Arc’teryx And Whistler Blackcomb Announce New Partnership

Thursday, October 24th, 2013

North Vancouver BC, October 23, 2013 – Today Arc’teryx and Whistler Blackcomb are proud to announce the two companies enter into an exciting three-year corporate partnership. Beginning this winter season, the agreement will see all Whistler Blackcomb Ski School staff in Arc’teryx uniform, and establishes Arc’teryx as the presenting sponsor of the backcountry experience accessible via Whistler Blackcomb.

We are thrilled to bring Arc’teryx on board and into our corporate partnership family,” says Stuart Rempel, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales at Whistler Blackcomb. “The Arc’teryx brand has extensive backcountry roots and values that align perfectly with Whistler Blackcomb.”

Known for their expertise in extreme alpine environments, Arc’teryx brings this experience to all of its products through a design process that focuses on intended use and conditions. A collaborative effort between the design team and Whistler Blackcomb’s Ski Patrol resulted in custom staff uniforms for the mountain. The new agreement builds on this existing relationship.

Bartosz Barczynski, General Manager of the Adult Snow School Program at Whistler Blackcomb said the Arc’teryx partnership was “a perfect fit”. “With an average snowfall of roughly 12-metres or 40 feet per year, finding a uniform to keep our staff warm and dry was a priority,” says Barczynski. “Our staff works outdoors in all types of conditions on a daily basis so we look for a quality product that can stand up to the elements.”

Arc’teryx remains as the title sponsor of the prestigious Whistler-based Arc’teryx Deep Winter Photo Challenge, presented by GORE-TEX. An elite professional photography competition, Deep Winter challenges six photographers to capture a slideshow story in three days that is worthy of title of “King of Storms” and a $5,000 prize.

Adam Ketcheson, VP of Marketing & B2C at Arc’teryx, says, “Partnering with Whistler Blackcomb is really exciting because it is one of North America’s most iconic big mountain resorts. The expansive backcountry terrain that can be accessed from the high alpine lifts aligns with the Arc’teryx brand. Arc’teryx and Whistler Blackcomb are both driven by quality and performance with roots in the Canadian Coast Mountains.”

DSEi – Arc’teryx LEAF

Tuesday, September 10th, 2013

We’ve pretty much covered all of Arc’teryx LEAF’s current offerings but one thing caught my eye.

The Khard series of packs were designed from the outset to accept organizers and inserts. But so far, I’ve never seen anything like this. Outside of Vancouver, there is only one place that is allowed to repair Arc’teryx items and that is Urs Maretz of Outdoor Repair in Uster, Switzerland. Urs doesn’t do many LEAF repairs but he does make modifications to gear for European customers. This is one of his projects.

Urs produced this prototype Kydeyx pack board insert. In its current form it’s come a bit of a way from this initial model but it still incorporates slots for tied downs. In this case they are using ski ties. The insert connects around the internal daisy chains via a bolt system so this thing isn’t going anywhere. You may also notice a Kydex 40mm insert that accepts 6 rounds.

I think this concept is going to spur a new wave of inserts for the Khard pack.

Arc’teryx LEAF products are available in the UK from Edgar Brothers.

Arc’teryx Opens First U.S. Brand Store In Seattle

Saturday, September 7th, 2013

Vancouver BC (September 6, 2013) – Canadian based outerwear manufacturer and retailer Arc’teryx will officially open a new 2,300 square-foot store in downtown Seattle, WA. Situated at the base of the Seaboard Building at Fourth Avenue and Pike Street the new store will open September 7th, 2013. This will be the first Arc’teryx brand store in the U.S.

Arc’teryx is built upon the principle of obsessive, precise design and production. Manufacturing high performance outdoor clothing, accessories and climbing equipment to the highest possible standards, their products include GORE-TEX outerwear, down and synthetic insulated jackets, gloves and backpacks.
The new store will open premiering the brand’s full collection for Fall/ Winter 2013 and will offer customers an opportunity to learn firsthand about the company’s innovative and forward thinking design process via special engagement areas inside the store.

“There’s a growing, loyal following for the brand and this store is a way for us to showcase the newest and fullest assortment of Arc’teryx products to our consumers, while also allowing them to discover what the brand stands for,” said Adam Ketcheson, VP Senior Director of Marketing & B2C. “Customers will be able to learn more about our research and design processes through hands on technology engagement areas within the store as well as from trained store staff.”

Seattle

All Arc’teryx product design, research and development is done in-house at their head office in North Vancouver, British Columbia.

“In our own facility, we are able to dedicate time and resources to explore unorthodox design concepts and we have complete control over the development of new products,” said Carl Moriarty, Design Manager for Arc’teryx apparel. “Arc’teryx has a philosophy of design that centers on a product’s intended use. The aim is to create something that increases the user’s enjoyment of the activity. By being functionally invisible, what people experience is the activity and their equipment simply does what it’s supposed to do.”

The new Seattle store will officially open its doors on Saturday, September 7th at 10am. There will be GORE-TEX Science & Technology presentations along with a special rain room available where consumers can test out the products and learn firsthand how GORE-TEX works.

Designers from the company’s head office will also be on hand over the day to talk with customers and answer questions.

Chip and Shannon Wilson School of Design at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in British Columbia

Monday, August 26th, 2013

The owners of athletic clothing brand LuLulemon Chip and Shannon Wilson have combined $8 million of their own wealth with a $4 grant from LuLulemon to establish a New School of Design at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Richmond, British Columbia. According to a press release on the Arc’teryx website, “The provincial government is matching the $12-million total donation, with Kwantlen putting up the remainder of what is estimated to be $36 million in total going toward the design school.”

Interestingly, many of the staff at Vancouver-based outdoor clothing manufacturer Arc’teryx are graduates from Kwantlen. So obviously, as a company they are very excited by this development. Both school and business will benefit from their close proximity as students interact with industry on internships.
