Hornady to supply 300 PRC Ammunition to US DoD

Wednesday, December 12th, 2018

Grand Island, NE — Hornady has been awarded a contract to provide its 300 PRC ammunition to the United States Department of Defense.

The 300 Precision Rifle Cartridge (PRC), released by Hornady earlier this year, was tested and selected by the Department of Defense for its extended long range sniper program following a rigorous evaluation process that saw the new 300 PRC outperform the 300 Norma Mag as well as several other cartridges in testing past 2,000 yards.

“We’re thrilled to be able to do our part to support our military members by providing a superior cartridge that will enhance their capabilities on the battlefield,” said Scott Javins, Hornady Law Enforcement & Military Product Manager. “Over a 10-year development process, we packed all of our knowledge and experience into designing the 300 PRC as a cartridge that will not only win matches and bring home that trophy elk, but also meet the needs of the best-of-the-best within the Department of Defense. This contract confirms that we’ve met or exceeded their requirements for a new small arms ammunition solution for extended range engagements.”

Starting with the 375 Ruger cartridge case, Hornady built the 300 PRC from the ground up to launch long, heavy-for-caliber, aerodynamic bullets over long distances. Designed for maximum efficiency with common, temperature-stable, magnum-speed rifle powders, the 300 PRC delivers the highest levels of accuracy and aerodynamic performance.

The 300 PRC is commercially available in the Hornady® Match™ line with 225 gr. ELD bullets and the Precision Hunter® line with 212 gr. ELD-X bullets. Both options feature the Heat Shield® tip, which resists drag inducing bullet tip deformation from aerodynamic heating.

The U.S. Department of Defense has also awarded a contract to Barrett Firearms Manufacturing to provide an undisclosed number of MRAD rifle systems chambered in the Hornady® 300 PRC caliber.

AEWE – Demonstrating General Dynamics’ Reduced Range Ammunition

Wednesday, November 28th, 2018

A Co / 1-29 Infantry (EXFOR) Soldiers conducted familiarization and qualification using the General Dynamics Reduced Range Ammunition. The 5.56mm and 7.62mm Reduced Range Training Ammunition from General Dynamics OTS are designed to reduce the maximum flight distance while maintaining a ballistic match with regular 5.56mm M855 and 7.62mm M80 cartridges.

The projectiles are solid brass while the cartridge case, primer and propellant are the same as those used in the conventional Army. The projectile is modified and the specifically designed fins gradually add drag, reduce the maximum range and prematurely force the projectile out of the sky. The cartridges are fired and require no modifications from current M240B and M249 SAW weapons which is transparent to Soldiers and small tactical units. This is operationally ideal for shorter SDZ live fire ranges for Soldier training and familiarization.

US Army Announces Industry Days for Next Generation Squad Weapons

Saturday, October 20th, 2018

Just two weeks ago the US Army issued a draft Prototype Opportunity Notice for the Next Generation Squad Weapons, their number one Lethality priority which consists of the Next Generation Squad Weapon-Rifle (NGSW-R) and the Next Generation Squad Weapon-Automatic Rifle (NGSW-AR). The NGSW-R is the planned replacement for the M4/M4A1 Carbine and the NGSW-AR is the planned replacement for the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) in the Automatic Rifleman Role in Brigade Combat Teams (BCT). Both are planned to be chambered in 6.8mm, firing a completely new cartridge which does not currently exist. This program is more an ammunition program than a weapon program.

In a notice published earlier today on www.fbo.gov, the Army announced that it will hold industry days for the upcoming Next Generation Squad Weapons Prototype Opportunity Notice. They will be Wednesday to Friday, November 14 through 16, 2018. This pace shows how dedicated the Army is to the plan.

The NGSW program overview will be provided on November 14, 2018 beginning at 9:00 am and will be completed by 12:00 pm.

The one-on-one sessions will start November 14, 2018 at 1:00pm and continue through November 16, 2018 as necessary. One-on-one sessions will be limited to 45 minutes with a 15 minute break between sessions. Vendors may have partners join their one-on- one sessions.

Th Industry Days will be open to foreign companies but they must follow particular instructions.

Be sure to visit www.fbo.gov for full details.

AUSA 18 – SIG SAUER Unveils Belt-Fed Machine Gun, Carbine and Hybrid Ammunition – Next Generation Squad Weapon Candidates

Monday, October 8th, 2018

SIG SAUER has unveiled their new Belt-Fed machine gun. Originally developed to fire the 338 Norma Mag cartridge, a 7.62 NATO version was quickly developed and now they are prepared to accommodate the 6.8mm projectile and associated ballistic requirements of the US Army’s Next Generation Squad Automatic Rifle Other Transaction Authority (OTA) currently underway.

img_7064.jpg

They also showed their newly developed Hybrid Ammo. It’s a three-piece metallic design which offers 20% reduction in overall cartridge weight as well as increased velocity over conventionally produced ammunition. Even better, it works in existing weapon systems and can still be produced on current ammunition lines in any arsenal.

img_7059.jpg

They have already developed multiple cartridges with this technology.

And if that’s not enough, SIG also revealed their MCX-MR (MR-Medium Range) which was initially developed for the Army’s Compact Semi Auto Sniper System. They’ve shortened it up for the upcoming Next Generation Squad Automatic Weapon Prototype Opportunity. Yes, that’s Keymod on the handguard, but it’s a prototype.
