MDM – Expeditionary Hygiene System

Thursday, September 26th, 2013

The Expeditionary Hygiene System was designed for use by personnel who find themselves without readily available laundry services to do it for themselves. All too often in combat conditions, more personnel succumb to illness and other hygiene related injuries than enemy fire. Taking a look at this system you can tell that the inventor took a look at the various field expedient means deployed troops use to wash their clothing and adapted a product to these techniques.

20130926-090227.jpg

It can be used as a Field Laundry System, Shower Bag and Waterproof Bag. Lets face it, it’s obvious this is a modified waterproof bag. In fact, it’s an 8 gal model and weighs in at 6.5 oz.

You can use it as a Field Shower by filling it with water, suspending it in the sun above head level to warm up and then using it. The pull valve can be used to control water flow. Sure, it’s not going to be a hot shower in a 5-star hotel but after a few days in the bush, it’s great to wash the dirt off.

Finally, the EHS can be used as a Field Laundry. The user places his clothing into the bag along with .5gal of water along with bio-degradable soap. After rolling the closure shut the clothing can be kneaded on a hard surface in order to dislodge dirt from the clothing. After a few minutes, the pull valve is removed and the dirty water allowed to drain. Next, the bag is swung windmill fashion to fully drain as much soap as possible. Finally, two rinse cycles with clean water are recommended. The EHS creator recommends that the user only wash underclothing and socks so as to conserve water and make the process quick.

MDM – Knight’s Armament Company

Thursday, September 26th, 2013

Knight’s had their entry for the US Army Forward Rail Accessory Kit (FRAK) program. KAC is one of three finalists along with PPI and Adams Arms. The URX IBN rail essentially becomes the barrel nut and comes with a set of shims that can be reused.

20130926-094256.jpg

Technically, it can be installed by a unit Armorer but in the Army armorers no longer remove barrel nuts so it has to be done at Depot level. It features a removable lower rail that is removed via a detent that can be depressed with a cartridge tip. Then, you can replace the lower rail with an M203/320/26 equipped either with the GI mounting hardware or KAC’s free float versions.

Additionally, you can mount an MRE rail but that is not currently part of the FRAK program. Hopefully, we’ll see that as an ECP or P3I initiative.

MDM – Rite in the Rain

Thursday, September 26th, 2013

20130926-080732.jpg

Rite in the Rain’s waterproof M4 /M16 zero target has been around for quite some time. One side features the 25m M4 zero target and the other side is for the M16A2/A4. The waterproof properties aren’t just great for those rainy days on the range. It also means that the targets won’t dry out in hot environments and disintegrate once you start shooting them.

What’s more, they have an NSN, 7530-01-544-9471.

MDM – Office of Naval Research

Thursday, September 26th, 2013

The Office of Naval Research displayed several technologies they are developing to help Lighten the Load of the US Marine. One of these projects is the Modular Personal Protection System.

20130926-082925.jpg

It is intended as a means to investigate new materials, technologies, and techniques in order to make a leap ahead for personal protection by reducing parasitic weight in armor systems. As you can see, one way is to ditch traditional MOLLE designs.

20130926-082955.jpg

Additionally, they have developed a new software tool called CPAT that models survivability based on armor placement and materials.

This work is helping armor developers in the difficult decision of trade off between coverage and mobility.

MDM – Serket

Thursday, September 26th, 2013

Serket showed us their new Integrated Knee Pad developed in conjunction with Unequal Technologies. Serket relies smart engineering and solid partnerships with others industry to offer a better mousetrap but you may not have heard of Unequal Technologies. Their mission is to develop products to protect the human body from pain and injury by offering unique impact attenuation technologies originally developed to offer high-impact protection for those in the military. Interestingly, they were quickly adapted for innumerable sports applications. Today, you’re just as likely to find Unequal Technologies on a Soldier in theater as you are on an NFL quarterback.

Serket and Unequal joined forces to offer a state-of-the-art 3-Layer composite technology. The Serket-Unequal Integrated Knee Pad (IKP) system offers up improved comfort and performance over existing knee/extremity systems – including ballistic protection – an important feature that is missing from commercially available systems currently on the market. Additionally, that same Kevlar insert also resists punctures. Despite these advantages, the Serket-Unequal IKP is about the price as existing systems.

You can see the Kevlar layers embedded in this cross section of the IKP.

Serket-Unequal IKP spec details:
• Integrated ballistics available in two systems:
o 2 grain – 1,000 feet per second frag protection
o 17 grain – 1,150 feet per second frag protection
• Puncture resistance at least four-times higher than existing commercially available systems – including hard shell systems
• State-of-the-art plastomer material is comfortable, soft and pliable in a variety of temperatures, so it easily bends with the wearer’s knee
• Impact protection minimization of energy severity index and G force vs exiting commercially available systems
• Flame resistant
• Anti-microbial and anti-fungal
• One piece closed cell construction won’t absorb water/perspiration – avoiding weight gain and induction of bacterial/fungi
• Cost: comparable to other existing commercially available systems

The Serket-Unequal IKP will work in conjunction with traditional IKP-ready combat pants, and this fall, Serket will introduce its own combat pant that not only works with the IKP, but can be used with existing pants.

The Serket-Unequal IKP is available now as a COTS solution.
