More M4s On The Way From Colt & FN

Sunday, September 27th, 2015

Announced by DoD on Friday.

Colt Defense LLC, West Hartford, Connecticut (15QKN-15-D-0102); and FN America LLC, Columbia, South Carolina (W15QKN-15-D-0072), were awarded a $212,000,000 firm-fixed-price multi-year contract for M4 and M4A1 carbines for the Army and others, with an estimated completion date of Sept. 24, 2020. Bids were solicited via the Internet with six received. Funding and work location will be determined with each order. Army Contracting Command, Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey, is the contracting activity.

There’s a lot of conjecture out there about this contract, but keeping the lines open through 2020 is a good move, especially considering the USMC’s interest in the M4.  I don’t see this as a response by DoD to the Colt bankruptcy but rather indicates their faith in the brand as a reliable contractor. It is my assessment that the Colt portion of this contract is in spite of the bankruptcy, rather than in reaction to it.

MDM – Colt CK901

Thursday, September 24th, 2015

Walking past the Colt booth at Modern Day Marine I saw this out of the corner of my eye.

It’s the Colt CK901 which uses the 901 lower receiver type in 7.62×39 and accepts an AK47 magazine.

DSEI – Steyr Mannlicher STM 556

Monday, September 21st, 2015

Steyr Mannlicher continues to exhibit their short piston take on the AR style carbine which first debuted in 2012. Unfortunately, it seems that it remains in development with further refinements still to come.

The one-piece upper integrates the railed forend. As you can see, this upper design offers a quick swap barrel feature. There are four gas regulator settings: Standard, Extreme Condition, Silencer, and Cut Off.  Additionally, it incorporates a dry film lubricant.

The four bolts in the upper reciever are associated with steel guide rail inserts for the dry film lubricant system.

The weapon can be loaded and unloaded with the weapon on safe.  There’s no need to pull the hammer to the rear in order to place the weapon on safe.  According to the man at the booth, the production version will sport a new butt stock and magazine by Steyr.

I Didn’t Know This Magazine Was Still Around

Thursday, July 23rd, 2015

I loved this magazine as a kid. Looks like they’ve changed their content a little though.

Another great bit of propaganda from Hodge Defense Systems, Inc.
