An Homage To Kilroy

Tuesday, February 25th, 2014

My friend Dave Hall and artist Elwood’Woody’ T. Risk pay homage to Kilroy as they raise money to film the documentary ‘Until It Hurts‘ about this unique piece of art of the same name.

Kilroy

On September 11, 2012, a Navy SEAL Sniper (SOCS Dave Hall, USN, Ret.) fired a .308 Remington 700 custom built for him by another former SEAL Sniper (SOCS Chris Higgins) at a humanoid target from 911 yards. The goal was to strike the black (scoring) part of the target 79 times (once for each fallen NSW member since 9-11). ‘Until It Hurts’ is the result of that effort.

A print of the original hangs proudly in my home. Visit www.indiegogo.com/projects/until-it-hurts-a-navy-seal-documentary to see how you can help.

Hot Shots Casting Call

Hot Shots Calendar has issued an open casting call (ladies only please) for the 2015 edition. The actual photo shoot will be in June, here in the US, but they are looking for models from both the US as well as the UK. This is a pretty big deal because up to now, all of the models have been British. Proceeds from Hot Shots Calendar supports such charities as Help For Heroes which offers practical, direct support to the UK’s wounded as well as the Special Operations Warrior Foundation here in the US.

until IT IS zero Project

Monday, February 10th, 2014

warrior-thunder-foundation

The until IT IS zero Project is working to help reduce the number of Veteran suicides from 22 per day to ZERO. This multi-phased project, hosted by the Warrior Thunder Foundation, a MA-based nonprofit and in conjunction with other organizations is attacking the issue with several events over the next year. Although centered in around the New England area, I think these local efforts do the most good because you have people working in their own back yards and responsible for people they know.

THE PLAN

Phase I – We will bring the “Graffiti of War Project” to the Boston area on August 8 – 10, 2014. The art exposition, done by those in combat and after combat, offers a unique, individual perpective, through their eyes and their emotions. Each image represents a moment in time, when an emotion was captured in ink, paint, or pencil, an unconventional historical record of this generation’s war. Our Mission is that through sharing these images, we will begin a dialog between soldier and civilian, to bridge this ever-widening divide between those who have endured these wars and the rest of the world that can only imagine the horrors. To bring understanding and true empathy of what these men and women experience during modern conflicts. There will also be workshops for Veterans looking to use art therapy in their lives.

Phase II – We will host “the MILITARY and PTSD” in the Boston area in late October 2014. This conference will provide education for civilian mental healthcare professionals on the special nuances of the military and those with combat-related PTSD, TBI and transitional issues. With Veterans flocking away from the over-burdened VA system, the civilian mental health care professionals will be the ones to treat our men and women who have served. We need to ensure that they are familiar with the special differences of treating someone with combat-related PTSD.

Phase III – In late spring of 2015, we will host a free PTSD Retreat in a quiet, remote location for military and Veteran individuals and couples struggling with PTSD to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet, some great food, and the opportunity to learn about some non-medicinal, alternative therapy for PTSD like yoga, sacro-cranial massage etc. Peace, quiet, great chow and healing! What more could you want?

One Of The Many Reasons You Should Support The Green Beret Foundation

Saturday, January 11th, 2014

This video is part of the Green Beret Foundation’s “Everyday Heroes in the Special Forces Community” video series about Green Berets and their family members. The videos share the story of these heroes’ military service and their work in their communities as they come home from war.

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting SFC( Ret) Michael R Rodriguez who spent 21 years in the US Army, 15 of which were with Special Forces. He has had numerous combat deployments throughout his career, including Somalia, Afghanistan, and Haiti, as well as Central and South America. He served as an 18D, Special Forces Medic, as well as a Sniper Instructor at the Special Forces Sniper Course. Since retiring, Michael has focused his time on his three sons and his work as a blacksmith. Two of his knives have been auctioned off to raise money for the Green Beret Foundation, and he hopes to do more in the future to contribute to the foundation. Michael has also set a goal to climb the “Seven Summits” and has already climbed Mount Kilimanjaro where he conducted the first ever research on the effects of altitude and elevation on traumatic brain injury, and as a result was inducted into the famed Explorers Club as a Fellow.

I exchanged a few messages with Rodriguez prior to SHOT Show and he told me he will at the show representing the Green beret Foundation. He told me that they’ve done a lot for him and he wants to do everything to help give back.

Participate in the American Silencer Association Silent Auction at SHOT Show

Friday, January 10th, 2014

The American Silencer Association is conducting a silent auction at SHOT Show to raise money for advocacy and lobbying efforts in 2014. Their primary focuses include defeating ATF 41P, expanding state ownership and hunting laws, and decreasing NFA transfer times. They have an aggressive plan in place for 2014, but need funding to properly execute. ASA would like to raise at least $25,000 at this year’s SHOT Show. Help them by supporting our industry, and supporting the association.

The auction will begin on Tuesday, and end at the close of the show on Thursday. Winners will be contacted on Friday. Each auction item will be located in the donor’s booth. Manufacturers are competing to see who can raise the most money for the ASA. The company that wins will receive an award for their efforts on behalf of the association.

Johnny PMAGs Still Available Through Grey Ghost

Wednesday, January 8th, 2014

Limited numbers of these magazines are still available for those who want to support John’s kids.

During SHOT Show Drake Clark reached me about helping out with an upcoming project. John Noveske had just passed away and Magpul was going to commit to a run of special “Johnny” PMAGs to raise money for his family. He asked if I would help. While I had only met John once through the introduction of Stickman, we had quite a few friends in common. And, I appreciated his hard work and innovation. “Sure,” I told Drake, “count me in!”

Now, I know some of you guys are asking yourselves why the family of a guy who owned a business would need money. Well, my answer is simple. It’s for his kids. Very, very few small business owners are rich, or even well off. They work insane hours and put everything extra back into the business. And now, in the case of Noveske Rifleworks, John – the creative force behind the brand, is gone. It will never be the same and the lives of his kids will never be the same. As a father and small business owner, I can tell you, none of this was lost on me. It’s the reason I agreed to be a part of this and a reason I purchased some of these magazines when they were first available.

20130829-141312.jpg

Now mind you, all of this planning for the Johnny mag was going on during the panic of 2013. Despite this, Magpul came through with the initial push which they offered in conjunction with Noveske. And then, another tragedy struck, and a similar magazine-based fundraising campaign came along. And during that period, in late Spring, 300 Johnny PMAGs showed up at my door. When I was planning to start this fundraising effort, I foolishly thought I could offer them through PayPal, but I soon found out that wasn’t possible. Then, eBay was a bust. SSD has a long reach but what we don’t have is a web store. Once the other fundraising effort ended I reached out to my friends at Grey Ghost Gear and they thankfully agreed to handle the sales aspect of this effort.

If you missed out on the initial run of Johnny mags, Grey Ghost has just under 300 (they are selling already). The Johnny PMAG is a Magpul GEN M2 30 round PMAG designed for 5.56×45 NATO and .223 Remington AR15/ M4 platform weapons. This memorial magazine includes the Noveske “Flaming Pig” on one side, and the Noveske logo on the flip side.
