I Know You Guys Are Better Than This

Thursday, July 18th, 2013

According to Moz.com, the headline makes the message. And by the way I notice that folks on Facebook read a headline and seem to magically know something about the content of a link, there is definitely something to this. Here are a couple of takeaways from their story because few of you will actually go read their story.

-Explosion in content competing for readers’ attention: A Day in the Internet shows that 2 million blog posts, 294 billion emails, and 864 thousand hours of video are created daily. Each day also brings 400 million tweets.

-80% of readers never make it past the headline: According to some sources, on average, eight out of 10 people will read headline copy, but only two out of 10 will read the rest.

Now look at this chart. They say that “list” stories draw the most attention. Cracked.com has built an empire on lists. So apparently, the interwebs has come down to two dominant themes: porn and lists of stupid things. But, I know you guys are better than this aren’t you? Otherwise, I wouldn’t be the King of Tactical Media. So tell me I’m right and this is utter BS or do I have to start putting up fake formulaic headlines to drive traffic?

Donate to the Son Tay Raid Historical Project

Wednesday, July 17th, 2013

20130716-203100.jpg

The Son Tay Raid is one of the most significant events in American military history. Planning and training took place at Eglin AFB in Florida in 1970. Now, a group is raising money to move the last remaining building that housed the force as it prepared for the raid. They want to move it to the new 7th Group compound and turn it into a heritage center.

This project is to save and restore the last remaining barracks used during the planning of the Son Tay Raid. The Son Tay Raid, conducted in 1970, is a significant event in Special Forces and Joint Military Operations history. The barracks is currently scheduled for demolition under a footprint reduction plan. We want to relocate it to the nearby 7th Special Forces Group area on Eglin Air Force Base and restore it into a heritage center, dedicated to the history of the Son Tay Raid and the Special Forces.

Initially the building relocation will cost between $65 and $115k. This is dependent on variables such as the presence of asbestos, power line movement, etc. The building will then require renovation to bring it up to current construction codes and building the history displays. The follow on work has not yet been estimated as we hope to use internal labor for as much as possible.

Heritage Brewing Co. is a microbrewery located in Manassas, Virginia. They offer a mix of year round and seasonal brews, with the occasional limited release, showing off a more creative side. They’re looking to expand to a 20 barrel operation set to open mid-Fall, including a tasting room, beer fermentation room, and eventually a canning line, and they’re using Kickstarter to realize their goal. After all, with a product like this:

APFU

Rather than making a splash by unveiling the APFU on the Army’s birthday last month, details of the new Army Physical Fitness Uniform are leaked to no fanfare. Hopefully, the Army will see fit to announce the findings of the Camouflage Improvement Effort as well.
