Monday, May 23rd, 2016

Edgar Brothers has been awarded a contract by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) to provide over 8,000 units and spares, of the Savage .22LR bolt-action rifle. The L144 A1 rifle will be used to teach cadets the fundamentals of weapons handling, safety, and the principles of target shooting.

Edgar Brothers’ Director of Police & Military Division, Mike Newman, commented that this announcement is a landmark achievement for the Macclesfield-based distributor: “The most satisfying element of winning this programme is knowing we are playing our part in the development of the Community Cadet Forces’ target shooting skills,” he said, adding: “Over the last 12 months our team, along with Savage Arms, have worked to develop a system to fit the requirement put to industry, by UK MOD, and we are extremely proud to have been selected as the winning bidder. It is very special to become part of a long dated history of in-service Cadet weapons, and we are extremely proud that the Savage ‘Cadet Small Bore Target Rifle’ now joins this list.”

Terry McCullough, Vice President and General Manager of Savage Arms Canada, added: “We were very confident going into the evaluation that our rifles’ performance would exceed the outlined requirements. The team here at Savage Arms Canada is indeed very proud to have been selected as the winning submission.”

NRA – Barrel Blok

Sunday, May 22nd, 2016

Barrel Blok is a firearms safety device, designed to allow the use of standard firearms in close quarter training situations such as grappling and arrest procedures. It is inserted into the chamber and out through the barrel and completely blocks the chamber. Additionally, there is a cap for the magazine so that no rounds can be inserted.

Although the Barrel Blok comes in a long length, the plastic, flexible rod construction is intended to extend 1/2″ past the end of the barrel once fully seated in the chamber. The user clips the end of the Barrel Blok based on the firearm it is used with. This length allows it to be used with most any holster. The high visibility orange color also makes it easy to verify by instructors as well as other trainees that the barrel is blocked.

Additionally, the device has other features that facilitate realistic training.  It is designed to engage the pistol’s extractor so the slide must be sufficiently racked and the material works as a firing pin strike face.

They’ve also just launched a version for rifles.

The design is the same, it’s longer to accommodate the increased barrel length, although, it’s important to mention that Barrel Bloks are not one-size-fits-all. Rather, they are offered in different calibers do that you get a sealed chamber.  In the image below, the Barrel Blok is not seated completely.

H&K Debuts SP5K at NRA Annual Meeting

Thursday, May 19th, 2016

The NRA’s Annual Meeting kicks off tomorrow morning in Louisville, Kentucky, and along with it, H&K brings a semi-auto version of the iconic MP5K to the American Market.

Dubbed the SP5K, you’ll notice a few changes from the original. For example, there’s a button-style mag release which was used so that full auto trigger packs can’t be easily installed. Also, the top incorprates a Picatinny rail and it has the old SP89-style handguard.

Here is their press release:

Heckler & Koch is introducing the new SP5K pistol at the 2016 NRA Annual Meeting and Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky. A semi-automatic pistol based on the MP5K, the all-new 9 mm SP5K was developed by Heckler & Koch as a sporting pistol that matches the look and feel of the famous submachine gun.

Designed and manufactured as a civilian pistol, the SP5K marks the return of the roller delayed blowback operating system to an HK commercial product. This system is well-known for its accuracy and reliability. Originally developed on the G3 rifle, it has been used on many of Heckler & Koch’s most memorable firearms of the last 60 years.

“The SP5K is a unique and historic HK pistol that captures the essence of the legendary MP5K but as a semi-auto handgun,”said Michael Holley, HK-USA Vice President for Commercial Sales and Marketing. “It’s equipped with a special ergonomic handguard that protects the shooter’s supporting hand and enables a stable and comfortable grip. A bungee cord sling is also included and makes shooting an SP5K easy. It’s a fun gun to shoot and goes a long way in recreating the experience of handling and firing a real MP5 subgun.”

The SP5K duplicates the quality and fine details of the MP5, including its precision machined components. The same cold-hammer forged barrel used on the MP5K is found on the SP5K, ensuring a service life of tens of thousands of rounds. The SP5K is manufactured completely in Heckler & Koch’s Oberndorf factory in southwest Germany.

As a large size handgun that uses the proven roller delayed blowback system, the SP5K’s inherent accuracy makes it an excellent choice for target shooting and an ideal household security arm.

A wide variety of accessories can be added to increase its functionality. A Picatinny rail scope mount is attached to the upper receiver and allows optional sights to be easily mounted. The SP5K also comes “ready-for-action”in a custom-fitted, lockable, high-quality carrying case.

Covered by Heckler & Koch’s limited lifetime warranty, the HK SP5K is a faithful rendering of the iconic MP5K as a semi-automatic pistol. Projected availability is July 2016 with a MSRP of $2699.

Be sure to visit booth #3215 to see the SP-5K along with the new Flat Dark Earth (FDE) VPs models in 9mm and .40 S&W.

Falcon 37 – HABU Mod 1 Advanced Engagement Charging Handle

    Tuesday, May 17th, 2016

The HABU Mod 1 from Falcon 37 integrates a cheek riser into an AR charging handle. The concept was to make the charging handle more easier to use. The additional benefit is that it offers about half an inch of riser which will help out with cheek weld. The Mod 1 is designed for 5.56 weapons and a planned Mod 2 will work with 7.62 ARs.

Above you can see the HABU extended. Just like a standard charging handle, it returns to the forward position, under spring tension from the action spring against the bolt. It stays in place thanks to a new latch which doesn’t require a release lever. If the shooter needs to take immediate action, it is similar to racking the slide of a pistol with the nonfiring hand.

The HABU is designed to fit any stock and is manufactured by Bill Rogers exclusively for Falcon 37 from 7075 T6 Aircraft Aluminum and MilSpec Hard Coat Anodized. The cheek rest portion consists of 80/18 glass polymer.

I understand it will be available this week through Bravo Company.
