Check Out Our Tactical Balls

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

We’d like to welcome the Mad Duo themselves to the readers of Soldier Systems Daily. We have been following them for years on Breach-Bang-Clear and they will be stopping by occasionally to show you all a different point of view.

Brite-Strike Tactical Illumination Products has recently started showing off their balls, and not just their tactical balls but their IR/NVG balls as well! Now, we haven’t tried them out yet (hoping to get some soon to T&E) but we want to point out that they’re not, contrary to some of what we’ve heard, not intended to replace NFDDs (Noise Flash Diversionary Devices) like “flashbangs”. They are, however, intended to be a easily used, low cost distraction device that can be carried by patrol officers and deputies (or MPs, presumably) without specialized training. They are available in IR for military and LE tactical units.

Touted as small, lightweight, water- and shock-resistant, they “wobble and spin all around” when deployed by rolling or tossing them in a room, and will land light up to backlight your opponent or intruder. Presumably they may also provide a tactical or illumination edge in areas where a standard NFDD could not normally be deployed (like a clan-lab or potential sympathetic detonation environment), or perhaps as a signaling device. There’s a video of them being deployed here, though it probably doesn’t do them much justice. For ourselves, we’d rather see them made with a good strobe function like the Strategos Gladius, but we’re not ones to nay-say without trying something out.

The product bears the NTOA symbol of approval and is sold in lots of five (5). If we get some of ‘em to try out we will let you know most ricky-tick.

New SureFire CombatLights

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

SureFire has introduced two new CombatLights. The LED AZ2 and the Z2-S which is their first strobing flashlight. Due to its unique nature we will concentrate on the Z2-S.

The Z2-S’s LED generates 160 lumens of light, eight times the light output of a standard two-D-cell flashlight. Additionally, it also features a strobe mode programmed to blink at a specific frequency to effectively disorient an attacker, a feature that has been continuously requested by SureFire customers.

CombatLights feature tactical-level output (enough to overwhelm night-adapted vision), ergonomic tailcap switching, and SureFire’s patented CombatGrip—a stepped-down body and rubber grip ring that makes pairing the light with a firearm easier, as well as providing a secure hold in wet or cold conditions or while wearing gloves.

At five inches long and under five ounces in weight (with batteries), the Z2-S is designed to be portable and powerful. Press the tactical tailcap switch for momentary-on, press three times rapidly to activate the strobe, or twisting it for constant-on in either mode.

New Surefire Helmet Light Mount

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Based on a requirement from the Army’s 10th Mountain Division Surefire recently updated the mount for their popular helmet light. While it sill attaches along the lip of the helmet, the light no longer hangs below edge and can be mounted to the right or left side of the helmet. Additionally, the light can now be rotated along one axis so that the beam no longer has to remain on axis with the head. As we understand it, this is a line change and will be standard for lights in the future but as you can see the mount we looked at is a prototype. These will be available soon.

SOCOM Seeking New VBL III

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

SU-233 / PVS gun lightCurrently Insight Technology provides the SU-233 / PVS gun light which is more commonly known as the Visible Bright Light (VBL) III component of the Miniature Day / Night Sight in the Special Operations Peculiar Modification (SOPMOD) kit. Any new light will be judged against it and will have to show improved, cost, schedule, and performance. Please take note of the order of those words. The first two are what will get an acquisition professional in trouble, the last one is generally just icing on the cake.

Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane which is responsible for SOCOM weapon programs, recently released a solicitation for a new VBL III. Once selected, the awardee will be responsible for providing Crane with between 10 and 37,500 lights over the next five years in batches of less than 1000.

The list of requirements is extensive and very well written. It includes compatibility with Mil Std 1913 rails but I found it interesting that they were open to other attachment systems if the government could obtain rights to use the system on all of their accessories. Other requirements include waterproofing to 66 ft, and six operating modes which include full and reduced visible white light, infra-red, strobe, non-accidental discharge, and reduced glare modes.

One big issue is that the new light has to exhibit recoil shock endurance sufficient to allow use on all SOF small arms. Word on the street is that the current block II SOPMOD accessories have been having a rough time with the SCAR.

It also has to be compatible with a laundry list of weapons including naturally, the M4 and Mk16/Mk17 (SCAR-L/H) but also the AK 47 and AK 74, M14, and so on, as well as a few that had me scratching my head such as the M3 MAAWS (Carl Gustav) and M2 Heavy Machine Gun. You really need to look the solicitation up and read it. Some of these just don’t make sense for a small light like this. Pistols however, were not listed.

While Insight Technology has long been a favorite of the folks at Crane but Surefire seems to have built one heck of a competitor with their RAID M720 which seems to fit the bill quite nicely.
