Tactical Tailor – Raider Pack

Tuesday, April 12th, 2016

The Pacific Northwest Pack Series began as a project to fulfil a solicitation for a suite of SOCOM packs. Our designs for this solicitation were brought about with input from actual SOF soldiers who took these packs to the field throughout the design process and brought back their impressions and recommendations for improvements. We took their advice back to our designers who then continually refined the packs until they met the exacting standards of these elite soldiers.

The Raider pack was designed as an alpine style pack for long range while carrying lighter loads. The Raider stands out in the Pacific Northwest Pack series, as unlike the other packs in the series, it is built with its own internal frame, straps and hip belt with nothing else needed to be ready to go. With a 3100 cubic inch capacity and an empty weight of 5.2 pounds, it truly is a light weight, long range pack.

Just because we designed the Raider as a light weight pack, does not mean we scrimped on the details. This pack is loaded with all the features you would expect from a Tactical Tailor pack. Starting at the top, you’ll find a clamshell style zipper that will let you access the entire contents of your pack. No more digging through your entire pack to find that one missing item. You’ll also find left and right side zippered access to hydration, an RTO zipper pass through and an oversized pocket on both sides for rifle buttstocks, 84mm rounds or just about anything else you can think to strap to the side of this pack. Rounding out the details are a heavy duty carry handle, multiple MOLLE attachment points, integrated load lifters and side compression straps. The Raider is also STRLLS and H Harness compatible for airborne operations.

Tactical Tailor – Regiment Pack

Thursday, March 31st, 2016

The Pacific Northwest Pack Series began as a project to fulfil a solicitation for a suite of SOCOM packs. Our designs for this solicitation were brought about with input from actual SOF soldiers who took these packs to the field throughout the design process and brought back their impressions and recommendations for improvements. We took their advice back to our designers who then continually refined the packs until they met the exacting standards of these elite soldiers.

The Regiment pack is a larger rucksack, intended to carry heavy sustainment loads on patrol or reconnaissance. With a total capacity of over 5000 cubic inches, this bag is heavy duty, but at only 5.5 pounds, it is not heavy-weight. Our designers have worked hard to incorporate the most useful features you might need in a long range pack while not wasting your time with useless bells and whistles that only look good as bullet points.

All the standard features are here, like a reinforced carry handle, stainless drain holes on all the exterior pockets, RTO pass-through zipper and side compression straps. Beyond that, you will also find pass throughs on the side pockets for odd sized items like ski poles or shooting sticks, left and right side external zippers for cable or hydration pass through, separate zipper access to the main compartment, internal attachment points for our PRC-117G radio pouch, an air mesh map pocket inside the top flap and much more. The pack is also STRLLS and H harness compatible for airborne operations.

Along with this new line of packs, we’ve also introduced upgrades to our traditional straps and belt in the form of our Low Profile and Low Profile Adjustable Super Straps and Ergo Super Belt. These new designs add even more comfort along with added functionality and adjustability. The Regiment Pack is also available in a discounted kit form which includes the pack, our Fight Light MALICE Pack Frame, Low Profile Adjustable Super Straps and 34” Ergo Super Belt.

Hill People Gear – Connor Pocket / Pocket

Monday, March 21st, 2016

The Connor is the successor to HPG’s discontinued Highlander Pack. Although the Connor was designed as an add on pocket (their largest compression pocket, suitable for use on the Ute and larger packs), it can also be used as a stand alone pack when used with a harness.

Features:
-Large main dimensional pocket fully lined with First Spear’s 6/12 PALS cut velcro loop fabric lets you create whatever organizational system you want.
-Center zip outer pocket with stretchy tweave fabric on the outside expands as you stuff it.
-Twin outer mesh pockets on either side of the center zip. Meant for drying your socks on the trail. Sized to take a bike bottle size bottle.
-Hypalon compression wings can be folded underneath for use on the Ute pack or brought around to the front when the Connor is used stand alone. The wings have a 2 channel pals grid cut into them for additional pouches either inside or outside of the wings.
-Dual mini-wand pockets are just big enough to accept bike bottle sized bottle, but excel for smaller items like trekking or fishing poles.
-Generously long bottom compression straps.
-Stay pocket is accessible from the suspension side. Can be used to store other flat items if desired.
-Harness mounting points are midway up the back to allow for a wide range of torso lengths.
-Includes (2) ITW repair ladderloc buckles. In pack mode, they are used for the load lifters. In pocket mode, they can be used on the very bottom tabs to tie into the bottom most compression straps on the Ute pack.

Who Remembers the StrapMaster 2000?

Saturday, March 19th, 2016

Around 1999 SOCOM started issuing a pack system by Gregory/Bianchi, commercially called the UM21. It was affectionately known by many who used it, as the StrapMaster 2000 for the outrageously long Black 1″ webbing found all over the main pack. Usually issued in Woodland there were a limited number manufactured in 3-Color Desert camo, primarily for 5th Group.

