Television Icon David Blanton of Realtree featured on Federal Ammunition’s “It’s Federal Season” Podcast

Thursday, March 19th, 2020

ANOKA, Minnesota – March 19, 2020 – For more than three decades, Realtree has been a pioneer in developing and licensing camouflage patterns and creating hunting content.  From its first pattern launch of real life, three dimensional patterns, Realtree took the concealment apparel market to new heights.  In the early stages of the company’s growth, Bill Jordan, Realtree founder, realized he needed to promote the brand himself to be successful.  One of the architects of those successful strategies, David Blanton, is on the “It’s Federal Season” podcast hotseat for this entertaining episode.

Episode No. 5 – The Influence of Realtree

“David Blanton has a great story to tell about the infancy of Realtree and the success that has followed since he and founder Bill Jordan met back in 1991,” says Jason Vanderbrink, President of Federal Ammunition.  The iconic television programming and marketing they developed vaulted Realtree’s brand image and camouflage patterns to be a household name today.  “Realtree shaped the way networks presented entertaining and aspirational hunting content on television,” says Jason Nash, Senior Marketing Director at Federal.  “Their videotape and DVD series are still popular, and they continue evolving with media consumption patterns with the launch of its own digital platform, of which Federal is a proud sponsor” says Nash.  Blanton adds some great perspective on what’s new with the brand, hottest patterns, and tells some personal stories that fit right in with “Funniest Home Videos.”

Federal Sponsored Shooters Earn Spots to Represent the US in Tokyo

Sunday, March 15th, 2020

ANOKA, Minnesota – March 10, 2020 – Federal Ammunition sponsored shooters Kayle Browning and Vincent Hancock will chase Olympic glory in the shotgun sports at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.  Kayle Browning will be one of the women trap shooters to represent the U.S. and Vincent Hancock will make up half of the men’s skeet team.

Browning recently won her division at the two-stage U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Shotgun which wrapped up on Monday March 2 in Tucson, Arizona. “I started competing in sporting clays when I was 8 years old. My dad, Tommy Browning, was a competitive shooter. He got me into it,” said Kayle. “It’s been a crazy ride!”

A 2012 Olympic alternate, Browning did all she could to finally secure her Olympic debut in 2020. She secured an Olympic quota for the U.S., then led after the first stage of trials and finally sealed the deal with a great finish. The 27-year-old from Wooster, Arkansas, is coming off top-13 finishes in the last two world championships.

“We are excited for Kayle,” said Federal Marketing Director Jason Nash. “Her skills have already racked up a long resume of accomplishments, including two Pan American medals, a 2018 World Cup bronze medal, 2017 World Cup silver medal, 2016 National Championships silver medal and much more. We know she will do an excellent job representing the U.S. this summer in Tokyo.”

Vincent Hancock will chase his third Olympic title in Tokyo after winning golds in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012.  The four-time World Champion won the qualifying skeet trials on Sunday, March 8 in Tucson, Arizona. “It’s a big relief,” said Hancock. “I’ve put a lot of effort into being here and being at the top of my game at the right time.”

“Federal couldn’t be prouder of these competitors,” said Nash.  “Vincent has been a wonderful example of dedication to hard work, determination, and a desire to reach the top of the podium again and we are anxious to follow him through the rest of his journey.”

Steinel Ammunition Revives a Classic Military Round, the 6.5 x 52mm Carcano

Tuesday, March 10th, 2020

Unlike current factory loaded 6.5 Carcano ammunition, Steinel’s load respects the original concept, thus providing outstanding accuracy as in its original format in 1891.

Twinsburg, Ohio (February 2020) – Steinel Ammunition, a manufacturer of premium vintage military, hunting, and self-defense ammunition, tackles another milsurp round, bringing back its original accuracy performance: the 6.5 x 52mm Carcano.

The 6.5x52mm Carcano cartridge has been around since 1891, and was only phased out of military service in the 1970s. Carcano rifles were strong actions, and most used gain-twist rifling to extend barrel life and improve accuracy. Heavy for the caliber projectiles, it retained useful energy levels despite the round nose form. The original lead core bullets had poor terminal performance, so later designs filled the bullet nose with less dense aluminum to promote tumbling on impact. Nearly 3 million Carcano rifles were built, and many of them sold in the US as surplus.

Unfortunately, until recently the ammunition supply did not keep up with demand. Corrosive World War II vintage or older surplus ammunition is unavailable, and what can be found should not be shot due to the uncertainties surrounding the storage conditions. A relatively affordable PPU load is available but offers very poor accuracy due to the severely undersized bullets used in all observed samples, resulting in unstabilized projectiles right from the muzzle.

Fortunately, an excellent target load is now available from Steinel Ammunition. The new cartridges use soft point expanding bullets that provide excellent terminal effect and accuracy while promoting reliable feeding. Loaded to 1,770 fps (from 17.5in barrels), this load offers a significantly lighter recoil than the original, while retaining good terminal performance at distances reasonable with iron sights. At short range, the bullet expands to about 0.516-inch with 39-inch penetration of synthetic gel, sufficient for a double-shoulder shot on a deer. This ammunition is non-corrosive and made to much higher quality and more consistent specifications than either military surplus or other commercial loadings.

Steinel Ammunition’s new vintage military round, the 6.5×52 Carcano is available online for $31.99 a 20-rd. box.

