Sneak Peek – American Kami MicrAxe

Friday, January 31st, 2014

Coming soon from American Kami is a new batch of the MicrAxe. Manufactured from 3/8″ thick S7 which is a shock steel. In fact, it’s the stuff they make jackhammer bits out of. Overall length is 11.5″. These will be coated with black or FDE DLC from Ionbond and feature OD, coyote, or black handles.

At 37oz total weight, the MicrAxe is about the same as complete weight of a 24oz framing hammer. Like DJ told me, “Small form factor, yet still fully capable of wrecking stuff.”

Heritage Creative Photos-18

Stoney Creek, ON – January 30, 2014 – With all the changes happening at Baffin, it is nice to see that some things remain the same. Based on the original mold from 1997, Baffin is proud to launch the boot that started it all – The Heritage.

With a layering structure inspired by the Inuit, Baffin developed technologies to modernize the traditional approach. “From the five layer Inuit boot, Baffin’s eight layer system came to fruition and remains at the core of our equity today,” says Brand Manager, Mark Hubner. “It’s important to remember and celebrate our roots, and what better way to do so then recreating the boot that sparked our success in the cold weather industry.”

Fully assembled at Baffin’s Stoney Creek headquarters, this limited edition boot features leathers sourced from Quebec, natural beaver trim from the West Coast, and bases molded right in their head office warehouse attachment, this limited edition boot is the definition of a true Canadian product! President Paul Hubner says that, “Part of Baffin’s heritage is in this box. Without this technology, we wouldn’t be the company we are today, which is why we want to celebrate our success and manufacture a purely Canadian boot.”

In addition to a number of brand new brand developments, Baffin launched The Heritage Boot at the Outdoor Retailer Tradeshow and Expo in Salt Lake City January 2014.

Christensen Arms Launches New 2014 Product Innovations

Utah firearms company engineers new technology to transform the user experience

(GUNNISON, Utah, Jan. 14, 2014) — Christensen Arms, one of the country’s most technologically innovative manufacturers of firearms, will kick off 2014 by introducing the Lock Tech Match (LTM) Trigger System, Castle Doctrine Modern Sporting Rifle (CD-10 and CD-15), Christensen Bolt Action, and stainless steel and carbon-fiber barrels, all of which are engineered and manufactured in-house. The advanced technologies featured in all of Christensen’s firearms are part of its strategy to continually evolve the experience of operating a firearm and to provide a superior product that combines cutting edge composites and advanced product engineering.

The Lock Tech Match (LTM) Trigger System is a single stage safety lock system that incorporates a safety hook to lock the hammer in place to ensure the firearm can never shoot while in safe mode. Current trigger systems on the market can still fire if dropped or jostled. Christensen introduces technology that prevents the chance of an accidental discharge. The LTM Trigger System is available on the CA-10, CA-15, and new CD-10 and CD-15.

The new Castle Doctrine Modern Sporting Rifle (CD-10 and CD-15) comes with a new OSS suppressor for reduced flash and noise upon firing. The OSS Suppressor is manufactured with suppression technology based on real world, wartime, and commercial demands. The component combines all OSS technologies into a single unit creating a revolutionary modular suppression device that utilizes 12 patented technologies. This system is specifically engineered to a weapon’s operating system, caliber, and barrel length. The OSS Suppressor unit effectively reduces visual and audio signature, back pressure, expelled gases, and operating system wear to give shooters optimal suppression performance. The CD AR is inspired by the Castle Doctrine and designed with force and protection in mind.

The new Christensen Bolt Action is precisely cut, not casted, to its final form with electrical discharge machining (wire EDM) to deliver high accuracy and consistency. Christensen Bolt Action is equipped with a drop magazine and nitrite coated bolt and receiver. Available in both short and long versions for the tactical and hunting markets, the Christensen Bolt Action offers precision, versatility, and dependability.

For the first time, Christensen now offers a lower price point barrel line made with stainless steel that is highly durable and rigid. Christensen’s carbon-fiber barrel line is still developed with their patented lightweight carbon-fiber technology, designed to increase the longevity, durability and accuracy in varying temperatures. Both barrel lines are available in matchgrade and select match-grade. Match-grade indicates that the bore measures within .0005 inches of the standard diameter and does not vary more than .0003 inches for the length of the barrel. In select match-grade, the groove diameter air gauges within .0003 inches of the standard diameter and does not vary more than .0001 inches for the entire length of the barrel. Both barrel grades have a maximum Total Indicator Runout (TIR) of .003 inches or less, indicating a minimal tolerance for straightness deviation.

