Bawidamann Blades  – Nuckeye Titanium EDC Bottle Opener

Wednesday, February 24th, 2016

This is a Ben Bawidamnn custom project that he finally made time for. It’s called the NUCK-EYE; a key chain/beer bottle opener with a little extra punch to it. Since they are Ohio boys, they thought that old number 17 would make a great addition to your nights out on the town. Someone’s point of view not lining up with your mid-western values? Use this handy tool to reset the conversation, then have a beer.

Each one is hand finished 6al4v Titanium in either quarter inch or half inch stock thickness, and every one is unique in color and finish.

SOG MacV Tool

Wednesday, February 17th, 2016

Yes, I realize the name looks backward, but it’s not. SOG Knives and Tools takes its name from the famed Military Assistance Command Viet Nam Studies and Observations Group. The new MacV tool also takes its name from the parent command.

Integrating 12 tools, the MacV is made from 3Cr13 stainless steel with a hard cased black coating. It is also TSA compliant.

Benchmade NSNs

Friday, January 29th, 2016

Often, I’m told by service members who read SSD, “yeah, that item is cool, by does it have a National Stock Number?” When I question them about this, I’m told that their supply office won’t buy the item, unless it has an NSN. Although, nothing could be more Cold War (and lazy) than that approach, I’ve been keeping my eye out for gear that has an NSN. For example, here is a chart from Benchmade that has NSNs.

As is usual, Benchmade had a great lineup of knives for the new year on display at SHOT Show. Here’s some of the highlights:

DSC07426

This is the Axis Stryker II. It’s a limited edition folding knife which features black and red carbon fiber, anodized red hardware accents, and a Damasteel Odin Heim blade. The blade length comes in at 3.57″, with a total length of 8.29″ and a weight of 4.76 oz.

The Nestucca Cleaver is based on the traditional Alaskan Ulu. It’s intended for use as a skinning and prep knife for big game. The blade is constructed of CPM-S30V steel, and the handle and finger hole provides users the option to utilize multiple hand positions. Additionally, the Nestucca Cleaver comes complete with a leather sheath.

The SOCP Rescue Tool is the rescue tool variant of the Greg Thompson SOCP Dagger. It features the Benchmade rescue hook design, a carbide glass breaker, oxygen wrench, and the finger loop and integral sheath as with the original SOCP dagger.

DSC07423

This is the Protagonist. It’s a fixed blade knife designed for use by Military and Law Enforcement. The blade is constructed of 154 CM stainless steel, while the handle is constructed of Grivory with black Versaflex over-mold with an olive drab accent. The sheath is black injection molded with a tension screw and MOLLE compatibility. Seen above is the Tanto-style blade; it also comes in a Drop Point blade.

SHOT Show – MoraKniv Garberg

Thursday, January 21st, 2016

Offered in two versions, one with a leather sheath and one with a multi mode sheath, the Garberg is MoraKniv’s first full tang knife.

The 109mm long blade is made from 14C 28N Sanvic steel paired with a single mold polyamide handle that is very shock resistant. That handle means there are no spacers. It weighs 9.6 oz.

The multi mode sheath has several components including the sheath itself, a cradle which allows the sheath to be attached to PALS, belts, or more permanent fixture such as to a boat or vehicle, as well as a frog and Velcro mounting straps.