UM21 Packmule

This photo of a burdened mule was taken very early in Operation Enduring Freedom during the so-called Horse Soldier operations. It remains my favorite photo of the UM-21 because one look at the mule’s face and you’ll see how everyone felt while carrying that beast. In fact, you won’t run across many photos of troops actually wearing the Main Pack. Although it did incorporate a few innovative features, the Main Pack was partially manufactured from rubberized fabric and was heavy even when empty. The Main Pack (with PALS compatible side pockets), Patrol Pack and Butt Pack along with 5 stuff sacks made up the system weighing 17 lbs all told.

um21

Although it was fielded as part of the Special Operations Forces Personal Equipment Advanced Requirements (SPEAR) program, it’s design and selection pre-dated the team that fielded such great items as the MICH, MLCS, PCU and SOF Handwear. In fact, it was developed before the Family of Packs was broken out as a separate program from Body Armor/Load Carrying System (BALCS). BALCS ALSO included body armor as well as an Enhanced Load Carrying System subsystems in addition to the UM21.

SOG_Bags[1]

Lynnwood, WA. – SOG® Specialty Knives and Tools has announced the release of their new line of SOG Packs. A family of six bags ranging in size from a daily sling pack to a full-sized duffel, the SOG Packs break the mold on conventional tactical bags; bringing a line that serve every user ready for outdoor adventures or daily carry.

Not only do the new SOG packs offer typical functions like hydration sleeves, MOLLE attachment points, and durable fabrics, but also premium features such as Hypalon MOLLE fields, Quad-Zip full access compartments, integrated long item carriers, and suspension systems. Contemporary use of tactical packs calls for the need of added comfort, versatility, and durability – SOG packs deliver on all these benefits and more, all while maintaining a sleek unassuming look.

The versatility of the packs offers something for everyone. For longer expeditions, the adaptable Seraphim 35L or Prophet 33L can house all your gear without sacrificing mobility and comfort. For outings shorter than that, the Scout 24L can handle anything for an overnight or day trip while the Ranger 12L makes a great companion for quick escapes.

Modern urban warriors will find that the TOC 20L or EVAC 18L sling can easily organize their daily carry. Whether heading out for a multi-day excursion or a quick morning errand, there is a SOG pack for your needs.

SERAPHIM 35L
The SOG Seraphim is designed to be the pack that does it all by carrying everything in its 35L main compartment. Equipped with shock cord tie downs, any additional equipment can be cinched to the outside of the bag, attached to the Hypalon MOLLE field, or strapped inside the fold-down panel. In addition, the unique integrated long item carry caters to the adventurer who’s travels require an axe, fishing rod, bow, or rifle. The combination of these external features, along with the pack’s internal organizing components, make it one of the best and versatile 35L packs on the market.

PROPHET 33L
For a pack, the SOG Prophet is one that is adaptable to any purpose. This 33L pack goes from backpack to duffle bag in a snap by stowing the quick-release shoulder straps and hip belt out of the way. Each side of the pack houses lash points for long item carry, compression flaps for keeping the weight of the pack closer to the carrier, and Hypalon MOLLE fields for more external attachment points for extra gear. Accessing the inside main compartment via the Quad-Zip means the once arduous process of finding gear from the bottom of the pack, now doesn’t require unpacking everything on top of it. This pack’s ease of use and functionality make it one of the most versatile packs available.

SCOUT 24L
The SOG Scout brings way more to the table than any other 24L pack in the game. The panel loading main compartment comes fully equipped with multiple interior pockets, a padded laptop sleeve, hydration carry and MOLLE loop field. Accessing the main compartment through the Quad-Zip allows for you to find your gear from the bottom of the pack without unpacking everything on top of it. Any extra gear can be cinched to the pack’s side compression straps, attached to the Hypalon MOLLE field, or held on by the Scout’s unique wire long item carry. The top molded panel allows quick access to smaller items, such as sunglasses or phones. Due to the suspension, a fully loaded pack can be carried comfortably whether going for two or twenty miles.

TOC 20L
The SOG TOC is the ultimate 20L daypack for the urban warrior or forest adventurer. Its light overall weight makes it easy to carry; and the quick- adjust shoulder straps, padded hip belt and rigid suspension keep it comfortable all day long. As the “Tactical Operating Center,” this pack houses plenty of options for storage and organization: the main compartment has multiple interior zippered pockets and small sleeves, the molded top contains a small organizing system for quick access items, two side access pockets live on the front of the pack, and a pass-through side access laptop compartment keeps your notebook safe. Whether you are hopping on the subway or jumping over creeks, the TOC makes a great companion for the modern user all day.

