Something for the Cigar Smokers

Friday, June 10th, 2011

Fisher Space Pen Company has combined their already kick ass pen design with a cigar punch. The punch is ingeniously concealed in the pen’s cap and they have included a stone to keep the punch sharp. Additionally, the pen can be attached to your keys or a lanyard so that it will always be handy.

Team SureFire Sweeps MGM Ironman 3-Gun

Friday, June 10th, 2011

SureFire has announced that Team SureFire kicked ass at the 2011 MGM Ironman 3-Gun competition (okay, they didn’t use those exact words) with women’s captain, Maggie Reese, men’s captain Barry Dueck and co-captain Mike Voigt, all repeating as champions in their divisions.

“Last year’s championship was a blur because we shot over three long days in rough conditions,” said Reese, who just started shooting competitively four years ago. “This year I was able to focus and just get the job done while enjoying the match along the way. It was fantastic!”

Team SureFire, also features 10-time multi-gun national champion and Open Division shooter, Michael Voigt, and the 3-Gun Nation tour points leader and team captain, Barry Dueck, who already has two tour wins this year in the Heavy Optics Division. Dueck and Voigt were also teammates on USA’s 2008 IPSC World Shoot team where they took top honors in the Modified Division.

SureFire also sponsors other shooters around the country like world record pistol shooter, Max Michel, who recently won the Double Tap Championship. Other 3-gun shooters who proudly wear the SureFire logos on their jersey are Team FNH and Taran Butler (5-time National Champion).

Congrats!

Warrior Expo East Breakout Sessions

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

Aside from seeing lots of cool new gear and running into old friends, one of the greatest things about Warrior Expo is the breakout sessions. Not only is Stanley McChrystal going to give the keynote address, there are multiple opportunities to learn more about key technologies.

After learning of the theme of his address, “Plywood Leadership: Lessons on Leadership from a Warrior, Statesman, and Scholar”, I am particular looking forward to GEN McChrystal’s talk. But there are plenty of other chances to pick up something new.

But GEN McChrsytal won’t be the only flag officer on hand to lend his expertise. In the session, “Logistics: The Big Picture”, Gen Carrol H. “Howie” Chandler, USAF (Ret), LTG Robert T. Dail, USA (Ret), BG Steve Seay, USA (Ret), and Capt Donald M. Ervine, USN (Ret) will relate their experience with historical procurement trends, upcoming issues, and potential solutions to these continued challenges.

We are also particularly fortunate that Guy Cramer, President & CEO of HyperStealth Biotechnology Corp will be addressing “Camouflage – The New Science of Stealth” right on the heels of the closure of the US Army Camouflage Improvement Effort solicitation. At Warrior Expo – West Guy mentioned the existence of a new technology and has said he will disclose more information on it at Warrior Expo – East. What’s more, maybe we can persuade him to reveal his approach to the Army requirement.

Additionally, iRobot will demonstrate their robotics technologies in their booth during a presentation entitled, “Government & Industrial Robots: Robots that make a Difference.” DuPontâ„¢ will utilize their mobile THERMO-MAN® demonstrator to show how important FR clothing is for the service member.

Other session topics include “Navigating DOD Contracting Vehicles” as well as “Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC)”. Overall, a pretty good opportunity to learn more about industry.

AOR1 in Action

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

Here’s a photo from January of VADM Robert Harward, commander of Combined Joint Interagency Task Force 435 wearing a Crye field shirt in AOR1. It is eerily similar to the new NWU Type 2 uniforms are hitting the fleet. Don’t look at that jacket in his hands though, it doesn’t exist.

BCB Wall Breaker

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

The Wall Breaker from BCB is a non-explosive, compressed air cannon which fires standard plastic water cooler drums breach walls, gates and doors for rapid quick entry. It can be fired every 10 to 15 seconds. The water jugs can be filled with water, sand, or other materials. Material choices can be made to mitigate collateral damage offering an alternative to explosive entries.

Because the projectile contents are so variable, the exact range (3 to 90 meters/10 to 300 feet), kinetic energy, etc are all dependent upon the state of the projectile contents (i.e. solid, fluid, etc), weight and environment factors. However, BCB was kind enough to provide us with this graph that is based on their trials.

BCB also related to SSD, “The pressure is also a user definable factor and more is not always better, the nature of the projectile and the intended range. It’s process of collating your own data as the targets users attempt to breach are different the world over.”

The Wall Breaker’ uses dive tanks and its high pressure hosing and regulators are safety tested to far beyond the Safe Working Pressure (SWP) of the Wall Breaker. Additionally, a safety blow-off valve is fitted to ensure that the pressure vessel cannot be over pressurized. The Wall Breaker can be set up as a stand alone system or mounted on a vehicle and can also be fired remotely.

3D Printed Clothing Comes of Age

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

The N12 bikini is the world’s first ready-to-wear, completely 3D-printed article of clothing.

That’s a pretty interesting statement. Especially when you consider that the first article of clothing is a bikini. Check it out and consider the possibilities (tactical possibilities).

Manufactured from Nylon 12, the garment is made using the SLS 3D printing process. Shapeways calls this material “white, strong, and flexible”, because its strength allows it to bend without breaking even when printed very thin. With a minimum wall thickness of .7 mm, it is possible to make working springs and almost thread-like connections. Once printed, the garment snaps together like one of those old folded paper models; insert tab A into slot B.

The material is waterproof and is made up of thousands of circular plates connected by thin strings. This makes the garment very flexible.
