Extreme Outfitters Supports Bulldog Challenge

Sunday, March 18th, 2012

Extreme Outfitters and its staff was once again was on hand at the Citadel as the lead sponsor for the 16th annual Bulldog challenge. Members from College ROTC units around the country, active duty military teams, civilians and some former SEALS such as Ford Menfee participated in this years event. The Bulldog Challenge is a fun and dirty endurance course that involves running, and overcoming obstacles of many kinds covering the 10K course.

Extreme Outfitters once again stepped up to the plate and provided nearly $5,000 in door prizes, had one of its Tactical trailers on hand and handed out hundreds of BPA water bottles to the participants who took time out on their weekend to compete in this grueling and challenging event. This will be one of the many events that Extreme Outfitters supports and sponsors to heighten awareness of our nations heroes.

This year, proceeds from the race will go to create the Semper Fi Society Scholarship Fund to give financial aid annually to a participating member of the society enrolled in NROTC and working toward an officer’s commission. Next event; Bataan Death March 25, 2012 White Sands Missile Range, come out meet the founder and owner of Extreme Outfitters and Team Xtreme running do the event in sealed gas masks!

The Artists Strike Back

Sunday, March 18th, 2012

This morning’s issue of the Boston Globe featured a prominent picture of Ops-Core front man David Rogers calmly standing in front of racks laden with protective helmets. Just below his picture was a small inset photo of a rather irate, finger pointing artist tenant of the Midway Studios facility also occupied by Ops-Core. The issues at hand seem to be bigger than Ops-Core. Really, it’s all about money. Many of the artist tenants of the facility signed on with the understanding that they could rent and then purchase their spaces. After developer Bob Kuehn died of a heart attack they began to find out that they couldn’t purchase their spaces after all. To further exacerbate matters, the building came at risk of foreclosure if the developers couldn’t find a renter for the large “theater” space in the basement. The nut was $3 million over 10 years and Ops-Core came in and offered to place their helmet assembly operation in that space. Their rent would come close to covering the needed funding. But, rather than looking at Ops-Core as a savior of their rent controlled apartments, they’ve decided to take out their frustration on them. Granted, their was an isolated incident when a work crew hired by Ops-Core to refinish floors failed to properly vent the space. Some of the residents chose to leave their spaces overnight due to the polyurethane fumes. But, that isn’t likely to happen again.

Ultimately, the Boston Globe story, “At Fort Point studios, artists feel betrayed” is really just gasoline on a fire. It doesn’t solve anything but rather fans the flames of discontent. Furthermore, it fails to mention the impact of the Ops-Core closure. 80 employees are collecting unemployment and it has caused a hiccup in the assembly of helmets. Finally, I doubt but few of the tenants have considered their actions. If Ops-Core leaves, it may well result in the closure of the facility altogether. Assuming that much of a loan would require guaranteed income. While there are numerous tenants at Midway Studios, it is doubtful that they would band together and form the business entity required to acquire the building and manage it. After all, they’re artists, if they wanted to manage real estate portfolios they wouldn’t be living in rent controlled spaces.

Overall, it’s a lot of venting, and posturing and well, “Occupy Ops-Core.” In the end, the artist tenants will turn their outrage elsewhere. Hopefully, it will be before any more damage is done.

Taking inspiration from a toothpaste tube, TheEpicenter.com designed this stainless steel key. Much like the keys used on old tinned meats, you attach the slot over the end of the MRE retort pouch and simply twist in order to push the food to the top. Made in Eugene, Oregon. The hole fits key chains or carabiners up to 8 mm.

Salomon Quest 4D GTX Boots in Olive!

Sunday, March 18th, 2012

We’ve been writing about the amazing Salomon Quest 4D GTX Boots boots for some time. First in Grey, then Brown and now they’re available in Olive! During last weekend’s excursion to Richmond we stopped by REI and lo and behold, there they were.

The color combo is actually Olive, Dark Olive and Black and for those of you in Woodland or Alpine environments this might be just the ticket.

Built on the same last as the Salomon XA Pro 3D, the sole relies on Salomon’s 4D Chassis. The outsole has an ascending lug pattern in the front and a braking pattern in the rear. There’s also a cushioning pad beneath the foot, the chassis to protect against twisted ankles, and then an additional cushioning pad to absorb rocks and roots underfoot (4 layers= 4D). Finally, the boot is also Gore-tex lined.

“Doomsday Preppers” the Real Dirttime Story

Saturday, March 17th, 2012

Dirt Time‘s Christopher Nyerges, speaks with colleagues Dude McLean and Alan Halcon about his role in the National Geographic show “Doomsday Preppers.” I like the show but it’s good to hear about the drama that is injected into the vignettes. The show’s producers sure do a good job of making people look silly.
