This should have been shared yesterday, but I spent all day behind the wheel. It’s just as good today.

High Angle Solutions – Silva Tactical Compasses

Wednesday, February 21st, 2018

Three entrepreneurial brothers. One great invention. In 1933, Björn, Alvar and Arvid Kjellström invented the first ever liquid-filled compass, and the Silva began. Not only was it the first compass of its kind, but is also set the global standard for how navigation works.

From this beginning, 85 years ago, Silva have grown significantly.  As part of that expansion they have been making compasses for militaries all over the world for a number of decades.  This has predominantly been based on the Expedition 4, which was due an update.  Following development work with the Royal Marines and other elements of the UK military Silva have now launched an updated range of compasses.

The new range includes a more robust base plate and bezel which address the needs of a challenging operational environment.  It also brings in line a number of interesting technologies including prismatic elements for commanders and global needles for expeditionary forces required to deploy anywhere across the globe.  Included in the package are lanyards with distance measuring scales for 1:25000 and 1:50000.  They also allow measurement in both mils and degrees enabling greater accuracy and the passage of accurate information for fires as well as air.

Alongside these must have navigation tools Silva also provide headlamps, binos, mapcases and a huge range of accessories to help you find your way.  If you want any further information please email tribe@brigantes.com.

High Angle Solutions is a weekly series of articles focusing on military mountaineering solutions. It’s brought to you by UK-based , in conjunction with several other brands, both here in the US and abroad.

Hill People Gear – longhouse: Land Navigation

Monday, August 7th, 2017

I fully admit that I love the company Hill People Gear, their products, and what they do. It’s things like their longhouse series of videos that fuel that admiration. This one is near and dear to my heart. Land navigation is a skill anyone who spends time in the outdoors needs to develop and practice. Electronics are great, but they rely on power. You never know when the batteries may go dead for the day, a week, or God forbid, a lifetime. This video offers an introduction to land navigation including maps, orienting a map, three methods for locating your position on a map, planning a route, and executing a route.

Even though resources like this exist on the web, actually learn how to do things. Don’t think you’re going to rely on a web-based resource to teach you a skill in the back country, when you need it. Chances are good you won’t have a connection.

NEMO Equipment Celebrates 15th Anniversary With Wooden Spoon Shaper Kit

Wednesday, June 28th, 2017

First off, it’s hard to believe that NEMO Equipment has been around for 15 years. Man, has that time flown. Congratulations to NEMO Equipment and in particular to their founder, Cam Brensinger. Everytime I talk to him I learn something new, but one thing that has never come up, is his love of carving. I found out about that when NEMO released their 15th Anniversary Spoon Shaper Kit. Cam assembled these kits in order to help others pick up his hobby.

It consists of a straight blade knife, a hook knife, a folding saw, a leather strop mounted on bamboo, handmade by Cam, and a pencil and sandpaper, all nestled in a custom waxed canvas tool roll. All you need is a piece of wood and a lazy afternoon.

Kinetic Development Group – Moral Compass

Tuesday, October 11th, 2016

I’ve loved compasses since I was in Scouting as a kid. Sure enough, the guy at KDG who came up with this is also a former Scout. That’s probably why the Moral Compass from Kinetic Development Group struck a chord with me.

I carry a small, similar compass on my person, anytime I’m in the back country or more than an hour away from home. But, I think I’m going to replace it with this one and also get one for each of my sons, to remind them to always stay on the path.

A compass can only point you in the right direction, it can’t make you go there…

Some people already have a moral compass, others could certainly use one! For those that need one, KDG is happy to announce our new solid brass compass!

No one likes to feel lost in life, and at times it can be hard to keep your bearings. The KDG Moral Compass helps find direction. While it can’t replace that inner sense which distinguishes what is right from wrong, it will serve as a reminder to use good judgement. Built off of a traditional Marble’s® brass body compass, our Moral Compass shares the legacy of great men and adventures worldwide. Undaunted men such as Teddy Roosevelt carried similar compasses on remote expeditions, safaris, and big game hunts. Arctic Explorers Admiral Perry and Byrd often trusted a neck worn compass on treks to the North and South Pole. They have been carried by Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airman for decades all across the world. When you are in a tough spot, our Moral Compass will show you the way out!

Day or night, in the dark woods or a dimly lit nightclub, our Moral Compass with guide you. The brass construction and crisp lettering makes this a great present for your friends, family, and anyone you want to send a subtle message to that might have lost their way.

Specs:
-Solid Brass Bar Stock Construction
-Precision Machined
-Strong, Malleable, Waterproof
-Ultra Smooth Agate Jewel Bearing
-Virtually Shatterproof Crystal
-Revolving Black Face
-Luminous Green Letters
-Impact resistant crystal
