Capacity Building for Ammunition Production: Foundation Stone Laid at New Rheinmetall Ammunition Factory in Várpalota, Hungary

Wednesday, January 18th, 2023

The foundation stone has been laid for the new Rheinmetall plant in Várpalota, Hungary, where ammunition for various systems will be produced by the joint venture Rheinmetall Hungary Munitions in cooperation with the Hungarian state. Production of 33mm-medium-calibre ammunition for the Lynx infantry fighting vehicle now being manufactured at the Rheinmetall plant in Zalaegerszeg is scheduled to start in 2024.

In a second phase, production capacity will be expanded and the product range widened to include other ammunition types.

A longstanding strategic partner of Hungary, Rhein¬metall AG will then be able to produce ammunition for the Leopard 2 tank and PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzer at the Várpalota plant. Both of these systems are used by the Hungarian Army. Part of the production is earmarked for the Hungarian armed forces, with some products destined for export.

Full production capacity will be reached in 2025. In addition, Rheinmetall also plans to conduct R&D in Várpalota.

The Group is thus systematically expanding its ammunition production capacity. It recently announced the acquisition of Spanish ammunition maker Expal, which will double its manufacturing capacity in this domain.

Rheinmetall also produces ammunition in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, South Africa, and Australia.

Rheinmetall is an important partner of Hungary, helping the country to achieve its strategic goals and develop its national defence industry. With this plant, Rheinmetall will be able to meet Hungary’s future ammunition needs as well as the growing demand for ammunition from Germany’s other partner countries. In addition to capital expenditure in Várpalota, Rheinmetall has been investing in extra production capacity and a development centre in Zalaegerszeg, where vehicle systems like the Lynx infantry fighting vehicle are being developed and produced, as well as in Szeged.

Furthermore, Rheinmetall announced in May 2022 that it would set up a joint venture with the 4iG Plc and the Hungarian state-owned company HM Electronics, Logistics and Property Management Plc (HM EI Zrt.) to drive forward the digitalisation of the Hungarian armed forces and selected NATO member states. Rheinmetall thus continues to expand its position in Hungary as a capable partner of the Hungarian armed forces. The core objective of the cooperation is to promote digitalisation of the Hungarian armed forces and other NATO countries in Central and Eastern Europe and to develop and supply the necessary digital equipment.

When it is complete, the factory in Várpalota will employ about 200 people. More workers will be needed as the plant grows.

“We need employees in our team with experience in production, quality assurance, purchasing, warehousing and logistics, plant maintenance and administration. We are also specifically looking for professionals who are trained and experienced in handling explosives and ammunition”, declares plant CEO Michael Krebs.

SKY-HERO and AARDVARK Announce Release of New Payloads and Accessories

Tuesday, January 17th, 2023

SKY-HERO and AARDVARK have expanded their Tactical Robotics Suite by adding three new accessories and payloads to the current system. A new Tactical Wrist Monitor system, Typhon distraction device payload, and LED/LASER payload have joined the versatile list of equipment in the SKY-HERO Tactical Robotics Suite.

SKY-HERO’s newest accessory, the Tactical Wrist Monitor, allows for the sharing of situational awareness by providing each team member with the ability to view the real-time video streams of up to four different LOKI and SIGYN systems. The monitor features a 2.7-inch, high-res display with individual channel buttons. Team members can switch between the live video feeds of deployed vehicles, even on scrambled channels, without regard for what the pilot is seeing or operating. With a 150-minute run time, wireless scrambled video, and NLOS 150m reception range, the Tactical Wrist Monitor broadens the use of the system’s multiple devices and provides situational awareness for the entire team.

The new Typhon Noise Flash Diversionary Device (NFDD) payload and SKY-HERO LED payloads — designed to provide deceptive diversions to enhance operator safety — have also been added to the Tactical Robotics Suite. These payloads are indispensable tools that facilitate safe entry into hostile environments and distract suspects. Each of these payloads features a plug-and-go design and can operate on both LOKI and SIGYN.

Built in conjunction with Typhon in the UK, the Noise Flash Diversionary Device (NFDD) payload acts as a non-lethal, multi-shot distraction system, capable of producing a 165dB report as either single shots or as a burst. The pilot and other operators can initiate this payload through the SKY-HERO GCS or with SKY-HERO’s new Remote Trigger system.

Built-in conjunction with top SKY-HERO users, the LED payload is a multi-function, selectable payload providing bright white light, colored LEDs, and a designating green laser in a single device. Designed to distract, temporarily disorient, and confuse suspects, the payload’s high-intensity front LEDs can be used as a solid source of bright white or as a disorienting high-intensity strobe. The programmable colored LEDs can be used as a distraction or to indicate the drone is law enforcement. The powerful green laser pointer can designate targets or get suspects’ attention.

The SKY-HERO Tactical Robotics Suite is the world’s most widely used tactical robotics system. It combines the power of the LOKI Mk2 tactical drone, the SIGYN Mk1 ground robot, and integrated payloads to operate from a single GCS. The Tactical Robotics Suite allows teams to scout unknown areas, reduce risk to operators and share situational awareness.

The Tactical Robotics Suite is built by SKY-HERO and sold exclusively in North America by AARDVARK.

Q30 Innovations Adds Vice Admiral Szymanski and Lieutenant General Mulholland to Military Board of Advisors

Tuesday, January 17th, 2023

WESTPORT, CT (January 16, 2023) – Q30 Innovations is pleased to announce the additions of Vice Admiral Tim Szymanski and Lieutenant General John Mulholland to its Board of Military Advisors. The company continues to see increased adoption of the Q-Collar throughout the military as more warfighters experience the benefits of the product designed and proven to reduce brain injury caused by repetitive subconcussive impacts.

