SOFIC 2015 – Polaris Defense DAGOR

Wednesday, May 20th, 2015

This is the first public showing at SOFIC for the DAGOR vehicle from Polaris Defense. Last year, it was still under wraps amd interested parties were shuttled to a nearby warehouse to take a peek.

DAGOR is Polaris Defense’s first vehicle built specifically for military use from the ground up. While Polaris products are well known in the military space, they have all been adaptations of commercially available items. From the beginning, Polaris had a nine man vehicle in mind and set the design to fit well into a specific gap in the SOF Family of Vehicles.

In fact, if they were to create a new vehicle today to comply with the Ultra Lightweight Combat Vehicle requirement, Jed Leonard Manager Advanced Mobility Platforms at Polaris Defense told me that it would look like DAGOR.

I asked Leonard about the vehicle’s strength and he related that DAGOR is optimized to carry military payloads in extreme terrain, and is a great balance of Transportability, Usability and Mobility. That means you can get it where it needs to be and reliably drive it while you’re there.

DAGOR is built with commercially available components such as the drive train. This commonality means spares are available worldwide at lower pricing and makes them easier to work on. Additionally, Polaris Defense is working with Rousch for vehicle performance enhancement.

In order to answer the specifics of the recent Ultra Light Combat Vehicle program, Polaris added a roll over protection system to the rear compartment of vehicle as well as other requirement specific items.

They’ve related that DAGORs are currently in service with SOF customers and that they’re getting great feedback. All certification testing is complete including airdrop, sling load and internal transport. They’ve also completed government durability testing.

The vehicle curb weight is less than 4,500lbs to maximize tactical aircraft operational range and has a payload capacity of 3,250lbs. The width of DAGOR facilitates rapid loading into the CH-47 Chinook platform without modification and the weight allows it to be sling loaded under the UH-60 Black Hawk. The vehicle has completed certification testing for CH-47 Chinook Internal Air Transport (IAT), air drop and UH-60 Black Hawk Sling Load.

While I won’t get into specifics, I can say that I’m very surprised at how cost competitive the DAGOR is when compared to other vehicles in the same weight class. It’s available commercially off-the-shelf, right now. Also, the use of COTS parts makes maintenance sound much less daunting than many other vehicles which should result in lower life cycle costs.

Huron Tactical – 32l Assaulter Sustainment Pack with Direct Action Assault Pack

Wednesday, May 20th, 2015

This is the second installment in a three-part exclusive sneak peek at Huron Tactical’s new pack and clothing line. Today, we’ll cover the 32 liter Assaulter Sustainment Pack with Direct Action Assault Pack. The pack itself is a hybrid top/panel loader design with an internal frame. The internal frame of the pack is constructed of aluminum and carbon fiber. Huron’s 32l Assaulters Sustainment Pack is low profile and uses both 500D Cordura as well their hybrid PV material in key areas for incredible strength and abrasion resistance.

32 liter Assaulter Sustainment Pack

The 32 Liter model is the smallest of Huron Tactical’s new line of packs. Unlike the external frame of other Huron packs, it also incorporates an internal frame and this frame is set up for wear with or without armor. It comes standard with a Large Cap which is removable and other models are also available.

• Cubic Liters: 32 (Main Body, Large Cap, Nalgene Bottle Pockets)
• Dim: 19”H x 11.25”W x 7.75”D

As the yoke and waist belt are adjustable for height using a PALS-style attachment, it’s imperative you take the time to set it up properly for comfort.

The ergonomic, adjustable waist belt has integrated, removable lumbar support and is very comfortable. It is easily tightened by pulling forward on the straps.

One of the features I really like is the top opening. It is a rolltop closure that sits independently below the Cap. It is Velcro closed and secured via SR buckles meaning you can control your load and keep your gear a little drier.

Additional Features:

•Carry Handle
•Pals webbing for MOLLE attachment
•Four integrated expandable side pockets for a Nalgene bottle or canteen
•Hard sew zippers allow the user to change the overall storage capacity of the pack with interchangeable front flaps.
•Front loading via heavy duty #10 zippers on the right & left side of the pack
•Attachment points allow the user to change the overall storage capacity of the pack with interchangeable caps
•Side compression straps allow the user to the overall capacity of the pack when areas are not in use
•Antimicrobial/FR treated padded spacer mesh is used on the internal portions of the vest for comfort.
•Yoke load levelers adjust the pack vertically and horizontally which assists in reducing fatigue

DAAP

You’ll also notice a large pouch of sorts on the back of the 32l ASP. That’s actually a Direct Action Assault Pack that uses zips and snaps to attach to the main bag, just like it does in the PICO family of armor vests from TYR Tactical. This allows for a lot of flexibility as it can be carried to an ORP attached to the pack and then transitioned to the vest for actions on the objective. It includes shoulder straps so it can also be worn stand alone, but increases the load capacity and organization options when used in conjunction with a larger pack.

The DAAP features 1” daisy chain gear loops and 2 rows, 2 columns PALS for attachment capabilities. DAAP incorporates the same integrity as the Huron Assaulters Sustainment Rucksack System and features a reinforced gusset around the bottom of the pack, internal mesh storage pocket, internal hydration pocket with top hydration port and a removable beavertail for storing helmet or transitional garments.

The full line will be released 15 June, 2015 from www.TYRtactical.com.

Carryology – First Look :: AustriAlpin COBRA Sport Buckle

Wednesday, May 20th, 2015

AstriAlpin

Carryology recently published a first look article on AustriAlpin’s new COBRA Sport Buckle. Made of 7075 aluminum and brass, the Sport Buckle is designed as a lower cost option for use with clothing, sports equipment, backpacks, etc., when the higher-cost, load bearing standard COBRA buckle would be overkill.

3rd Annual Duskin And Stephens Beef And Beer Benefit

Tuesday, May 19th, 2015

Beef and Beer Benifit

The 3rd Annual Duskin and Stephens Beef and Beer Benefit is this THURSDAY, May 21st at the Pinehurst Fair Barn. If you are in the Fort Bragg area, there is no better way to kick off your Memorial Day weekend than with this event honoring two fallen Green Berets, CW2 Mike and Duskin and SFC Riley Stephens. This is an excellent event run by two active duty Special Forces NCOs. The past events have helped support Army SOF soldiers and their families. This is a family friendly event which, in addition to raising money, also helps connect SOF service members with the local community.

For more information visit:

duskinandstephens.com

Earlier in the year former teammates and friends of Mike Duskin also hosted a 3 Gun Competition. The match honored four former Special Forces Soldiers who were also competitive shooters and raised money for the Task Force Dagger Foundation. The first place shooter won a Salient Arms Tier 1 Glock 17 which he in turn donated to this year’s Duskin and Stephens Beef and Beer Benefit Silent Auction. Next year the planners of the 3 Gun intend to move the match to May in order to be held closer to the Beef and Beer Benefit.

SOFIC 2015 – Team Wendy Scalable Helmet Armor Appliqué

Tuesday, May 19th, 2015

You may notice a tin crack along the crest of this Team Wendy EXFIL Ballistic shell. That’s because it consists of fore and aft ballistic appliqués.

Team Wendy hasn’t named the appliqué yet but they are keeping an eye on SOF ballistic requirements with this development.
