“Soviet And Mujahideen Uniforms, Clothing And Equipment Of The Soviet-Afghan War, 1979-1989”

Saturday, February 11th, 2017

Published in 2016, “Soviet And Mujahideen Uniforms, Clothing And Equipment Of The Soviet-Afghan War, 1979-1989” by Zammis Schein catalogs the author’s extensive collection of wartime artifacts.

The 500-page volume contains every conceivable variant of Soviet uniform, including armor crew, aircrew, infantry and spetznaz as well as women’s ensembles.

Mujahideen clothing has also been catalogued. Much of it will be quite familiar to those who have served in Afghanistan. In fact, that’s where the author began his collection, while working as an interpreter.

The collection is certainly impressive and includes inert models of the infamous PFM-1 “Butterfly” landmine.

Additionally, the author has included pocket litter such as ID cards, letters and other ephemera.

The book has value as a reference document but I wish it had also featured the historical images depicting the equipment in use which were used by the author to validate the items.

Osprey Elite 216 – Vietnam War US & Allied Combat Equipments

Thursday, February 2nd, 2017

I own quite a library of reference books and some of my favorites are from Osprey Publishing. Last week they released Osprey Elite 216, “Vietnam War US & Allied Combat Equipments” by Gordon L Rottman and illustrated by Adam Hook. In my collection, I’ve got books going back to the 80s by Rottman and it’s great to see him still in the game.

Right off the bat, I’ll acknowledge that this selection isn’t the definitive work on the subject. This is mainly due to the format of the Elite Series. However, while there are several other in-depth works on Vietnam-era load Carriage out there, “Vietnam War US & Allied Combat Equipments” is a welcome addition to my library.

For one thing, it covers both US and Allied gear in one volume. In fact, they’ve packed a whole lot of information in these 64 pages. If you need a quick reference for mid-century load carrying gear (including specialist items), this is the one to get. They are all there; M1956, early-war M-1961 USMC Load Carriage, M-1967 (Army and USMC variants), LINCLOE, SF-specific items, and ANZAC Systems (’37 and ’44 pattern webbing) as well as indigenous systems used by RVN forces. What’s more, packs, shelters and sleep systems are also accounted for.

Additionally, the author and illustrator do a great job of offering multiple views of the equipment. Not only do they offer period photos of the items in use, but they supplement this with studio shots of artifacts for comparison. The icing on the cake is the series of excellent illustrations which bring the gear to life.

One thing I wish Osprey would do is offer up the artwork from their books as order on demand prints. They’d make great artwork for mancaves as well as going away gifts for military units.

Apocalypse Now: The Video Game On Kickstarter

Sunday, January 29th, 2017

Erebus LLC has set up a Kickstarter campaign for a video game adaption of Apocalypse Now. The dev team, which is composed of industry veterans who have developed for titles such as Fallout: New Vegas, Wasteland 2, and Far Cry will be lending their talents towards adapting Apocalypse Now into a psychological horror game with RPG elements, encouraging stealth and resource management over run-and-gun gameplay, and allowing the player to develop Captain Willard to suit their playstyle.

While it can certainly be a daunting task to try and adapt Apocalypse Now into a functioning, and more importantly enjoyable, video game, on paper, at least, it seems the dev team is taking a pretty decent attempt at adapting the property into an interactive media.

SSD Saturday Night At The Movies Presents “Go Tell The Spartans”

Sunday, December 18th, 2016

This movie should need no introduction for fans of Vietnam-genre war movies. Starring Burt Lancaster, “Go Tell The Spartans” is based on former war correspondent Daniel Ford’s novel “Incident at Muc Wa” about a Special Forces Detachment in the Central Highlands of Vietnam.
