SHOT Show – Downeast Innovations

Wednesday, January 20th, 2016

Downeast Innovations is a design house that has developed numerous products including the MOLLE frame and FASTMag. They showed us two new innovations that are coming soon.

This is the Gemini buckle which is made up of two symmetrical buckle components. It’s designed for heavy loads yet offers a light fingertip release. You can also squeeze the buckle to get it to release. While this is a prototype buckle, the molds are done and production buckles will be available within two weeks.

Next up is an upgrade to the PALS compatible attachment of the FASTMag. Its easier to use than the current version (bottom).

Tuesday, January 19th, 2016

FirstSpear has introduced a Soft Harness for Visual Augmentation Systems (NVGs).  It features an adjustable chinstrap with Team Wendy’s dial at the rear as well as a Wilcox shroud.

I really like the padding at the brown and the skull cap for the rear of the head to keep it in place.

SHOT Show – Magpul Softgoods

Tuesday, January 19th, 2016

Launching Spring 2016, Magpul has a new Softgoods line consisting of 15 new items.  You’ve already seen the gloves and belts but there’s much more.

The idea wasn’t to start another tactical line but rather offer clothing that Magpul customers would wear everyday.  Consisting of pants, shirts, t-shirts and hats the clothing is technical in design but casual in appearance.

For example, they’ve integrated anti-bacterial, moisture wicking and stain resistance into the fabrics.  Additionally, the pants have a gusseted crotch and the shirts have shoulder seams moved slightly forward to be more comfortable when wearing packs.  They’ve also developed their own fit block which incorprates the ability to layer as well as carry concealed.

They advertise 1200 hours on nominal setting (12 daytime, 3 NVG) from a cross mounted CR123A. it offers a latger field of view than its closest competitor and is manufactired from an aluminum housing for strength. It features a solid state optical path and Elcan has conducted exhaustive testing to ensure the is no thermal drift up to the design target range of -40 to 160 deg F.