Steinel Ammunition Releases its First Premium 9mm Defensive Load

Sunday, March 8th, 2020

Steinel Ammunition Co., known for their hard to source, unique MILSurp loads and premium hunting and target ammo, have designed a 9mm 124gr. Subcompact Carry SCHP round for EDC.

Twinsburg, Ohio (March 2020) – Steinel Ammunition, a premium manufacturer of self-defense, hunting, and target ammunition, has launched its first-of-its-kind premium defensive ammo for the 9mm with the 9mm 124gr. Subcompact Carry Solid Copper Hollow Point (SCHP).

“This 9mm Subcompact Carry round is our first mainstream round we’ve added to our product line-up,” Andy Steinel, president of Steinel Ammunition, explained. “Although we have come to be known for our premium MILSurp rounds, we figured, even though we all love to go to the range and shoot these amazing classic firearms, we also carry defensive firearms every day. So why shouldn’t we have the same quality ammunition in our EDC as we do in our fine military collectibles?”

The Steinel 9mm Subcompact Carry load is perfectly suitable for any 9mm, regardless of barrel length, but its performance is optimized for the shorter, subcompact and compact-sized pistols. Taking the standard “cup and core” jacketed hollow point typically used in 9mm rounds for decades, Steinel Ammunition added modern CNC and EDM technology to produce their premium SCHP bullet.

Steinel Ammunition’s 9mm Subcompact Carry bullets combine premium components such as Maker Solid Copper Hollow Point bullets, new Starline nickel-plated casings, Hodgdon powder, and CCI’s primers. The bullets expand to a diameter of 0.706” when fired from a 3” barrel at 960 FPS. Fired from a 4.7” barrel, the bullet expanded to a diameter of .857” with 1,050 FPS velocity.

Steinel Ammunition’s new 9mm 124 gr. Subcompact Carry SCHP round is available online for $19.99 for a box of 20 rounds.

Federal Expands Lineup of 6.5 Creedmoor Loads and Adds Options in 6.5 PRC

Wednesday, February 5th, 2020

ANOKA, Minnesota – February 3, 2020 – Federal has expanded its available loads in 6.5 to cover a range of shooting disciplines. The newest additions for 2020 include the 6.5 Creedmoor Swift Scirocco II, Terminal Ascent and the MeatEater Series Trophy Copper. Terminal Ascent is also available in 6.5 PRC. In addition, Federal has expanded its trusted Federal Premium Gold Medal rifle ammunition line with a new 6.5 PRC load.

Born as a competition round, the 6.5 Creedmoor has quickly become one of the most popular hunting cartridges on the market. No surprise, either, since its flat trajectory, high ballistic coefficients and blistering velocities give it a deadly combination of long-range accuracy and lethal hunting firepower—all from a short-action platform with relatively mild recoil.

“Fans of the 6.5 Creedmoor have several hard-hitting new options at their disposal, thanks to a flurry of new introductions, plus a new 6.5 PRC loading,” said Federal Centerfire Rifle Ammunition Product Director Mike Holm. “In 2020, we have raised the bar in performance and versatility with high-powered loads perfect for a variety of hunting or competition shooting with new Berger, MeatEater, Swift, and Terminal Ascent options. We are especially excited for customers to experience these four newest additions to our long list of 6.5 cartridges.”

6.5 PRC Gold Medal Berger – 140-grain, 2,925 FPS: The fast-flat-shooting cartridge has already proven itself in Precision Rifle Series competition and has earned the respect of elite long-range shooters. The new round is loaded with the extremely accurate Berger Hybrid bullet, and paired with Gold Medal match primers, Federal brass and specially formulated propellant.

6.5 PRC and 6.5 Creedmoor Terminal Ascent – 130-grain, 3,000 and 2,800 FPS: Bonded construction penetrates deep on close targets, while the patented Slipstream polymer tip initiates expansion at velocities 200 fps lower than comparable designs. The bullet’s long, sleek profile offers an extremely high ballistic coefficient, and its AccuChannel groove technology improves accuracy and minimizes drag. Now available in a full selection of long-range hunting cartridges.

6.5 Creedmoor Swift Scirocco II – 130-grain, 2,800 FPS: The bullet’s streamlined design and high ballistic coefficient produce flat trajectories, while retaining more velocity and energy downrange. Aided by its proprietary polymer tip, the Scirocco II expands at minimal velocities yet offers high weight retention at close range thanks to its bonded copper jacket.

6.5 Creedmoor Trophy Copper MeatEater – 120-grain, 2,875 FPS: The polymer-tipped Trophy Copper bullet retains 99 percent of its weight for the deepest penetration possible in an expanding bullet. Plus, the tipped bullet cavity is optimized for reliable expansion across a broad spectrum of velocities. As a bonus, its grooved shank boosts accuracy in a wide range of firearms, while the nickel-plated case prevents corrosion and aids in faster, easier extraction. It also features a boat-tail design to increase ballistic coefficient for higher downrange velocities, more energy on impact and less bullet drop. This is the official ammunition of MeatEater, with new packaging that highlights this partnership.

These new products were announced at the 2020 SHOT Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, January 21-24. New Terminal Ascent ship at the end of January 2020. Swift Scirocco II, MeatEater Trophy Copper and 6.5 PRC Gold Medal Berger are scheduled to ship in the Spring of 2020.
