On The Range With The FN EVOLYS

Wednesday, July 20th, 2022

I recently had the opportunity to fire the FN EVOLYS. As the name implies, it is truly the next evolution in FN’s long history of producing belt-fed machine guns.

What makes it stand out more than anything else is their patented lateral feed system which allows one-handed loading. You no longer have to open a top-mounted freed tray cover. The feed tray and cover both open to the side and you mount the belt to the feed tray. It’s not like a Fidlock buckle where it leaps into place but it’s pretty close. Just a bit of firm pressure on the belted rounds and they click into place in the feed pawls. It really works and I found it amazing. However, the weapon can only be configured for left-hand feed.

This also allows for a continuous top rail. No more concerns over where to mount optics and other enablers due to joints in the feed tray cover and no issues over return to zero when the feed tray cover is opened and closed.

While the design has been under development for many years as a follow-on to the MINIMI machine gun but the US Army’s Next Generation Squad Automatic Rifle solicitation gave it a jump start.

While the standard versions are available in NATO-standard 5.56mm and 7.62mm, I fired an example chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor which was developed specifically to fulfill a USSOCOM requirement for a new Lightweight Machine Gun. You may recall that not long after SOCOM adopted 6.5 CM, FN introduced a 6.5 CM variant of the Mk48 Mod 2 which has long been a workhorse within SOF.

As you can see, even though the EVOLYS wasn’t equipped with a suppressor it wasn’t gassy to fire. The barrel is not swappable during sustained fire, but it can be reconfigured within about three minutes to swap calibers.

The EVOLYS is also lighter than its predecessors. The 5.56mm version is 5.5 kg with the 7.62mm variant at 6.2 kg compared to a 7.5 kg M249 and 10.1 kg M240L. Some of this savings is due to the monocoque construction of EVOLYS.

The EVOLYS not only offers ambidextrous controls but also semi and full auto fire. Clearing is easier than with the FN MAG as the last link is automatically ejected at the end of firing so no need to clear the feedtray. Additionally, FN says that there is an anti-runaway gun feature but we didn’t encounter the issue, so I didn’t experience it.

It was a joy to shoot. It was very easy to adapt to the new loading procedure and I actually took longer to accept that there were ambi controls I could use.

Although it is lighter weight than the M240, recoil is a bit better. However, I couldn’t accurately describe the difference as I was firing a 6.5 CM gun rather than 7.62mm. Across the board, the 6.5 CM rounds presents more of a push than the more boisterous recoil impulse of 7.62.

While EVOLYS may be Herstal’s latest design, the company will continue to support their other weapons like the FN MAG and MINIMI mad their US variants the M240 and M249 which will still be available for both new and existing customers. Half of the machine guns in the world were built by FN and it looks like they plan on keeping it that way.

CANSOF Begins Formal Fielding of SIG P320

Monday, July 11th, 2022

In November 2020 a Canadian Special Operator had a negligent discharge with a SIG P320 pistol variant and suffered a wound. The pistol was just beginning fielding at the time but withdrawn from further service pending an investigation into the incident.

Shown is a SIG SAUER P320 X Carry. No details have been released regarding the exact model adopted by CANSOF.

In July 2021 CANSOF released the findings of that investigation exonerating the pistol.

Late last month the command issued a statement that they were once again moving forward with fielding the pistol. Interestingly, they don’t name the manufacturer or model.

Here is their statement:

Canadian Special Operations Forces Command Statement on Bringing Weapon Fleet into Service Following the Unintended Discharge of a Holstered Pistol During Training

June 29, 2022 – Ottawa – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

The Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM) will bring into service a newly procured pistol. This decision is based on the outcomes of deliberate investigative and administrative processes examining the factors that led to the unintended discharge of a holstered pistol during a range training event on November 5, 2020.

Central to leadership’s decision to proceed with bringing the weapon fleet into service was ensuring members’ utmost confidence in the effectiveness and safety of their equipment and weapons.

The decision is based on the following factors:

• The investigation into the November 2020 incident concluded the weapon is technically sound and functioned according to the technical requirements.

•  Weapons technical experts trialed thousands of rounds without an incident reoccurrence.

• The investigation concluded the probability of this same incident reoccurring is assessed to be extremely low.

• Following the investigation, the Command assembled a working group consisting of operators, weapons experts and procurement specialists to develop and assess a number of options on the way ahead. The working group presented those options and analysis. The working group provided the recommendation to CANSOFCOM leadership to carry on with the process of bringing the pistol into service. Before a final decision was taken on the recommended way forward, leadership directed a third party safety/risk assessment occur.

