Small Arms Solutions report

An LEO and reader of ours recently passed along a report of a blown up weapon that was in use within his department. The report, which was made after an analysis by Small Arms Solutions, details an AR-15 with a Colt lower and an LWRC 10.5 inch upper, which seemingly experienced catastrophic failure due to a faulty Federal Ammunition American Eagle cartridge. The full details of the report can be read in the attached .pdf. Additionally, all three companies, Federal, Colt, and LWRC, are working with the department to correct the issue.

Colt Is Buying LWRC! *Yawn

Friday, February 21st, 2014

Since it’s being reported elsewhere I’ll share what has been floating around for some time, Colt is supposedly buying LWRC. Nobody has any real details yet because it hasn’t actually happened…yet. So if somebody tells you they have facts, they don’t. Until the ink is dry, it’s all just a rumor.

AUSA – Colt

Tuesday, October 22nd, 2013

Colt debuted their new SWORD system at AUSA. The Sniper Weapon & Observer Reconnaissance Devices Technology Demonstrator is based on Colt Canada’s Small Arms Network Power Data System. It combines a laser designator equipped observer with snipers utilizing Android networked rifles.

SWORD not only allows the observer to designate targets for multiple shooters but the snipers can also share data across the network including live optic feeds.

The nodes in the network are IP based so data can be shared with anyone given permissions. The system can accept additional data inputs such as UAV feeds.

The various rifle mounted components include a networked optic and Android device which sit atop Colt’s powered rail which incorporates a battery in the buttstock. Alternatively, it can use a Panacis SharePack.

Stop The MFing Presses! A Colt AK?

Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

20130618-191957.jpg

This publicity photo popped up last night on Colt’s Facebook page and has started an uproar. That’s Texas Governor Rick Perry shooting a rifle at the Colt factory that has an AK mag sticking out of it and by the looks of it, a US Palm mag. And, it looks like it is going into a magwell (yes, a magwell). And, that looks like a monolithic upper maybe? Maybe were looking at a piston AR-AK hybrid? And, maybe it was purpose built for a foreign client? Ok, there no “maybe” on that last part (as in, “you can count on it.”) And yes, I know, it’s not really an AK, more of an AR in 7.62×39. I hear Gov Perry took one of these handful of prototypes home.

I don’t care if Colt banged your sister and left town when she came up pregnant, this is an interesting development. Sometimes you have to spell things out for people, otherwise they’ll wax all poetic about stuff they don’t understand. Magwells and AK magazines do not play well together. That is one of many reasons why this is remarkable.

Kickin’ It Old School

Someone coughed up this old advertisement for a Colt Sporter but I’m not sure how old it actually is. Anyone else remember the offset pivot pins?

AUSA – Colt

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012

Lots of stuff in the Colt booth. First off, these photos are for those of you who wondered how they reconcile the 5.56 and 7.62 mag wells of the 901.

Notice that the front takedown (or pivot) pin is slightly forward of and below normal on the 901. An adapter for the narrower throat of the 5.56 upper is pinned place on the normal, Mil Spec point.

Next, they displayed three rifles marked as Prototype.

They also had quite a few interesting custom finishes on display.

Finally, Colt showcased the M45A1″ built for the USMC.

Colt Officially Announces MARSOC CQB Pistol Contract Award

Saturday, July 21st, 2012

20120721-000927.jpg

Yesterday Colt announced their award for the M45 Close Quarter Battle Pistol.

Colt Defense LLC has been awarded an Indefinite-Delivery/Indefinite-Quantity contract by the U.S. Marine Corps for up to 12,000 M45 Close Quarter Battle Pistols (CQBP), plus spares and logistical support. The new CQBP is a direct descendant of the iconic Colt M1911 adopted by the U.S. military in 1911 and carried as the primary sidearm through all the major conflicts of the 20th century.

The CQBP contract is for a five-year period and has a potential value of up to $22.5 million. The CQBP expands on a long history of MARCORSYSCOM re-building original Government-issue 1911s, primarily for use by Force Recon and MARSOC units.

“This is a truly gratifying contract award,” said Gerry Dinkel, President and CEO of Colt Defense. “To have the 1911 selected again for U.S. Forces 101 years after its initial introduction is just an incredible testament to the timeless design and effectiveness of the Colt 1911. Colt Defense looks forward to another great partnership with the Marine Corps as we renew industry production of the military 1911.”

The initial Delivery Order on the contract is for 4036 CQBP, plus spares. Deliveries will begin later this year.
