MDM – Forward Solutions LLC

Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

Forward Solutions LLC was founded by two Marine EOD Wounded Warriors who are giving back to the community in more ways than one. They’ve got whole slew of cool guy kit but the latest product to come out is the Blast Training Model (BTM1). Available in multiple sizes from small IEDs to devices designed to take out vehicles, the heart of the BMT1 is a new patented binary compound that produces lots of noise but little blast effect.

As you can see it can be configured in a plastic jug to simulate threat profiles but other packaging is available based on client requirements.

The concept was to create the signature of an IED without the dangers associated with more traditional materials. Furthermore, EOD wanted a training compound that was adaptable to multiple initiation systems and packaging.

Deployable Anomaly Ground Reconnaissance System

Thursday, July 19th, 2012

Developed by Mav6 for a Government user, the new Deployable Anomaly Ground Reconnaissance System (DAGRS) is a man-portable multi-sensor mine and anomaly detection platform designed for high-mobility dismounted operations. At just under 5 lbs the baseline system consists of an integrated pulse induction loop sensor and passive magnetometer.

The compact form factor (2″x3″x8″ in stowed) includes a stabbing probe to interrogate soft material concealants (e.g. hay bails, underbrush, etc.) as well as a 40 in retractable sensor arm for deployment of various sensor payloads (ie Pulse Induction loop). Currently, battery life is in excess of 5 hours depending on mode of operation.

What makes DAGRS very exciting is its open architecture design that can easily accommodate additional sensor modules. AS the threat adapts, so can DAGRS. For example, an advanced DAGRS system that includes an advanced Central Computational Unit (CCU) with 1) enhanced multi-sensor processing and fusion, 2) data acquisition and analysis, 3) mapping and geopositioning, and 4) wireless integration with smart devices for remote sensor visualization and control is currently in development. Additionally, advanced DAGRS also includes additional sensor options which include Ground Penetrating Radar, LWIR camera (for detection of thermal gradients), FT-IR spectrometer (for characterization of explosive effluents), Non-Linear Junction Detector (for detection of circuit boards), as well as accelerometers and gradiometer.

Baseline prototypes are being delivered to the Government next month and DAGRS will be available for commercial and Government sales in the Fall of 2012.

Video Fiberscope with Working Channels from Tactical Electronics

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

The Video Fiberscope with Working Channels from Tactical Electronics combines three EOD specific tools with the functionality of a Video Fiberscope. The kit comes with tripod grasper tool, alligator grasper tool, and wire cutter tool which can be inserted and controlled from the base of the unit’s flexible neck. The tools exit out the distal end of the probe for in-package manipulation while the camera simultaneously captures all activity inside the package. Utilizing these three tools with a camera allows EOD operators to gain visual access into a package while manipulating the content from one entry hole.

EOD Techs, be sure to check this out at Warrior Expo East.

Forces Focus – USAF EOD

Monday, May 14th, 2012

While they are EOD, these guys aren’t training for dive school. No, this is all about water survival and they are using their PT time to focus on a threat that has taken the life of one of their own. Air Force EOD techs don’t attend dive school.

Here you can see members of the 380th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron during PT. “We do the pool training because the only Air Force EOD officer to have died in the current conflicts was Capt. Kermit Evans, who passed away when he was forced to bail out from a helicopter over a lake in Iraq,” said Capt. John Fuson, 380th ECES EOD officer in charge. “This just proves that we must be ready for any situation at any time while deployed. In addition to the survival point of the training, pool PT provides an added avenue for fitness and calorie burning.”

EOD techs also conduct CrossFit training in order to maintain top shape for dismounted operations with the US Army. In a DVIDS news article explained, “We do this training because we have to be able to pull our weight, carry our gear and, if necessary, carry a teammate to safety in any situation we may encounter, whether that be rucks on dismounted patrols, water survival, or surviving a blast from an [improvised explosive device]. Mental and physical recovery is significantly more effective when one is physically fit.”

Medford Knife & Tool – USMC EOD-1

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

During SHOT Show we broke the story about Greg Medford, head honcho at Medford Knife & Tool receiving the official letter form the Marine Corps making the new MKT USMC EOD-1 Knife is the approved replacement for the legacy knife. Designed in cooperation with EOD techs at 29 Palms, the EOD-1 is a thick, solid tool built to hammer, pry, guide wire, probe and of course cut and saw. It is extremely heavy duty.

Here’s Greg talking about the new knife and explaining its features:
