Further Successes for 40mm Ammunition from Rheinmetall: Supply orders from Asia for Rheinmetall Denel Munition – Expansion of the Customer Base

Tuesday, July 12th, 2022

Rheinmetall has scored further contract successes in the field of 40mm ammunition. The South African subsidiary Rheinmetall Denel Munition has been awarded contracts for the supply of 40mm ammunition by two customers in Asia. In one case, this is a new customer who has ordered 400,000 40mm low-velocity grenades. These are to be delivered by December 2022. In the other case, an existing customer ordered 100,000 rounds of medium velocity grenades. These are to be delivered between December 2022 and February 2023. In total, the order is worth about 25 million euros.
“With these two contracts, we are expanding our customer base in Asia,” says Jan-Patrick Helmsen, CEO Rheinmetall Denel Munition. Negotiations are already underway to increase the quantities.

Rheinmetall Denel Munition offers a comprehensive range of high-quality 40mm ammunition, including. 40x46mm Low Velocity (LV), 40x53mm High Velocity (HV) and 40x51mm Medium Velocity (MV).

The 40mm MV ammunition has a range of up to 800 metres – 200 metres more than comparable products on the market. The 40mm LV ammunition has a range of up to 400 metres. Both types of ammunition use a High Explosive Dual Purpose projectile. This combines fragmentation and shaped charge, which has a high penetrating power. It can be used against bunkers and armoured targets and can penetrate 50 mm rolled homogenous armour (RHA).

The ammunition is manufactured in accordance with international standards and is suitable for use with suitably qualified grenade launchers of the latest generation.

Considerable Order in the USA: Rheinmetall to Develop 30mm x 173 Airburst Solution for the U.S. Navy

Thursday, June 30th, 2022

Rheinmetall to develop a new medium caliber ammunition for the U.S. Navy: The Group’s subsidiary American Rheinmetall Munitions, Inc. based in Stafford, VA has been awarded a $14.3 million (€13.5 million) contract under a U.S. Navy other transaction agreement (OTA) to prototype a low-cost engagement capability that increases the effectiveness of existing and future Naval gun weapon systems against air and surface threats.

The resulting prototype system will lead to an Initial Operating Capability for the 30mm x 173 MK 340 MOD 0 Kinetic Energy Electronically Timed (KEET) airburst munition. The MK 340 KEET is derived from the NATO-qualified Rheinmetall 30mm x 173 Kinetic Energy Timed Fuze (KETF) cartridge currently fielded by the Australian, German, and Hungarian militaries. The system will provide significant lethality improvements and a reduction in rounds fired due to the increased first-round hit probability.

“We are excited to deliver our next-generation lethality solutions to the U.S. Navy for the first time. This award further demonstrates American Rheinmetall’s ability to bring innovative technologies into the hands of our U.S. Joint Force,” said American Rheinmetall Munitions CEO John Somich.

The company is presently expanding its role as a major supplier of innovative, next-generation weapons and ammunition in the U.S., drawing on a global portfolio of world-class munitions and armaments offered by Rheinmetall and its affiliates. For example, American Rheinmetall Munitions is currently producing game-changing solutions including 40mm airburst fuzing for the U.S. Army and the PGU-48/B Frangible Armor Piercing cartridge for the U.S. Air Force F35A Joint Strike Fighter. The company has been producing and supplying high-performance practice and direct fire service ammunition for American military and law enforcement customers for several decades.

American Rheinmetall Munitions is part of the American Rheinmetall family of U.S. defense companies which includes American Rheinmetall Systems in Biddeford, ME, American Rheinmetall Vehicles in Sterling Heights, MI, and U.S. corporate parent American Rheinmetall Defense in Reston, VA.

PCP Tactical Selected to Produce Lightweight Polymer Cased Ammunition for the U.S. Army

Friday, June 10th, 2022

PCP Tactical LLC, a defense contractor headquartered in Vero Beach, Florida has been awarded an Ordnance Technology Initiative Agreement (OTIA) from the National Armaments Consortium – DoD Ordnance Technology Consortium (NAC-DOTC) to produce 7.62mm lightweight small caliber ammunition for the US Army.  This award directly supports Project Manager Maneuver Ammunition Systems (PM MAS) efforts to reduce weight for Army soldiers over-burdened by their combat load. The introduction of lightweight small caliber ammunition in a polymer case material will improve the soldier’s mobility on the battlefield to increase soldier’s lethality and survivability.

“PCP Tactical/Gorilla Ammunition has been designing and delivering weapons and lightweight polymer cased ammunition solutions to the Department of Defense for almost a decade,” said Lanse Padgett, Chief Executive Officer of PCP Tactical and Gorilla Ammunition, “and we are extremely pleased to be chosen by the Army to collaboratively develop polymer cased ammunition.”

The agreement requires PCP Tactical to produce lightweight polymer cased 7.62mm M80A1 and M62A1 ammunition that can function properly at the extreme environmental conditions anticipated on the future battlefield. The ammunition is expected to meet or exceed the internal ballistic and terminal performance requirements of current brass cased ammunition, while reducing the weight by approximately 30 percent. The M240 machine gun is the primary weapon for this effort, but the lightweight polymer ammunition is also compatible with the M14 Semi-Automatic Rifle, M110 Rifle, and the M134 Mini-Gun.

“PCP Tactical has developed an incredible working relationship with the Army over the past ten years,” said Padgett, “we have provided legacy ammunition calibers as well as next generation calibers to include armor piercing rounds to the Army.  We have also provided enhanced new weapons systems and barrel conversion kits for legacy guns to reduce weight while increasing lethality.  Over the last several years polymer case technology has progressed tremendously, and we are anxious to get the ammunition qualified for use by our soldiers and allies.”

For questions feel free to call PCP Tactical at 772-564-0777.