• The third party safety/risk assessment provided additional information pertaining to the recommended way forward to the chain of command that assisted in informing the final decision.

Next steps

Bringing the weapon fleet with ancillary equipment into service will be conducted methodically and will adhere to the new Command implementation and fielding policies being introduced. Introducing these new policies is a direct result of implementing the investigation report’s recommendations. The safety of our members remains our top priority.

B&T BWC9

Friday, June 24th, 2022

The B&T BWC9 is a transformer, changing from a mild mannered lunch box into a 9mm firearm.

Well, that’s what it looks like anyway. See for yourself.

Yes, I’ll acknowledge the elephant in the room. It is quite similar in purpose to the upcoming Magpul x ZEV FDP-9 which is still in development.

It uses a SIG320 trigger group and carry slide with a limited run coming later this year from bt-usa.com.

FN’s Five-Seven Pistol Receives Major Upgrade

Monday, June 13th, 2022

THE ULTIMATE PRECISION PISTOL IS
NOW OPTICS-READY
(McLean, VA – June 13, 2022) FN America, LLC is proud to introduce the all-new FN Five-seveN® MRD optics-ready pistol chambered in 5.7x28mm. After decades of trusted service with global militaries, law enforcement and civilian sport shooters, the FN Five-seveN receives a complete design update with a factory-milled slide to accept most micro red dot optics. Coupled with major upgrades to the frame and slide, the new FN Five-seveN MRD sets a new standard for optic-interoperability, control and accuracy.

“The FN Five-seveN pistol has been immensely popular since its introduction. Its original design capturing the performance of the FN-designed 5.7x28mm cartridge made it an instant success, and it’s positioned to do it yet again with the dramatic redesign of the FN Five-seveN MRD,” said Chris Cole, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for FN America, LLC. “With the addition of an integral optics mounting system on the slide, an already accurate pistol now redefines what handgun accuracy means. We’re truly excited to bring this new pistol to market with features our customers want in their favorite FN caliber.”

The FN Five-seveN MRD, like its predecessor, is a 5.7x28mm-chambered, delayed blowback-operated pistol. The internal, single-action-only hammer produces a clean and consistent trigger pull that breaks at approximately 6 pounds, with minimal take-up and a short reset. FN’s 4.8-inch cold hammer-forged barrel combined with the inherent benefits of the design and high velocity bottleneck cartridge produces a flat-shooting pistol with extremely low felt-recoil. Users can stay on target with accuracy and precision at extended ranges, unmatched by any other semi-auto handguns.

“When we embarked on this design update for the Five-seveN MRD, we focused on the core benefits our user base wants in a modern pistol,” said John Ryan, Director of Product Management for FN America, LLC. “The Five-seveN pistol was already extremely accurate and reliable, although there was untapped performance in the design and cartridge to bring forward. Milling the slide in the factory allows for immediate mounting of almost any MRD on the market, with improved ergonomics and controls, the Five-seveN MRD delivers more precision and versatility for the modern handgunner.”

Following FN’s optics-ready pistol tradition, the Five-seveN MRD’s optic mount consists of a series of plates that mate the optic to the slide. Just like FN’s 509 optics-ready pistols, users are able to mount a miniature red dot sight within minutes using the corresponding plates and screws provided with the pistol. The system is compatible with most common miniature red dot sights including the Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, Trijicon RMR, Vortex Optics, Burris FastFire series, Docter Optics and more. The three-dot photo luminescent sights glow in low light conditions, are adjustable for elevation and windage and co-witness with certain optics.

With newly enhanced slide serrations and extended cocking ridges at the rear of the slide, the Five-seveN MRD’s overall operability and user manipulations are vastly improved while the ergonomic changes to the frame’s backstrap allow for a more natural point of aim and better fit. A new stippled texturing on the grip frame along with more extensive front strap serrations improve grip consistency for complete control. The magazine release has also been enlarged and reshaped for intuitive control and rapid reloads. Carrying over from the original design are the 20-round standard magazine, safety selector located directly above the trigger, serrated trigger shoe and trigger guard.

The FN Five-seveN MRD is available in matte black or FN-signature flat dark earth (FDE) and ships in a zippered pistol case with two 20-round magazines and optics-mounting hardware required to mount an optic. To learn more about the FN Five-seveN MRD, please visit www.fnamerica.com.