“Our aerospace industry DNA constantly fuels our capability to develop new products,” said Jason Christensen, president of Christensen Arms. “We focus on not only what our customers want now, but what they don’t know is possible. Our new products extend our promise to outperform in quality, experience, performance, technology, and selection.”

Vertx Announces Partnership With Dakota Meyer And FTWGA Brand

Friday, January 31st, 2014

Cincinnati, Ohio (January 28, 2014) – Vertx is proud to announce a partnership with Dakota Meyer to develop a co-branded line of apparel in support of For Those Who Gave All. FTWGA is the brainchild of Meyer, the first living Marine in three decades to receive the Medal of Honor. The overarching goal of FTWGA is to create awareness for our nation’s military and first responders while providing support to various related non-profit charitable organizations.

Vertx Managing Director Joe Yorio commented: “We are both honored and humbled to be collaborating with US Marine veteran and Medal Of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer to launch a cobranded line of apparel endorsing For Those Who Gave All. This was a perfect fit for Vertx being that many of our employees are veterans and our parent company, Fechheimer, has been making uniforms for the last 170+ years. Our sister brand Flying Cross currently produces several uniforms for our military, as well as numerous government agencies and many law enforcement departments.” Yorio goes on to add, “A major contributing factor to this overall partnership was that Dakota was not just attaching his name to this endeavor; he wanted to be heavily involved in product development, marketing and sales and is committed to the success of FTWGA. This hands-on style is very complimentary with our vision for the expansion of the Vertx brand and the engagement of our Pro Staff to contribute to our overall product design and wear testing. We look forward to a successful partnership and are privileged to be an advocate for the For Those Who Gave All brand.”

The first launch of products is available for pre-order with future collaborative designs in the works. Five new t-shirt designs can be found at www.ftwga.com and http://www.wearvertx.com/FTWGA-For-Those-Who-Gave-All.aspx.

Skeletonized Magazine Retention from S&S Precision

Friday, January 31st, 2014

Back in late September we gave you a sneak peek at S&S Precision’s Skeletonized Magazine Retention. This video gives you some additional info as well as depicts quite well how it wears and works. If you want some history on the system, head back over to the original article.

Yeah, back then we messed with you a little bit by not disclosing any info on the DUST-E which protects the top of the magazine when it’s inserted into the SMR. It’s not that we didn’t want to tell you, but rather, S&S precision wasn’t quite ready to show everything. They had a valid concern that it would be knocked off before SHOT Show. I’ve got to say, it’s pretty entertaining watching guys go on and on, putting something down that they haven’t seen in person. It’s even funnier when you tell them that it’s covered and they just can’t stop talking about it (Ok, I’ll admit it, it did hit a point where it was annoying). So, the rest of the story is that they had the upside down open top magazine issue covered all along and the answer is the DUST-E which is an insert for the SMR. In fact, I photographed the very items seen in this video for the sneak peek article. They literally left the next day for the photo shoot.

All-in-all it’s a cool system and can be used without a PlateFrame with their new Rhodesian Rig, MOLLE adapters and Belt Adapters. Before you ask, that’s ODG camo.

FirstSpear Friday Focus – Offering 50% Discount on MOLLE Products

Friday, January 31st, 2014

While supplies last, FirstSpear is offering all existing MOLLE style platforms and pockets at a 50% off discount on their website. Supplies are limited and backorders will not be accepted. This is an AWESOME DEAL for anyone who must use MOLLE equipment, primarily uses his or her equipment on the range or is looking for a low cost backup system. MOLLE remains popular and still the most widely used system on the market due to cost and availability.

MOLLE is still viable, it’s just that something better has come along. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the MOLLE products that FirstSpear is closing out. These are not factory seconds. Everything is first quality and dealers have already had an opportunity to pick these up so they aren’t undermining anyone with this sale. FirstSpear related that they would produce MOLLE pouches if they received a contract, but that they would no longer stock the items for commercial sale. So you’d better act now. Instead, they’ve got a couple of alternatives that have been around awhile but have really started to take off. Now, they want to move forward exclusively with their 6/9™ attachment system which is completely backwards compatible with PALS/MOLLE and an even better set up, the 6/12™ Pocket Attachment System.

