Pandemic Delay Provides Extra Practice Time for USA Shooting Shotgun Teams

Monday, June 21st, 2021

ANOKA, Minnesota – June 16, 2021 – As the 2021 Olympic Games approach, USA Shooting team members Kayle Browning, Brian Burrows, Vincent Hancock, Austen Smith, and Derrick Mein are intently focused on preparing to finally compete on the world stage after a year-long delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The postponement was a shock for all Olympic athletes, but from difficulty comes opportunity, and the team has made the most of the extra time by putting a whole lot of rounds through their shotguns during the past year’s delay.

“These athletes compete at the highest level, they are extremely accomplished and worked hard to compete for their country in front of the entire world,” stated Jason Vanderbrink, President of Federal Ammunition. “As a company that sponsors the USA Shooting team, we can’t wait to watch them compete, and for Federal Ammunition to be part of them accomplishing their goals of bringing home Olympic medals.”

“Preparing for Tokyo has been difficult to say, at the very least,” said Vincent Hancock, a skeet shooter who took gold medals in the 2008 and 2012 games. “After the delay and some time off, I’ve maintained my training at a high level for the past four to five months now, working diligently to make sure I reach my peak at just the right time and that I’m ready for the tests of competition.”

“I have been firing a lot of Federal Gold Medals to get ready for the Olympics. I fully expect to put forth my best effort at this year’s Olympic Games, and for me, that means eliminating mistakes,” said Derrick Mein, who took full advantage of the extra time he’s had to prepare and recently won the Super Sporting event at the NSCA’s U.S. Open last weekend while competing at Claythorne Lodge in Kansas. “The extra year has given me a great opportunity to fine tune my game.”

“It has been a very unique situation. At first, I was really bummed out, like a lot of other athletes,” Kayle Browning said. “But once the shock of the games getting postponed wore off, I quickly realized I’d been given a great training opportunity. I began taking full advantage of the training facility that’s literally in my back yard.”

“I’m ecstatic for the Olympic Games this July! This will be the first games I will compete in, and it will be the completion of four years of intense training and sacrifices,” said Austen Smith. “The delay was heartbreaking at first, but I found a way to convert that heartbreak into determination. Throughout the lockdowns and competition cancellations I dedicated myself to training in any way possible.”

Brian Burrows said the delay definitely changed how he expected to prepare for the games.

“Typically, we would have shot three or four World Cups plus a test event on the Olympic range, but this time we had one world cup and no test event. So, I have had to adapt and adjust how I prepare for the Olympics, but I am confident in my training, and it has paid off,” Burrows said. “In the one world cup we shot, I entered the final in second place with a very strong qualification score. So, even though I had to adapt my training to the delay, I feel very confident.”

Team Federal’s Tim Herron Having Successful Season, Wins Major USPSA Match

Sunday, June 13th, 2021

ANOKA, Minnesota – June 8, 2021 –  With shooting competitions for 2021 having gotten nearly back to normal after a year-long hiatus, Team Federal shooter Tim Herron has had a fantastic year so far in Single Stack division. He recently claimed a major win when he grabbed the top spot at the USPSA Northern Arizona Classic, held in Prescott, Arizona, with a lead of more than 17 percentage points.

“Tim is one of those shooters who has a legitimate chance to win any match he enters,” said Federal Shooting Sports Promotions Manager Jason Spradling. “The Northern Arizona Classic is a major USPSA match and always has a stacked field of competitors. To beat the rest of the shooters in his division by nearly 18 percent is a huge accomplishment. We’re proud to celebrate this win with Tim.”

“The stages at Northern Arizona Classic were spectacular with many options and multiple ways to execute your stage plans,” Herron said. “Shooting an 8-round 1911 on many of these courses of fire really challenged many in Single Stack division and we had to figure out how to efficiently shoot the stages.”

In Arizona, Herron was running a Nighthawk Custom 1911 loaded with 230-grain .45 ACP Federal American Eagle FMJ ammunition.

“In a major competition like this one, you can literally lose the match with just one gun malfunction,” Spradling said. “Your equipment, including your ammo, has to run without fail every time. Tim knows he can depend on Federal ammo to get the job done and we’re always honored to have such a fierce competitor showing the community how well our products perform.”

“I want to give a heartfelt thank you to Federal Ammunition for their continued support of my efforts, both in competition, and in my profession as a firearms instructor and educator,” Herron said.

Earlier in the season, Herron took 10th place overall in Single Stack division at the 2021 USPSA LoCap Nationals in Talladega, Alabama. For that match, his pistol was loaded with 220-grain .45 ACP Federal American Eagle Syntech ammunition.

“Talladega was my first match of the season and I feel good about the finish I had. It was significant and also solidifies my place to compete in the ‘Super Squad’ again next year,” Herron said.

Buck Holly Tops Gas Gun Category in Federal King of Coal Canyon PRS Match

Tuesday, June 1st, 2021

ANOKA, Minnesota – June 1, 2021 – Team Federal Precision Rifle Series shooter Buck Holly finished strong in the recent Federal King of Coal Canyon PRS Match. He took home the top trophy in the Gas Gun category, using Federal 105-grain Berger Hybrid 6mm Creedmoor ammo to cut through some stormy conditions on the range. The competition is a new match for 2021 sponsored by Federal and held at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, New Mexico.

