Caveat Emptor – Counterfeit Tourniquets Are Still An Issue

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2015

We first mentioned counterfeit Combat Application Tourniquets back in 2010 and they had already been a problem for awhile. Recently, there has been a rash of these fake products showing up in various supply chains of law enforcement and first responder agencies. For example, this clinical bulletin was issued just this week by the New Hampshire Department of Safety.

According to North American Rescue, they’ve identified six different counterfeit CATs.  While this link offers a great comparison between a genuine CAT and a counterfeit, the simplest thing to check is the windlass.  If it isn’t stiff, ask for a real one.

TNVC – Night Vision / Thermal Capability Comparison

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2015

This is an article on the comparison between Image Intensification and Thermal Capability produced by TNVC, which we are republishing with their consent. It’s a rather lengthy piece but worth the jump.

The term “night vision” actually covers two technologies: Image Intensification and Thermal. These two technologies have undergone significant development over the past 25 years and made tremendous leaps in the past 15 throughout the Global War on Terror. They have provided unprecedented advantages to the warfighter on the battlefield and law enforcement professionals in their never ending struggles to keep this country safe. And like most technologies born on the battlefield, tactical eventually becomes practical. With the rising popularity of nighttime hog and predator hunting in the United States, more and more hunters are finding themselves shopping for night vision gear. Night Vision Hunting has become the fastest growing segment of the hunting market and many hunters are asking: “what type of device is best for me?” The law enforcement community is asking itself these same questions as many agencies are finding a need to better equip themselves at night in order to keep the streets safe.

Disruptive Tech – Home Brewed Pistol Firing Drone

Tuesday, July 21st, 2015

Here’s another example of, “just becuase you can, doesn’t mean you should.”

We’re pretty sure this isn’t the first armed civilian drone, and it won’t be the last, that is until someone does something stupid and there’s a crackdown. Some don’t think it’s real but this guy did some analysis of the footage and believes it is: www.wired.com/2015/07/uh-oh-video-pistol-firing-drone-probably-real/

What The Heck Is This ‘Charleston Loophole’ I Keep Hearing About?

Tuesday, July 21st, 2015

Lately, gun grabbers have been calling for an end to the ‘Charieston Loophole’.  The problem is, I can’t figure out what it is.

According to FBI Director James Comey, Charleston Church shooter Dylann Roof should not have been able to purchase a handgun, but that the National Criminal Background Check System which is used to determine whether a firearms purchaser can legally do so, made a mistake. As far as I can tell, there’s no loophole here.

Dylan’s Roof didn’t exploit a “loophole” in the law. There’s a system that’s been in place for years and should have denied hisirxhase and referred him to local authorities. But that system didn’t work. Unfortunately, this ‘mistake’ resulted in prohibited person purchasing a firearm who then used it to murder good people. People died at a prayer meeting as a result of the FBI’s negligence.

What should be done is a hard look at the inefficiency of the National Criminal Background Check System and a reckoning for those who don’t enforce existing firearms laws and don’t follow up when prohibited persons attempt to purchase them.

Maybe I’m wrong, and you can explain this ‘Charieston Loophole’ to me?
