World Record Breaking Freefall Wrap Up

Monday, October 15th, 2012

In case you missed history being made yesterday, here’s the money shot.

Here are a few facts about yesterday’s record breaking freefall jump from the edge of space courtesy of Airman magazine.

Here are the stats from the jump:
Exit Altitude: 128,100 feet
Free Fall Time: 4 minutes, 20 seconds
Free Fall Distance: 119,846 feet
Maximum Velocity: 373 meters/second — He achieved Mach 1.24!

Some final words from the press conference:

“When I was standing there on top of the world so humble, you are not thinking about breaking records. I was thinking about coming back alive. You do not want to die in front of your parents and all these people….I thought ‘please God, don’t let me down.”
~ Felix Baumgartner

Best Quote:”I’d like to give the one-fingered salute to everyone who said he was going to break apart when he went supersonic.”
~ Col Joseph Kittinger

“I want to inspire the next generation. I want to be in mission control with someone younger than me wanting to break my record.”
~Felix

It had me on the edge of my seat and I think I was holding my breath until he got stable in freefall. My hat’s off to Felix Baumgartner but I have to say that Joe Kettinger is a stud. Consider that he jumped thousands of feet lower than Baumgartner yet held freefall longer before deploying his chute. And, he did it with a compromised pressure suit. And, it was in 1960! That man has balls as big as church bells. Here’s to the next young person who works to break these records!

First Hydration Pack?

Monday, October 15th, 2012

Some readers from Down Under shared this advertisement from a 1982 issue of “Playboy” magazine (apparently, the mail is very slow). It depicts what they think may be the first example of a commercial hydration pack. I know I didn’t receive my first militarized Camelbak until 1991 when Jeff Wemmer was still there.

It really looks like more of a spray for cooling than a true hydration pack. What do you think?

Black Diamond Advanced Technology Delivers MTS to ANG and AFRC

Monday, October 15th, 2012

Earlier this year the US Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) selected the Black Diamond Advanced Technology Modular Tactical System (MTS) as their next-generation Operator Control System (OCS). Used by Special Operations Forces and Joint Terminal Attack Controllers, the Battlefield Air Operations (BAO) OCS is a wearable solution, incorporating a tactical vest with power management and a rugged computing device, designed for dismounted Close Air Support operations and communications control.

Bow, they have completed delivery of 92 MTS kits to several units within the United States Air National Guard (ANG) and Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC). Additionally, Black Diamond is now training end-users on the proper operation and employment of the MTS.

The MTS units will be used by Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) personnel within select ANG Air Support Operations Squadrons (ASOS), and Guardian Angel Combat Rescue Officer Team Commanders (CROTCs) and Pararescue Team Leaders (PJTLs) within the 10th AFRC.

TACP personnel within 13 different ANG ASOS elements make up an elite combat force whose mission is to provide airspace deconfliction and close air support for ground troops. TACPs will receive training on using the MTS in a dismounted role to digitally aid their mission of precision terminal attack guidance including targeting, communications management, and other command and control functions.

The 10th Air Force houses the Combat Air Forces components of AFRC. CROTCs and PJTLs at a number of these installations will receive equipment and training from Black Diamond Advanced Technology, enabling them to aid their vital personnel recovery mission and provide emergency medical care and evacuation in combat and humanitarian operations.

Black Diamond Advanced Technology specializes in wearable computer and communications systems that treat the warfighter as a system, allowing foot-mobile operation while carrying less weight and providing unobstructed access to ammunition, hydration and other mission-critical equipment. The MTS is primarily used by SOF personnel for a variety of missions including Precision Targeting, C4ISR, SA, EOD and UAS/UGV control. MTS has been fielded in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) since 2010.

The MTS will be on display at the ANG/AFRC Weapons and Tactics (WEPTAC) Conference in Tucson, AZ, Oct 22-23. Units who are not part of this fielding can source MTS through www.ADSinc.com.

Felix Baumgartner’s Pressure Suit

Sunday, October 14th, 2012

Today Felix Baumgartner attempts to break four world records, three of which were set in the early 1960s. Both were set by military men. The highest altitude parachute jump and longest freefall was set in 1960 by USAF Capt Joe Kittinger and the highest altitude manned balloon flight was set in 1961 by USN Cdr Malcolm Ross and Lt Cdr Victor Prather. Unfortunately, Lt Cdr Prather died during the recovery at sea.

Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner is attempting to shatter these records and also be the first human to break the sound barrier in freefall.

In order to make a jump from 120,000′ he is making the ascent in a ballon. There is little atmosphere at that altitude and as soon as he depressurized the balloon’s cabin his life would be at danger if it weren’t for his pressurized suit and helmet manufactured by David Clark. Unfortunately, there is an issue with his heated visor. The mission continues as the ground team assesses their options.

Lets cheer him and his team on.

MultiCam Shows Up Everywhere

Sunday, October 14th, 2012

At least from a branding standpoint, when the civilian consumer market thinks military, they think MultiCam. Yet another example of this is this “Military Limited Edition” bottle of firm hold styling gel from American Crew.

20121014-111808.jpg

I took the boys in for hair cuts this morning and low-and-behold, there it was, a MultiCamesque pattern on the shelf of our local Best Cuts. Now, American Crew wants you to know that they support the USO. But this bottle illustrates an issue that someone is going to encounter starting early next year. The US Army is going to select a new family of camouflage patterns. US Government use of those patterns will be covered a licensing agreement. But commercial use, such as this bottle will controlled by the pattern developer. It’s going to be very lucrative for the winner, if they can control its licensed use. With everything from Halloween costumes to bookmarks to hair gel already out there sporting MultiCam in order to capitalize on America’s support of her military, how will the winner of the US Army Camouflage Improvement Effort get their arms around the market and control use of their IP?
