Passing of a Legend: Saying Goodbye to Doc Dater

Sunday, February 2nd, 2025

The firearms industry lost a true legend on Wednesday, January 22nd, with the passing of Doctor Phil Dater. You may not know his name or his history. But if you know anything at all about suppressors, you definitely know his legacy.

I had the privilege to work for Phil at Gemtech for almost a decade, and I can truly say he will be missed.

Dr. Phil Dater: Goodbye to a Suppression Pioneer

by Patti Miller

Doc Dater started with suppressors in the late 1950s, and as he used to love to recount in stories over the years, he created suppressors in the machine shop in the basement of a hospital where he worked. He tinkered over the years and officially started AWC in New Mexico, where he registered his designs and started production models for sale. He would later leave New Mexico for the Boise, Idaho area.

There, in the early 1990s, he created Gemtech.

For the next three decades, Phil would continue to build the company with his business partners, colleagues, and employees. Many of his designs from the early days through his time at Gemtech would be copied by competitors or used as the basis for the next generation of suppressors in the industry as we know it today. In addition to Gemtech, he would dedicate time and effort to share his vast knowledge base with others in the industry through seminars, writings, and mentoring others in the suppressor industry. That’s just a brief description of what he accomplished – his life was much more than that.

Anyone who knew Phil knew how passionate he was. He held strong beliefs about many things, including suppressors and sound suppression. At times, this would cause some heated debates regarding techniques or applications. But in the end, Phil really cared about the science and, more importantly, the people. While not always patient, he was usually ready and willing to help you learn.

I’m not going to lie and say that we always got along perfectly. I can honestly say there were many times we didn’t, but he never treated me any differently. He would go out of his way for those he cared about, and if you were one of the lucky ones he cared about, his generosity would know no bounds. He would strive to do what was right for those around him, and he was a man of his word. Phil went out of his way to take care of me as an employee at different times, and for that I’m extremely grateful. It was a testament to his overall caring and generous nature.

All I can say is that if you’re currently enjoying shooting suppressed, you need to thank Doc Dater. He will be very much missed, and the industry wouldn’t have been the same without him.

So, here’s the legend: may he rest in peace.

American Suppressor Association Issues Statement of Support for Hearing Protection Act Reintroduction

Saturday, January 18th, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the American Suppressor Association (ASA), issued a statement of support for the introduction of the Hearing Protection Act for the 119th Congress by U.S. Representative Ben Cline.

“The Hearing Protection Act is the epitome of commonsense legislation. Law-abiding citizens should not have to pay a tax to protect their hearing when they exercise their Second Amendment rights,” said Knox Williams, President and Executive Director of ASA. “The American Suppressor Association applauds Rep. Cline for his leadership and willingness to fight for the rights of gunowners across the United States. We look forward to continuing productive conversations with members of Congress and the incoming administration to ensure the best policy outcomes for the suppressor industry and entire gun-owning community.”

The Hearing Protection Act would remove suppressors from the burdensome requirements of the National Firearms Act (NFA) and require purchasers to pass an instant NICS check, the same background check used during the sale of long guns. This change will make it is easier for law-abiding hunters and sportsmen to access these hearing safety devices. Congressman Cline’s bill is an enhanced version of the HPA introduced in every Congress for the last decade. The legislation includes a technical change intended to clarify which part of a suppressor must be marked with a serial number.

Background

Suppressors have been federally regulated since the passage of the National Firearms Act of 1934.

In order to purchase a suppressor, prospective buyers must live in a state where suppressors are legal, send in an application including fingerprints and passport photos to the ATF, pay a $200 transfer tax, notify their local Chief Law Enforcement Officer (CLEO), and wait an indeterminate amount of time for ATF to process the application.

Using the same science as car mufflers, suppressors help reduce noise pollution, allowing hunters and recreational shooters to be good neighbors and good stewards of the environment.

Often referred to as “silencers,” suppressors are widely misunderstood by the public due to this misnomer. A suppressor only reduces the sound level of a gunshot to 110-120 decibels, about as loud as a jackhammer or ambulance siren.

Private suppressor ownership is currently legal in 42 states, and hunting with a suppressor is legal in 41 states.

KGM Suppressors Unveils the FDP Suppressor with Fast Attach, Modular Design

Friday, January 17th, 2025

January 17, 2025 – KGM Suppressors is proud to announce the official release of the highly anticipated FDP Suppressor model by FD Suppressors. Following a groundbreaking partnership revealed in 2024, the FDP Suppressor is set to enter production in Q1 2025, with shipments beginning in April 2025. This innovative product is a unique and capable suppressor that does not require a threaded barrel on a pistol host, instead attaching via a patented method that uses the accessory rails incorporated into a pistol’s frame.

As a part of US commercialization, the FDP Suppressor has a newly redesigned and modular mounting interface, specifically engineered to meet U.S. regulatory standards. This design allows users to have multiple unregulated adapters, enabling seamless compatibility with different host platforms. This updated design of the FDP Suppressor has been reviewed by the BATFE Firearms and Ammunition Technology Division (FATD), with approval received in December 2024.

MSRP for the FDP Suppressors is $750, with additional adapters available for an MSRP of $165.

Launch Configurations

The initial release of the FDP Suppressor includes adapters for the following host platforms:

• Glock 19 Gen 3/4

• HK VP9

Key Design Features

• Fast attach and removal design that does not require a threaded barrel.

• Does not require a Nielson device/booster for cycling.

• Does not affect cycling and reliability of the pistol, allowing maximum ammunition compatibility.

• Has minimal to no point-of-impact shift between suppressed and unsuppressed.

• Does not interfere with the vision of pistol sights.

• Offers comparable sound suppression to conventional pistol suppressors.

• Easy take-apart design for cleaning.

“The FDP Suppressor model is a uniquely capable suppressor that we are excited to bring to the US market,” said Sean Murphy, VP of Product Management. “After we signed the partnership with Fischer Development to bring their design to the US, we found a few design changes needed to meet US regulations. We are excited to have an approved modular mounting system so that users can customize their suppressor setup to fit their preferred host. Work is already underway for additional adapters that fit other popular pistol platforms.”

Availability and Ordering

The FDP Suppressor and its launch adapters will be available for pre-order starting February 2025, with shipments commencing in April 2025.
