ORSM – MSR Trailshot Water Filter

Friday, August 5th, 2016

Cascade Designs brand MSR, showed the Trailshot Water Filter at this week’s ORSM. At $49 it is an amazing bargain for a personal water filter which can be used to drink directly from the source or to fill containers. It’s very simple to use; drop the 15″ prefilter end into the water source and then squeeze the device to pump the water through the filter. Although, it’s important to note that the Trailshot filters bacteria and protozoa to NSF Protocol P231, but not viruses.

The Trailshot is only 5.4oz and you can fill up a 1 liter bottle in just 60 seconds with up to 2,000 liters over the filter’s lifetime. It’s cleanable in the field of it gets gunned up with a few shakes or a rinse in potable water. Coming January, 2017.

OR – MSR Guardian Purifier

Monday, August 10th, 2015

There is a lot of cool stuff coming out of Cascade Designs but this beats them all, hands down. The Guardian is not only a self cleaning water filter by using 10% of the filtered d water to comstant,y flush itself. It also meets NSF Protocol P248, used by the U.S. Military which means it will filter out viruses, bacteria and protozoa.

It uses a dual-acting pump head, capable of producing 2.5 liters per minute of potable water with minimal user effort. It is very easy to pump.

Specs:

Ultrafiltration (UF) Membrane Technology
-0.02 micron pore size provides a true physical barrier for removing all suspended solids and microbiological contaminants (viruses, bacteria, and protozoa).
-High flow rates achieved at low pumping pressures.

Pump Design
-Dual-acting pump mechanism minimizes user effort but maximizes water production.
-Self-positioning pressure relief valve protects against over-pressurization of the UF filter cartridge.
-Ergonomic handle design has sufficient finger clearance for the purifier to be operated while wearing gloves.

Flow Rate 2,500 mL/min
Weight 16 oz.
Pump Rate 80 strokes per minute
Dimensions 2.8 x 4.6 x 8.2 inches
Microbiological Efficacy
Viruses > 4 log reduction†
Bacteria > 6 log reduction†
Protozoa > 3 log reduction†
Filter Capacity > 10,000 L in clear water
> 600 L per NSF P248 standard
Operational Life 40 days based on a 15 L/day daily water consumption
Filter Shelf Life 5 years

MSR – Luxury Lite Mesh Cot

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012

Introduced during OR Summer Market, MSR’s Thermarest brand is offering the Luxury Lite Mesh Cot. I just tried this sample out during an industry get together courtesy of Open Range. It’s very cool. The longest component is 12″ and it can be broken down for carriage or stowage.

As you can see, it gets you just off the ground but the design flexes to support your body. Definitely beats sleeping in the dirt.

The mesh cover is lightweight and available in a variety of colors. Lengthwise, it is supported by 2 shock corded poles. It is suspended off of the ground via 12 circular nylon feet which accept aluminum poles that arch for tension to keep everything taught. It’s a real slick set up. What amazes me is how compact and light it is. It’s under 3 lbs complete. This is how big it is stowed.
