Stuff I Like – Remix Raglan Tech L/S from Anetik

Tuesday, December 15th, 2020

During a recent visit to Phoenix I stopped by a local outdoor store, which I generally do while on the road. Invariably, I run across a hidden gem and this trip was no different.

Just Roughin’ It is located in Scottsdale and caters to the local outdoor enthusiast. Being a small outdoor shop is tough these days and no one who stays in business can afford to stock their store with stuff people aren’t going to buy. They know their customer and they know the local environment. They also host seminars. If you’re in the area, stop by and check them out.

Quite a few things caught my eye as I browsed the aisles, but then I saw something that looked like a combat shirt with lizard pattern sleeves and a grey body.

Appropriately enough, the manufacturer Anetik promises, “comfort in chaos.” Meet the REMIX Tech L/S.

There’s lots to love. The knit fabric offers UPF30+ protection and incorporates what Anetik refers to as VINT Cooling Technology for airflow. It also features Raglan sleeves so there are no seams on top of your shoulders when wearing a pack. Yeah, it’s a lot like a combat shirt and it’s very comfortable. However, it’s nylon so don’t think it’s FR. Great for summers out in the sun. You won’t overheat and it will protect you from UV.

There’s an extra in the layout as well, a quick stash back zipper pocket at the right hem which can be used to stow items when running.

I haven’t had it pill or pull yet, but if there’s a weak link so far in the design, it’s the collar which is narrow and made from the same fabric as the rest of the shirt.

Offered in XS – 3XL. The fabric has some mechanical stretch but get your normal size, unless you want it to fit loose.

Yes, This Was An Issue PT Uniform

Saturday, December 12th, 2020

Commonly referred to as the “banana suit,” this 70-era track suit saw service well into the late 80s when it was replaced by a Grey ensemble that absorbed stains.

Prior to its adoption as a measure to help professionalize the post-draft VOLAR, or volunteer Army, a soldiers wore fatigues for physical fitness trining. Initially with boots, and eventually with running shoes.

The banana suit consisted of yellow top and bottom along with yellow shorts with black piping and a reversible yellow to black t-shirt. That last item was so that units could conduct sports, with one team yellow and the other black.

Friday Focus – FirstSpear Stratton Flannels In Stock & New Colors

Friday, December 11th, 2020

FirstSpear’s new winter weight Stratton Flannels have arrived early in three new great looking colors black/white multi plaid, black/white/navy multi plaid and navy/white/gold multi plaid. Enter black and white These flannels are 100% American made in heavier 9 ounce weight. Premium construction with oversized breast pockets, exterior hang loop, and two button closure on forearm and cuff. They are machine washable and oversized to accommodate 3% shrinkage after a few cycles in the wash. Please note that the Stratton Flannel is an oversized design, step down one size from your normal T-shirt size for a standard fit.

“I have had this flannel for about a year and it is my go to fall and winter shirt. Quality is excellent. On par or better than Filson. Does run big. I’m 6ft 200lbs with a 34 in waist and generally wear an XL. I bought a large and dried it on hot and it fits well. Probably could get away with a medium for a really fitted look.” —Online Review

“When they say they ship one size larger it ships a size larger. May shrink a little after washing. Great fit for me I’m a little on the tall side so the longer sleeves and broad shoulders is perfect. The 9 oz is great up north in the mountains. Keeps you warm but if there’s a lot of wind get a cheater for it. Otherwise I feel like I can cut down a whole damn forest with this thing on. It’s not your cheap Walmart flannel and worth every penny. Save up and get one.” —Online Review

Maharishi – Photojournalist Shirt

Thursday, December 10th, 2020

My favorite movie of all time is “Apocalypse Now” so it’s a rare treat that I get to combine that movie and SSD (unless you follow our IG account).

For years I’ve threatened to show up to SHOT Show dressed as the Photojournalist, played by Dennis Hopper. Sure, I’ve got Tigerstripe coming out of my ears, but that Montagnard shirt is a tough nut to crack. That is until now.

London’s Maharishi has introduced the Photojournalist Shirt, featuring “Hill Tribe Embroidery.” Of course, I ordered it. It’s not a stitch for stitch copy, but you can definitely see the inspiration.

I purchased the Black version, but they also make an OD one. Made from crushed hemp, the shirt is very comfortable. The embroidery is also very nicely done but the full length sleeves are a bit long to be an accurate copy. Additionally, it’s European sizing, so go up one.

I’ve been a Maharishi customer for years and they’ve created some amazing camouflage patterns and styles. It’s always been cool to return from London with a surprise or two. But these days, they have a store front in New York, and even an order from the home office is dispatched the the US in a matter of days so I don’t have to wait fit a trip overseas.

Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Yes.

Look for the photojournalist at a SHOT Show in the future.

US Army Develops Advanced Integrated Kneepad for Army Combat Pant

Wednesday, December 9th, 2020

For years the Army Combat Pant has used the Crye Precision AirFlex Kneepad. The Army has had to buy them from Crye Precision and not owning the Intellectual Property isn’t able to make changes or outsource manufacturing elsewhere.

USSOCOM uses a different two-piece kneepad for their Level 9 combat uniform which was developed by Patagonia. It’s called the Versatile Integrated Knee Protection with a padded portion placed inside a pocket at the knee with four grommets to accommodate connecting a hard shell component to the outside.

Adoption of the VIKP would have put the Army in the same position regarding changes and manufacturing.

For some time the Army been working on an alternative and it looks like they’re getting close to fielding the Advanced Integrated Kneepad. Like the Patagonia VIKP, it’s a two-piece design, but connects via straps.

The differences in the AIK design required the Army to make changes to the ACP knee.

The Technical Data Package (TDP) for the Supply Request Package (SRP) is expected to be submitted to DLA 2nd Qtr FY 21 so it can be procured from industry.

Planned improvements will include various threat level protections as necessary and integration across additional operational ensembles such as the new Chemical Biological Protective Suit and National Fire Service Smoke Jumper Garment.

USMC to Evaluate New PT Gear

Tuesday, December 8th, 2020

According to a recent briefing by Marine Corps Systems Command’s Program Manager Infantry Combat Equipment, the service is preparing to evaluate a new functional Physical Training Uniform that is made from a high-performance fabric that is comfortable, moisture wicking, antimicrobial, and reflective.

Consisting of only Shorts and T-shirt, it will replace the current GP Trunks and OD synthetic T-shirt currently worn. In addition to the issue shorts, the Marines plan on offering an optional purchase version for running. The garments will also be reflective.

Testing is planned for 4th Qtr FY 21 with issue to new recruits beginning in 2nd Qtr FY 22. They’ll be available for purchase soon thereafter, with mandatory possession anticipated for 1 October 2023.
