US Army Developing Parachutist Rucksack

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2015

Meet the MOLLE 4000. Developed by Natick Soldier Systems Center to satisfy a requirement for an airborne rucksack for the 82nd Airborne Division, it enters safety certification next month. Lead developer Rich Landry is a Veteran of the 82nd and has been instrumental in work on several airborne items over the years.

To create the MOLLE 4000, Landry combined the short MOLLE frame adopted by the Marine Corps but originally developed for Army paratroopers and created a new 4000 cu in bag for it. He also envisioned a new, removable single point release. This was the critical piece. Until now, you either rigged your pack with the Harness, Single Point Release, which is a separate item, prone to loss after a jump or you carried a pack with sewn-in air items. The latter option results in increased cost per pack and you are stuck lugging around the extra weigh whether you are jumping or not. Additionally, such specialty packs aren’t appropriate for issue to other forces due to that additional cost and weight. Instead, Landry has come up with a hybrid solution which quickly attaches and detaches from the pack. This saves both rigging time and weight, once he gets on the ground, for the paratrooper.

Bob Reinert of the Natick Public Affairs Office wrote a great story on the project. It’s definitely worth a read. www.army.mil/article/141297.

Wild Things – Guide Light Pack

Friday, January 30th, 2015

Yesterday, I had the chance to sit in with the ADS Inc Army team for some new product training at Academi in Moyock, NC. One of the vendors was Wild Things Tactical and they introduced a new top loader called the Guide Light. It weighs just 17 oz.

(null)

It’s a minimalist pack (26 l) made from waterproof material (200 psi) normally used as sail cloth and with bound seams to keep them as waterproof as possible without full seam sealing. There is very limited daisy chain along the back of the pack but overall it is a very slick design.

(null)

This frameless model incorporates a padded, internal sheet. There are padded shoulder straps but no waist belt. Additionally, there is a central haul loop located at the top of the pack, between the shoulder straps. The single compartment top loader has a spindrift and drawstring. The bag also features a pass through for Comms cables or hydration although there are no internal pockets.

The removable lip is held in place via SR buckles and a thin Velcro strip. The lid compartment opens via a half moon zipper and there is a small zippered pocket on the underside.

Berry compliant and available in Coyote and Black.

Available for unit and agency purchase via ADS.

SHOT Show – Outdoor Research

Wednesday, January 28th, 2015

For some time now, Outdoor Research has been teasing me with news that they were going to bring some of their most popular clothing styles over to the military line with Coyote color. What they unveiled at SHOT Show were several models including this Foray Jacket in Coyote and Black.

(null)

Made from GORE-TEX PACLITE, a two layer laminate with a 50D poly shell. In addition to the flapped front zip it incorporates OR’s TorsoFlo hem-to-bicep zippers for venting. There are two handwarmer pockets (the left doubles as stuff sack) and a single Napoleon pocket on the chest.

(null)

OR also introduced the Drycomp Summit Sack in Coyote as well. I LOVE this bag and have been Jonesing for one in an earth tone for some time. It is made from a lightweight 70D nylon and incorporates a roll top closure as well as daisy chain and ice axe loop. At either side are mesh pockets and compression straps to help manage the load. Padded mesh shoulder straps make this a great summit pack or for use on recces.

Sneak Peek – Grey Ghost Gear $10,000 Pack

Thursday, January 22nd, 2015

IMG_1419.JPG

I looked at this pack and said, “Tell me about this $10,000 pack here.” After Linsey Lea gave me a dirty look, she told me that its made from Waxed Canvas, which will become distressed as you wear it, adding character. The look will blend in to many an environment.
IMG_1420.JPG

Based on the Removable Operator Pack, it’s a cool design with a neato laser engraved leather label. I don’t think this pack will actually cost you $10,000 but you’ll look like you’re worth it when you wear it about town.

Both Tactical Tailor and Grey Ghost Gear have a whole slew of new products coming.