“Federal is excited to have been the title sponsor of an additional national-level PRS match this year,” said Federal Shooting Sports Promotions Manager Jason Spradling. “The NRA Whittington Center staff were excellent hosts and their facilities were nothing short of epic. Match Director, Derek Love, and his staff did a fantastic job creating a challenging course of fire and improvising when extreme weather threatened the match.”

The stacked field of 120 shooters competed in 20 stages through windy and raining conditions that resulted in a flash flood on the range. Holly took the winning spot in the Top Gas Gun Division.

“With the conditions we faced and a challenging course of fire, it was nice to know I could count on my ammo to perform consistently,” Holly said. “That Gold Medal 6mm Creedmoor shoots really good in the wind.”

“Buck battled hard this weekend to pull out the Top Gas Gun title,” Spradling said. “We faced some really tough conditions on the range, but he shot consistently and never gave up. I’m proud to see him holding another trophy.”

Holly hails from Richmond Hill, Georgia and is a small business owner in the firearms industry, and an avid hunter and outdoorsman, in addition to being a sponsored PRS shooter and instructor.

Safariland CADRE Member Julie Golob Wins First Place at Flagler Cup

Tuesday, June 1st, 2021

Safariland’s CADRE is off to a winning start.

Jacksonville, Florida – Safariland®, a brand of The Safariland Group, a leading global provider of safety products designed for the public safety, military, professional and outdoor markets, today announced that Safariland CADRE member Julie Golob won First Place in the women’s division at the Flagler Cup, an NRA Action Pistol regional match held at the Pioneer Gun Club in Bates City, MO.

“It’s so great to be back on the shooting circuit after my last match in 2019,” Golob said. “Pioneer Gun Club has an incredible Action Pistol facility, and this match serves as an excellent warm up for the Bianchi Cup. I love the back-to-back format of being able to compete in a regional event right before the nationals.”

The Flager Cup is an Action Pistol match held annually, the weekend before the NRA Bianchi Cup, and draws top competitors including members of the US Army Marksmanship Unit, Department of Homeland Security, US Border Patrol, industry teams and professional shooters.

With a perfect score of a 1920, 192x, the match features four, 48 shot events — Barricade, Plates, Practical and Moving Target. Competitors engage targets as close as 10 yards and as far as 50 yards, all with a handgun. To clinch the win Golob dropped just one 8 in the Moving Target event, shotting from the 10, 15, 20 and 25 yard lines.

“The Mover is such a challenging event. It’s also one of my favorites,” she added. “With a target moving across the range at 10 feet per second, your trigger control needs to sync perfectly with tracking the target. I was extremely pleased to have just one shot outside the 10-ring.”

Golob competed in the Open Division with her Smith & Wesson 9mm 1911, Trijicon MRO, Safariland ELS Belt with Model 014 holster and 776 pouch with Federal Premium ammunition components and Caldwell, Tipton and Wheeler gear. She finished the match with a score of 1906, 153x.

Gould Brothers Break World Record

Sunday, May 30th, 2021

ANOKA, Minnesota – May 27, 2021 – There is a new distance record for breaking a clay target with a shotgun load following an epic day at a rural Minnesota farm. Federal Ammunition sponsored shooters Steve and Aaron Gould, who make up the popular Gould Brothers exhibition team, broke their own record not once but twice outside Osakis, Minnesota on a cold and windy day this spring.

“We are always trying to push the limits of what is possible, and we knew that Federal’s TSS would be the round to make it possible to break a clay pigeon at further distances than we had in the past,” exclaimed Steve Gould.

The previous record was 160 yards set several years back by the duo of brothers. Now with Federal, and having the world’s leading shotshell manufacturer backing them, a new record was ready to be set. The Gould Brothers teamed up with Federal’s Adam Moser, lead shotshell engineer, to better understand the capabilities of Heavyweight TSS in both 7 and 9 shot sizes at extreme ranges.

“The #7 TSS has a significant advantage at 170 yards over the #5 lead at 160 yards. Three times the pellet energy and 100+ more pellets in the payload,” stated Moser, when explaining the differences between Heavyweight TSS and the previously lead load used to set the record.

Having that knowledge, Steve and Aaron Gould attempted the 170-yard shot and Aaron was able to break the record only to be bested minutes later by brother Steve who successfully broke a clay target with Heavyweight TSS #7 at 180 yards!

“We knew we could break the record; we just didn’t know by how much. To pull the trigger of a shotgun and see a clay break at 180 yards, that is pretty cool,” stated Aaron Gould.

“Pulling off incredible shots requires the best performing ammunition and what an exciting accomplishment to witness with one of our category leading products,” stated Jason Nash, Federal’s Vice President of Marketing. “What is even more amazing, is the technology they used to capture the historic event, so fans of the Gould Brothers, Federal, and shooting in general can watch history play out.”
