It is an impressive tool designed specifically for military Information Technology specialists but in our conversations with readers we have come to realize that it has just as much applicability in the civilian market. It features a Wire cutter, CAT5 jacket cutter, RJ45 Crimper Head, Wire strippers, Knife blade, Magnetic driver extension with tool heads. Additionally, the handles are crafted from glass filled nylon to help reduce weight and the side of the handle that houses the driver extension and tool heads can be removed.

Gerber Legendary Blades

Gerber was handing out samples of their “new” Shard which closely resembles the Artifact but without the blade. Also, “new” is a relative term as they have been handing out samples at several shows over the last year but are just now releasing it to the market. Gerber claims it is airport friendly and I put that to the test. On my flight out of Salt lake City I put it in the bin with my other pocket litter and it went through security just fine. A simple pocket accessory, it features a bottle opener, nail puller, and phillips head.

Sea to Summit

While most products being shown at OR won’t be available until January 2010 at the earliest, there are a variety of products you can get now. One example is the Alpha utensil set from Sea to Summit. A more economical alternative to titanium flatware, the Knife, Fork and Spoon set is made from hard anodized 7075-T6 aircraft aluminum alloy in a smooth matte finish and comes with a mini carabiner to hold it all together. The individual utensils have hexagonal holes cut out of the handle to reduce weight which provide three different size hex wrenches (3 mm, 4 mm & 5 mm). Available from Sea to Summit.

Gerber has produced an excellent seat belt cutter. It is compact, lightweight and stores in a durable friction sheath that will affix to a single PALS bar or can be attached to webbing with a MALICE clip. Interestingly, the color matched MALICE clip was marked with the Gerber Legendary Blades logo as well as Tactical Tailor.

The 420HC stainless steel blade is designed to one thing and do it well. In our test it made quick work of Type 8 nylon webbing. The Seat Belt Cutter is simply to deploy and has a large finger loop and grooves. The non-slip handle also features a pointed end which can be used to break glass in an emergency.

Available in Foliage, Coyote Brown, and Black from Garrett Container Systems.

Gerber Artifact

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Gerber considers the Artifactâ„¢ a key chain tool due to its compact size. It features an removable #11 hobby blade, cross driver, small and medium flat drivers, wire stripper, pry bar/paint can opener and a key chain attachment hole. It also includes 3 replacement blades and blade holder. As it utilizes hobby blades one user has suggested that you could dispose of the blade and replace it later in case you run into issues at the airport but the other features may give reason for pause.