RANGER 12L
The SOG Ranger is no stranger to a trip scouting new trails or a day hike in the local mountains. It’s fast and light, and the quick-adjust shoulder straps, hip belt, and sheet suspension keep it comfortable all day. This pack houses plenty of options for storage and organization: the main compartment has an interior zippered pocket and a padded tablet sleeve, the molded top contains a small organizing system for quick access items, the front organizer pocket with more interior sleeves, and an hydration carry to keep you hydrated. Any extra gear can be cinched to the pack’s side compression straps or attached to the Hypalon MOLLE field. For quick excursions, this 12L pack carries everything you need.

EVAC SLING 18L
For short distance carry, mobility, and quick on-the-run access to all your gear, the SOG EVAC 18L sling pack is the go-to pack. Side pockets allows for easy entry to your laptop, with the main and secondary compartment providing access to all your gear without taking the pack off. Inside the main compartment lives an organization panel for smaller items that may otherwise get lost in the bottom of the pack. The molded top pocket and front organizer pockets gives you even more storage flexibility. This pack’s design allows for rapid deployment and maneuverability of your gear without slowing you down.

Available now through www.sogknives.com, the full line of packs were first introduced at SHOT 2016.

Tactical Tailor – Pacific Northwest Pack Series

Wednesday, March 16th, 2016

Tactical Tailor prepared a press release on their new line of Pacific Northwest Packs, which can be read below:

1

The PNW Pack Series has been kicking around in Tactical Tailor’s design shop for about 18 months.  Obviously Tactical Tailor geeks out over backpacks and we love the great Pacific North West.  We love the fit, form and function that a lot of the climbing/alpine packs offered in the mountains, but the problem that consistently surfaced was light weight packs only work well when you put light weight things in them.  A pack that works awesome for camping and climbing in the Cascades would fall apart as soon as you added 2 SAW drums, 100 rounds of 7.62 link, a mortar round and a few 5590 batteries.

We would often joke that the US Military got three things right, the smoking jacket, the poncho liner and the ALICE pack.   Unfortunately ever since, the US Military has been trying to get rid of them once they saw that they worked and the troops loved them;  well, as much as anyone can love a piece of GI equipment…

The Regiment-Front

Tactical Tailor staff travels the US about 30-40 weeks a year doing trade shows and visiting our nation’s war fighters.  The two things we hear consistently is that the ALICE/MALICE frame is king and that our supporters wish we would build a new pack since they can’t wear their old one out and need an excuse to buy a new one.

We started thinking about how we could combine our love of the MALICE pack with more updated outdoor design features that we loved and the PNW Pack Series was born.

Tahoma Tote-Front

In 2015, Larry Coffey, the owner of Tactical Tailor and the father of the late Tactical Tailor founder Logan Coffey, mentioned that he would love to have a team in the 2016 Bataan Memorial Death March.  As we all learned early in our military careers, a suggestion from the commander is really an order, so we wasted no time in starting our training.

As we were working through the design process we carried these packs up Mount Si, Tiger Mountain, Mount Rainer (aka Mount Tahoma) and along the Nisqually River with military weight loads.  We post holed in the snow, trekked through frozen fog and walked in white out conditions. The mountains wasted no time in telling us what we got right and what we got painfully wrong.  We’d hit the design table, make some changes and hit the mountains again the next weekend.  Some of the great new features that resulted from these experiences are an adjustable suspension system with load lifters, low profile super straps, outward cinching super belts, compression straps and exterior access zips. Plus, if you like the look of these new straps and belts, they will be available for sale separately too.

The Nisqually-Front

Tactical Tailor is looking forward to walking our packs in the Bataan memorial Death March on March 20 at White Sands, NM and they will be available for customers to order that same day. It’s been an amazing journey back to our roots rucking our own designs and we look forward to sharing them with everyone that has supported us over the years.  We hope to see everyone at White Sands or whatever post, camp or base we land at after that. Of course, if you’re ever at Fort Lewis, come see us, we have a Starbucks machine!

Got questions or need to get your hands on one of these awesome new packs? Look us up on the web at www.tacticaltailor.com, drop us a line at customerservice@tactcialtailor.com or give us a shout 253-984-7854.

Frog.Pro – Easy Access Backpack

Tuesday, March 15th, 2016

I saw the Easy Access Backpack from Italian firm Frog.Pro earlier this month at Enforce Tac in Germany.  It was so new that the designer had just sewn up the first sample right before the show.

It has an interesting four zip configuration with all four zippers terminating at the top of the pack which is covered with a flap.

It can be pulled up over the head and when the flap is pulled the pack’s contents are easily accessible.

There’s plenty of room in the pack for patrol essentials. It also includes may slots with bungees.
