF’s reversal in position that the classification of the brace may be altered by its use. We are reviewing the legal precedents and justification for this position, and will address our concerns with ATF in the near future.
“We will vigorously defend the classification of all of our products and our consumers’ right to use them in accordance with the law. If we find that the open letter opinion is outside the scope of the law, we will seek further review.”
SHOT Show – SAI Jailbreak
Thursday, January 29th, 2015SHOT Show is big! It’s so big that even though we continue to post content almost a week after it ended, we didn’t see anywhere near everything we wanted to. One of the things we missed was the Jailbreak from Salient Arms International.
The Jailbreak is definitely unique. It’s not a muzzle device. It screws on directly to SAI’s rail and can be used with or without a muzzle device. In fact, it can be used in conjunction with virtually any muzzle device.
Yes, that’s a SureFire can sitting just below the Jailbreak which is designed to slow gasses down, reducing felt recoil.

Thursday, January 29th, 2015The newest version of the wrist mounted 2211-series of lights is a lower cost alternative that its predecessors. It relies on an easily swappable, single CR123A to offer 150 lumens at 1.5 hours or 15 lumens at 13 hours. It uses a lightweight polymer body and offers a wide beam. Push button switching at the top of the light gives max power with momentary touch or if you hold it down the light switches to low power mode.

SHOT Show – Yeti Tank
Thursday, January 29th, 2015Down in the bowls of the basement at SHOT Show are some of the coolest products on the show floor. On the third day, I ran across a very packed Yeti booth. So packed, that I couldn’t get a photo of anything. These coolers are popular! They’ve got several new items coming but I thought the readers of SSD might appreciate the Tank.
Offered in 45 and 85 sizes, the Ice Blue is currently in stock with white and Desert Tan coming in April. The larger 85 model will accommodate up to 60 longnecks, 96 cans, 1 keg, 51 blue crabs, 24 mullet & menhaden, 98 slices of watermelon, 20 gallons of trash can punch, or 2 bushels of oysters. Yeti also offers insulated lids for transport, storage, keeping everything cooler longer or as a place to plop down around a campfire.
