Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

Sure, protesters and bandits use black ski masks to in order to hide their identities, but this new Pixelhead mask is intended by its creator, Martin Backes to serve as “media camouflage”for those weary of finding themselves on Google Streetview and Facebook. This model features two eye slits and is printed in a pixelated image of German Secretary of the Interior Defense Minister Thomas de Maizière.

Volk Tactical Adds A-TACS

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

About a year ago we introduced you to niche Japanese brand Volk Tactical. Recently, they contacted us with news that they had begun to produce products in the A-TACS pattern.

While Volk Tactical has been primarily serving the enthusiast market, you can see that their kit looks pretty good in A-TACS and helps give an idea of the realm of the possible.

Once again, we would like to let our Japanese readers know that our thoughts are with them in this difficult time and we wish them health, safety and a swift recovery.

Patchwork of Camouflage

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

ABC News Chief Political Correspondent George Stephanapoulos wrote the coalition enforcing the no-fly zone over Libya looked like a “Patchwork of Camouflage” after seeing this photo yesterday of a Task Force ODYSSEY DAWN planning meeting aboard flagship USS Mount Whitney.

I get his sentiment but looking at the photo, I only see a few patterns. You want to see a real mishmash of uniforms check out a planning meeting during the height of OIF or heck even a current one in Afghanistan. The room will look like a military surplus catalog exploded.

Criticism of SSD’s Coverage of the Army Family of Camouflage Patterns Effort

Monday, March 14th, 2011

We received a letter last week from a reader criticizing our coverage of the Army’s Family of Patterns effort. First off, it is important that you know that the author is involved commercially in the development of camouflage patterns. It is also important that SSD readers realize that we are in no way affiliated with the US Government and do not represent the views of the military but rather function as a news outlet serving the tactical industry. While we appreciate the time it obviously took to craft this letter, it seems as if the writer is expecting SSD to explain Army decisions. Since we are in no way involved in the acquisition process this is impossible. However, we will do our best to address the concerns of this writer from our perspective, based on our attendance at Industry Day and our interaction with Government and industry over the past few years. Hopefully, this article will help to expand your understanding of the upcoming Family of Patterns solicitation to be released later this week. Due to the length of the letter please read the rest of the story. (more…)
