IWA – H&K Releases New Firearms

Saturday, March 5th, 2016

Heckler & Koch unveiled several new German-legal semiautomatic firearms at IWA. These are some of the coolest guns you can’t have in the US.

The release included a civilian variant of the MP-5, referred to as the SP5. Versions included a Picatinny rail as well as a fixed stock.

There was also an USC model of the UMP in .45.

Additionally, H&K displayed a G-36 version called the HK243 S SAR which comes with a folding stock. Available in Black as well as RAL8000 (Tan), they’ve also introduced a STANAG Magwell for the semi-auto rifle. The HK243 S TAR for Tactical Automatic Rifle offers a foldable and retractable stock as well as a slim line hand guard. Both models incorporate a Picatinny sight rail but the HK 243 S TAR’s slim line hand guard features a STANAG 4949 rail at the top and MIL-STD 1913 rail at the bottom as well as HKey slots. The S TAR modifications are also offered as a retrofit kit.

Finally, they had the MR223 A3 in 11″, 14.5″ and 16.5″ lengths.

Available in both Black as well as RAL8000, they feature the most modern upgrades to the HK416 including NATO STANAG 4179 (draft) Magwell, Ambidextrous Bolt Catch and Slimeline Handguard with HKey slots and STANAG 4949 rail at the top and MIL-STD 1913 rail at the bottom.

IWA – Sport Systeme Dittrich’s SG-11, a Modernized FG-42

Friday, March 4th, 2016

This is a pretty cool item I ran across here at IWA, spying it out of the corner of my eye as I walked through the aisles. My brain screamed “FG-42” but something wasn’t quite right. I stopped and asked the man at the booth what it was and sure enough, he told me it was a modernized FG-42. Turns out, the guy I was talking to was Bernd Dittrich and it was his company. Aesthetically the rifle is different, but it retains the same operating system as well as a few classic design cues. The name is different as well, being referred to as a Sturm Gewehr rather than a Fallschirmjäger Gewehr.

Chambered in .308 rather than the original 7.92x57mm, the rifle is offered in two length, SG-11 (320mm barrel) and SG-12 (500mm barrel). You’ll notice there added a full length Picatinny rail above the barrel as well as a section below the barrel.

As you can see, it utilizes the original-style magazine which Sport Systeme Dittrich manufactures.

The SG-11 utilizes a folding charging handle but unfortunately, it’s on the right side of the gun, making the manual of arms a bit awkward. I do like that they incorporated an AR-style grip, but I’m not a fan of the CAA model they included kn the display guns. While the stock is inspired by the original sillhouette of the FG-42, accommodation for an AR-style stock would be interesting.

Additionally, they offer an SG-13 which is chambered for the 7.62x54R cartridge. They also manufacture working reproduction firearms. A sampling is seen below. Unfortunately, these are not yet available in the US but Herr Dittrich told me he has been scouting factory locations.

GIBBZ Arms Modular Attachment (GAMA) Goes After Magpul’s M-Lok Patent

Tuesday, March 1st, 2016

During SHOT Show there were murmurs about a looming patent confrontation between Gibbz Arms and Magpul. It seems that Gibbz Arms had developed an accessory attachment system for firearms that they were about to release under the name of GAMA, for GIBBZ Arms Modular Attachment. Below are the components of GAMA.

Granted, Gibbz hasn’t publicly used the word ‘Magpul’ but the primary similar design to what we see here is M-Lok. There is also the Manticore Arms ARC LOK system so perhaps Gibbz Arms is going after them as well.  But regardless, Magpul M-LOK has been mentioned to me more than once in connection with this move by Gibbz Arms.

Yesterday, Gibbz not only formally announced the product, but we are told they also started sending out notices to licensees of Magpul’s M-Lok attachment system. Below is an example. No word yet on whether they’ve contacted Magpul or Manticore Arms directly as well.

Gibbz is looking for its own licensees and at this point, we don’t know what the terms of that license looks like. However, we do know that licensees of M-Lok don’t pay any fees and that they entered into their agreements with Magpul in good faith. It will be interesting to see how recipients of these letters react.

This is the Gibbz patent application.  Don’t let the dates lull you into just dismissing this off hand.  Although you notice a filing date of 21 September, 2015 and a publication date of 14 January, 2016, it’s a continuation of an application filed 26 January, 2013. And therein lies the rub. Who did what, when, and what are the claims? It sounds like Gibbz Arms and the companies with similar systems already on the street are going to have to work this one out.

Update: Below are PDFs of the original patent drawings for the GAMA System from 2013, as well as the revised drawings from 2015. Click the images to view the full document.

Sneak Peek – Drum Mag for .510 Beck

Thursday, February 25th, 2016

The .510 Beck cartridge was designed as an anti-material solution which is compatible with .308 AR-style rifles. The .510 Beck requires a different barrel, bolt, and magazine.  The military model is compatible with the SR-25 but commercial models are coming as well.

This drum magazine for the Beck Defense .510 Beck round is based on the patented X Products .308 50 round drum design. Future models will be skeletonized to help control weight.

Initially, the rounds will be offered in subsonic with weights of 327 to 680 grains.  Coming soon.
