Kitanica Jackets

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

Every once in awhile we like to show something kind of high end. Kitanica’s jackets aren’t military but have features found in many tactical clothing products. In fact, the company name is derived from the word Chitin (prounced Kai•tin), which is the structural component of insect exoskeletons.

Mythbusters fans will recognize the Kitanica brand, not necessarily by name but by sight. Host Adam Savage wore one of the coats that looks like a cross between a motor cycle jacket and a flight jacket out of a sci fi movie. In fact, Adam’s use of the jacket on the show led to the resurgence of the brand which had gone into hiatus while owner Beej Cronin pursued a career in teaching. Interest became so great that Beej started the company back up along with brother Chris and their cousin Len Riccio.

Patagonia Ultra Shorts

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

The Ultra Shorts are great if you are looking for a pair of shorts for deployment. They can serve as PT shorts as well as swim trunks and look fine with civilian shirts and flip flops. They are cut long (9″ inseam) and are made from 50D polyester ripstop with a wicking finish so they dry quickly. The Ultra Shorts feature two front pockets and two large back pockets; one with stitched compartments to keep energy gels secure. The shorts also have a zippered security pocket right below the waistband to hold a car key.

Sahale Snacks

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Without a doubt our favorite travel snacks at Soldier Systems Daily come from Sahale Snacks. The only disagreement comes with which flavor is favorite. All are nut-based and the key is the mixture of natural ingredients to form new fusion flavors often combining both sweet and salty sensations. While they all are great, the Sing Buri is a classic example. Combining cashews with peanuts, pineapples, and sesame seeds all dusted with chili evokes a taste of Thailand. Highly recommended.

Recently the Editor picked up a couple of new flavors while visiting the REI flagship store in Seattle. They are from the Glazed Nut line and include Honey Almond, Almond PB&J, and Pomegranate Cashews. Once again, various types of nuts are glazed and combined with other ingredients to enhance the flavor of the mix. We tried the Honey Almond and Pomegranate Cashews and they taste great. One thing with the Honey Almond, it needs more cranberries.

Sitka Gear

Sitka Gear

A combination of high tech fabrics and design features not found in other hunting brands garnered Sitka a “Field and Stream Best of the Best Award” for 2008. At SHOT Show they unveiled new designs.

What’s more, for 2009 they have integrated two innovative technologies into their product line; W.L. Gore’s Optifade Camo and Ardica’s Wearable Power and Heat.

One product that caught my eye is their softshell Celsius Vest. Unfortunately there don’t seem to be many options for decent tactical softshell vests but the Celsius looks like a good balance between simplicity and performance..

While commercial camo patterns might not fit your use, aside from the currently available Realtree AP and Mothwing Mountain Mimicry, they also offer most styles in solid colors and often at a lower price point than their camo offerings.

Off Duty: Vibram FiveFingers

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

We saw these at OR last summer and hadn’t really thought about them until recently. They are pretty cool and while they probably won’t have much of a direct application for most of us, they look like a great idea for something to throw on during the off-duty hours to let the dogs breathe. What sets the FiveFingers apart from similar footwear is their five toed “barefoot” design.

The photo above depicts the FiveFingers Flow which serve as an excellent water sock as the upper is 1.2mm Neoprene. Additional models include the Classic‘s minimalist design with an anti-microbial foot bed and abrasion-resistant stretch polyamide upper. Additionally, the KSO designed to “Keep Stuff Out” with its higher top and fore and aft closure. And last but not least is the Sprint, featuring a low top and secure fit.

They are available in a variety of colors depending on the model including camo.

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

We love camo at Soldier Systems Daily and we recently found out about a new pattern called Morning Wood, you read that right…Morning Wood. The thumbnail is small and we have to warn you that the women’s outlines are pretty curvaceous, so think before you open the link.
