BioLite FirePit – Now On Kickstarter

Friday, September 22nd, 2017

BioLite has a very successful history of using Kickstarter to launch products. Their latest effort is the FirePit. It’s a smokeless wood-burning device that cooks your meals and gives you a front-row seat to everything going on inside your fire.

There are 51 airjets which inject the fire with oxygen along key locations thanks to the fan located inside the USB-rechargeable orange power pack. This promotes uniform temperature and gas mixing to burn the wood as effeciently as possible in order to reduce smoke.

#1: Get an efficient burn with way less smoke than a conventional fire pit

#2: Enjoy the feeling of a 360-degree floating fire with the FirePit’s X-Ray Mesh

#3: Burn charcoal or wood embers for a hibachi-style grilling experience

Bonus: Kickstarter backers receive a free Solar Carry Cover ($60 value).

USSOCOM Small Business Roundtable

Friday, September 22nd, 2017

The United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) is hosting a Small Business (SB) Roundtable in Tampa, FL on 17 October 2017 from 2:00pm-4:00pm, with a no host social from 4:00pm-5:00pm. Government participants will be the USSOCOM Acquisition Executive, Director of Procurement, and Director of the Office of Small Business Programs.

SB Roundtables are intended to allow small businesses to discuss barriers to doing business with USSOCOM, provide input as to what USSOCOM is doing well, and provide suggestions for ways to make doing business with USSOCOM easier. These roundtables are not meant to be an opportunity for firms to present their capabilities to USSOCOM, or to receive a forecast of upcoming requirements.

USSOCOM would like to have participation from all socio-economic categories and a variety of industries. Space is limited to 25 individuals; therefore, participation is restricted to one participant per small business.

The criteria considered when selecting attendees (in no particular order and not listed in order of importance):

1. Socioeconomic status (they would like representation from each socioeconomic category (SB, SDB, WOSB, HUBZone, VOSB, and SDVOSB);
2. Products and/or services provided (they lean more towards firms that provide what the command buys, but want a variety of industries represented);
3. Experience with USSOCOM (they would like a mix of experienced and inexperienced firms);
4. The last time your firm has attended a SB Roundtable (they want to afford all firms an opportunity to attend a roundtable);
5. When your request to attend was received; and
6. Where your firm is located (they would like a mix of local and non-local firms).

UPDATED – CSASS Update

Friday, September 22nd, 2017

Naturally, if word gets out that the Interim Combat Service Rifle effort has stopped midstream, folks are going to wonder about other 7.62mm programs, especially CSASS.

Despite a contract award in early 2016 to H&K for a G28 variant, the US Army has yet to field any M110A1 Compact Semi Auto Sniper Systems. So far, the program has no funding. It’s not dead; it just doesn’t have money to buy anything.

However, a directed requirement for 6069 G28 rifles, which are essentially M110A1s minus the optic, is still rumored to be moving forward, albeit rather slowly. These rifles will be fitted with a different optic and used in the Squad Designated Marksman role. While the Army will not have a widespread capacity to bring 7.62 hate, the DMR guns and existing M110s, built by Knight’s Armament Co, offer a limited capability.

However, CSASS is still alive and well with the US Navy and US Air Force, who are reportedly still on track to field several thousand of the rifle system.

UPDATE
Within an hour of this post being published, The Army Contracting Command published an award on FedBizOpps entitled, “Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System Engineering Change Proposal”.

The U.S. Army Contracting Command – New Jersey (ACC-NJ), on behalf of the Project Manager Soldier Weapons (PM-SW), awarded a modification to incorporate Engineering Change Proposals to the Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System.

If I were a betting man, that ECP turns the CSASS into a DMR by eliminating the Optic and Suppressor as well as lengthening the Barrel, which results aggregately in lowering the price and producing the desired variant of the G28 specified in the Directed Requirement. If it includes a full-auto function, ICSR could still happen as an ECPed CSASS and offer the Army the 7.62 H&K G28, it wants.

We will update you as we learn the details of this ECP.

MDM 17 – Geissele Automatics Super Modular Rail MK16

Thursday, September 21st, 2017

The Upper Reciever in this photo is equipped with the M-Lok standard, Super Modular Rail MK16 Rail, from Geissele Automatics (but in Desert Dirt Color rather than Black), and Super Charging Handle as well as a Daniel Defense Barrel and Gas Block and finished off with a SureFire WarComp. US Army Special Operations Command, as well as others, are said to be looking at this configuration. Despite being referred to by some as “URG-I” (Upper Receiver Group Improved) these are parts, intended to replace existing components, giving their M4A1s an update. The Super Modular Mk16 is not available commercially.

For those of you familiar with the Geissele Gas Pedal, that’s one on the lower. It’s ambidextrous and offers a 45 Deg throw from Safe to Semi. The real magic is when you depress the spring-loaded Gas Pedal, offering momentary Full Auto performance, as long as it is depressed. Let go, and the weapon reverts to Semi Auto mode. It takes a couple of magazines to overcome muscle memory associated with the full 90 Deg throws of a standard Selector, but it’s a very fast transition from Semi to Full Auto. There’s no more fumbling with the Selector, just push the Gas Pedal and Rock and Roll. This is an upgrade DoD should consider immediately.