“We started FirstSpear to continuously push innovation and move the industry forward in support of the Warfighter, Tactical Law Enforcement Officer, and First Responder. Now that the technologies we pioneered a few years ago have proven themselves on the battlefield and in the street, discontinuing the old stuff is a no-brainer,” said Scott Carver, President & CEO of FirstSpear.

So you may be asking yourself, “What’s better than MOLLE?” As the first company to take traditional MOLLE/PALS style platforms and pockets out of their stocking line, FirstSpear looks toward the future and their 6/12™ Pocket Attachment System. You’ve seen numerous new laser cut load carrying products out there but FirstSpear’s is different. They’ve gone beyond offering a laser cut version of MOLLE.

I spoke with Ronnie Fowlkes, Director of Business Development at FirstSpear about the move and this is what he had to say, “Customers have been rapidly adopting our new technologies so quickly, that it doesn’t make sense to keep offering an outdated system. The 6/9™ Modular Pocket Technology is lighter weight than the old stuff and is backwards compatible with MOLLE-style platforms, and the 6/12 technology offers the best in weight reduction, profile management, security, and flexibility.”

As you’re going to see, the 6/12™ Pocket Attachment System is unlike anything else out there.

FirstSpear™ 6/12™ Pocket Attachment System

• Up to 50% reduction in weight & significantly less bulk
• Backward compatible with standard MOLLE/PALS
• Forward compatible with FirstSpear’s™ ultra-lightweight 6/12™ pockets
• Enhanced cable management

6-12 tech

Weight! There are several philosophies on dealing with weight as it applies to load carriage. Some development has occurred in lightweight materials, but these tend to sacrifice performance. Other developments have taken place in “load transfer” by shifting weight around, but they reduce flexibility while increasing heat retention, bulk and even overall load. FirstSpear™ has taken a different approach. We listened to the Users and decided to eliminate the weight and sacrifice nothing. In the design assessment of current pouch attachment systems, FirstSpear™ recognized that the major weight parasite on both the platforms and the attaching pockets is the yards of bulk nylon, snaps and polymer stiffener. The FirstSpear™ 6/12™ technology eliminates these components and achieves a 20%-40% reduction in weight per standard Assaulter configuration when compared to current pocket attachment systems. The FirstSpear™ team invested more than a year developing and testing the FirstSpear™ 6/12™ Pocket Attachment System. It utilizes state of the art fabric technologies to deliver a completely modular system, compatible with standard MOLLE pockets. From adhesive heat-set backing to laser cut precision attachment points, the 6/12™ system is a completely new, design-engineered solution that meets the need for modular, lightweight load-carriage platforms and pockets. Additionally, 6/12™ provides greater fabric flexibility on unarmored platforms and tighter mounting of pockets to create a cleaner silhouette that aides in enhanced signature management and mobility. The 6/12™ platform face is completely slick when pockets are removed and allows for easy management of communications cables and wires.

Don’t transfer the weight, get rid of it.

FirstSpear™ 6/12™ Modular Pocket Technology

6-12 backer

Modular Pockets Compatible with FirstSpear™ 6/12™ Platforms – Weight reduction is not just a buzz phrase at FirstSpear™ – it is an ethos demonstrated by the 6/12™ pocket line. Utilizing these pockets on FirstSpear™ 6/12™ platforms allows the wearer to achieve a weight reduction of over 40% without sacrificing performance. By removing the heavy nylon webbing, polymer reinforcement and metal snaps of the previous system, not only is weight reduced, but the overall profile of the pocket on the platform is significantly condensed as well, allowing improved signature management in all visual, IR and thermal spectrums.

FirstSpear™ 6/9™ Modular Pocket Technology

6-9 attachment

Developed specifically for those Users who have not yet adopted FirstSpear™ 6/12™ platforms, the 6/9™ Modular Pocket Technology is not only completely backward compatible with legacy MOLLE/PALS style load carriage or armor carrier platforms, but also offers significant weight reduction over traditional MOLLE/PALS pockets. Due to the flexible nature of the attachment straps and tighter tolerances when compared to traditional MOLLE/PALS, 6/9™ pockets actually mount closer to the body and conform tighter to the platform. Already adopted by Professional Users within the joint US Special Operations Forces community, this system provides many advantages over the traditional MOLLE/PALS system and can further help facilitate transition into the 6/12™ Modular Pocket Technology where the ultimate in weight savings, signature management and tight fit can be achieved.