By adding these two new members to its Board of Military Advisors, Q30 hopes to drive increased awareness for a broad range of military and law enforcement applications and continue to advance additional research around the product’s effectiveness in military-specific scenarios, including reducing brain injury caused by blast waves.

“As we continue to see adoption of the Q-Collar by military servicemen and women, Vice Admiral Szymanski and Lieutenant General Mulholland will provide valuable experience and firsthand military knowledge to our mission to help protect men and women who are at risk of traumatic brain injuries,” said Q30’s Co-CEO Tom Hoey. “We are proud and extremely honored to be supported by these decorated veterans who share our concern for the health and well-being of those who serve.”

Vice Admiral Tim Szymanski (Ret)

Vice Adm. Szymanski has served in a number of Navy and Joint Special Operations assignments as a Navy Special Warfare Officer (SEAL) for over 36 years. He most recently served as the Deputy Commander for United States Special Operations Command after previously serving as the Commander of Naval Special Warfare. In both roles he oversaw the manning, equipping and training, and employment of NSW and joint special operations forces.

In addition to his dedicated time in the service, he also led initiatives to improve human performance and protect brain health across special operations. Szymanski developed programs to enhance cognitive performance and established policies to monitor and protect brain health improving the welfare and operational readiness of all special operations forces and their families.

“Q30 has an innovative product that, in my opinion, from all of the clinical research, can potentially reduce the long term effects of impact and blast exposure. The potential to significantly improve the welfare of our service members pushed me to join the Q30 team,” said Szymanski.

Lieutenant General John Mulholland (Ret)

After joining the 1st Special Forces Regiment in 1983, LTG Mulholland (Ret) commanded from the captain through lieutenant general level in Army and joint special operations forces: including serving as Deputy Commanding General, Joint Special Operations Command, as the Commanding General, United States Army Special Operations Command, and as the 15th Deputy Commander, United States Special Operations Command. His professional background and involvement throughout his military career have driven him to make and influence changes to better prepare the force for future conflict, and to better protect the force today and for tomorrow.

“As I was already involved in assisting other lines of effort regarding the brain health of active-duty military members and veterans, and have two sons and a daughter actively serving in the Army, joining the Q30 team just made sense,” said Mulholland.

He will dedicate his time to educate the senior leaders within our Special Operations and large military communities about the ways Q30 is reducing the consequences of the kinetic, concussive impacts to the brain that’s frequently incurred by our men and women in uniform.

NIOA Group Announces Purchase of Barrett Firearms

Monday, January 16th, 2023

Australia’s NIOA Group has just announced the acquisition of Barrett Firearms. NIOA partnered with Barrett to provide anti-material rifles to the Australian Defence Force and in October of last year, NIOA named Barrett a key sub-contractor. Seen below is Sam Shallenberger (President, Barrett) and Rob Nioa (Group CEO, NIOA).

This signals the transition of founder Ronnie Barrett, a legend in the US small arms industry who developed a family of .50 anti-material rifles and other precision firearms including the US Mk22 Advanced Sniper Rifle.

Below is their press release.

NIOA acquires US manufacturer Barrett Firearms

Australian defence contractor NIOA has expanded its global reach with the 100 per cent acquisition of the industry-leading rifle design and manufacturing company, Barrett Firearms.

In announcing the deal, NIOA Group CEO Robert Nioa said the two family-owned companies came together out of a shared commitment to quality, innovation, loyalty, and mission.

NIOA Group CEO Robert Nioa has announced the company’s acquisition of US rifle maker Barrett Firearms.

“NIOA’s association with Barrett dates back to 2008. We have been inspired by the story of Barrett and admire what Ronnie, Chris and the family have built over more than four decades,” Mr Nioa said.

“It’s been a story of hard work, perseverance, and purpose culminating in the delivery of critical capability for the men and women of the US military and its allies around the world as well as exceptional products to law enforcement agencies and civilian markets.

“Together we share the same mission – combining our expertise and family business values will ensure Barrett carries on building the finest products in the world.’’

Mr Nioa confirmed the company would continue to operate under the Barrett brand as a separate division within the NIOA Group alongside NIOA Australia, NIOA New Zealand, the Australian Missile Corporation and the group’s investment in joint venture company Rheinmetall NIOA Munitions.

All management and staff at the Murfreesboro manufacturing facility in Tennessee have been retained and production will continue as normal. Over time it is expected that manufacturing activities in Murfreesboro will be further expanded.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Mr Nioa also announced two key leadership appointments – current Barrett President Sam Shallenberger has been promoted to the role of Chief Executive Officer while long-serving Barrett Chief Operating Officer Bryan James becomes President.

Ronnie and Chris Barrett will provide ongoing support as executive advisers to Barrett and the NIOA Group.

Barrett founder Ronnie Barrett said: “Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in the Barrett story. Rob and the NIOA team have great respect for the legacy Barrett has created as the leader in long range precision rifles. It’s reassuring to know Barrett will be in good hands with a family-owned company that is focussed on manufacturing and delivering world-class firearms and munitions to a global network.”

The Barrett acquisition marks an exciting next chapter for NIOA as the company’s entry to the US market where it has long-standing trusted relationships with American companies such as Vista Outdoors, Leupold, General Dynamics, Northrup Grumman, and the Winchester-operated Lake City ammunition plant.
